I refuse to believe whatever he had for her at that time was just sympathy. He felt more than sympathy.

He didn't like meerab crying. That's why he went and held her hand when she was having breakdown when her adopted parents left her despite the conflict between them.

He got most affected when she cried infront of her adopted parents door.

That's why he said abb rono math. And post marriage he admitted he can't see her cry.

He always saw meerab as a firecracker since his childhood. First time he saw her having breakdown when her adopted parents left her. He would rather prefer meerab fight with him whole day than seeing her cry even for 5 minutes.

There was real heartbreak on his face in that scene, he didn't want to see her pleading and begging. He didn't offer his hand like before to help her up off the ground, get yourself up dust yourself off and let's go home.

In the prayer scene when he is staring at her and she stares back, he is taken aback as he looks away stunned he has just realized something, for me this is the origin of his romantic feelings for her. Meerab is crying as she pleads with god to not abandon her, Murtasim is in pain too as he looks up at the sky, not sure her prayer reached god but it reached him. This is when their love story starts, it was her plea to not be abandoned combined with him realizing his feelings and accepting her prayers as she becomes his responsibility.
