Nargis didn't get into the pantheon of great acting till Mother India, and that was much later in her career.
You might just get that one or two roles that defines your whole career in the Indian Film Industry and you better nail them if you want to be called a great actress, I think Priyanka has done that but not DP, even in the same movie Priyanka knocked her out of the boxing ring with a single punch. Beside we don't sell acting we sell stardom, not quality but box office numbers. How many of us are talking about DP acting or contribution in Pathan it is just about box office numbers and SRK is back. But look at Tom Cruise Maverick, yes box office is great, but the real story is Tom Cruise fearlessness commitment dedication to his craft.
Indian film industry is not hindi film industry. Kamal Hassan, mammotty, mohanlal, danush, vikram, fahad fasil, vijay sethupathi, Prithviraj etc are also leading men in commercial Indian cinema and they all have acting chops as good as any Hollywood actors if not better. Kamal Hassan is not just one of the best actors in India, he is one of the best in the world.
Merly Streep also was never Hollywood's IT girl because she isn't exactly commercial Hollywood female lead material. Scarlet Johansson, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, gal Gadot etc are the top commercially viable actresses in Hollywood and they all belong to the category of beautiful women with decent acting skills. Deepika is any day a better actress than scarlet Johansson and gal Gadot. Merly Streep is an acting legend in Hollywood just like Tabu is for Hindi cinema. Nobody questions their acting skills but no one is gonna cast them in roles that require a scarlet Johansson or Deepika Padukone. Do you think acting skills are the only requirement to play wonder woman? If so gal Gadot would have never gotten the role. She became wonder woman because the role required someone that looks physically powerful and charismatic and conventionally very beautiful and has ana amazing screen presence. As I said somewhere before if an actor fill the physical discription of a character half the job is done. Florence Pugh is a good actress and more critically acclaimed than gal Gadot but that doesn't mean she should be cast as wonder woman. Most of the times in commerical movies being an excellent actor is not the only requirement. That's why Deepika Padukone is required for a movie like pathaan. She elevates the style quotient and glamour quotient and star value of the movie more than any other current top Hindi actresses. If her job can be done by Jacqueline Fernandez or disha patani then the makers won't spend 5 times the money on Deepika. Pathaan is not a movie that requires great acting contribution from any of the actors in it. Nobody is talking about srk's acting in it either but srk the man himself in it is what matters.
