Stumps on Day 2 and it's been another day full of thrills and spills. India slipped from 46 for 0 to 66 for 4 and then from 125 for 4 to 139 for 7, they were then hauled out of trouble by the Axar- Ashwin pair, the partnership adding 114 runs for the 8th wicket to restore parity. As such India's 262 was just 1 run shy of Australia's 263. They then struck early by dismissing Usman Khawaja, but Travis Head, who was promoted to the top of the order, made a fluent unbeaten 39, he was well supported by an intent-filled innings from Labuschagne and the visitors will be the happier side going into the end of play, having stretched their overall lead to 62 runs. Ashwin and Jadeja didn't get the same help from the pitch in that last hour and Rohit did look deflated at times. Signs of the pitch getting better? Or were the Indians average with the ball?
Axar Patel: Obviously it feels good to score runs, but the important thing was coming back from a pressure situation. I think because I was able to defend off the middle, my confidence rose and then I was attacking balls that were in my slot. I was asked in WI if I’m a batting or bowling all-rounder. My answer is simple - if I score runs I’m a batting all-rounder, if I get wickets I’m a bowling all-rounder. I got used to the pace of the wicket today, and the ball wasn’t coming on too quickly so I got time. I was trying to attack the left-arm spinner because that’s my match-up. We’d like to reduce them to as low a target as possible, I think the morning session tomorrow will be important. We need to bowl well and pick a couple of wickets.
Nathan Lyon talking to the host broadcaster after the day's play: They are good batters and they could bat in the top 6 in most other sides, here they are batting at 8 and 9, they are not bowlers who can bat but proper batters [on Ashwin and Axar]. I think I sort of deviated from my strengths at Nagpur, my strength is getting it to spin over the top and here I just went back to my basics. The pace was the same throughout the series. Virat is a great batter and in my opinion it was out, I'm pretty sure Virat thinks otherwise. Does help when we have burnt a few reviews and one has to applaud the umpires for such decisions. Hopefully the batters come out and be positive, stick to our methods. It's gonna set up for what should be a good Test match. A few more would be nice [when asked whether 250 is a good target to defend in the last innings].
Once again, a fascinating day's play in Delhi. Australia surged ahead at the start, with Nathan Lyon picking up four wickets in the morning session. Then Virat Kohli put on a mini masterclass and a trend started to develop. Batting became easier as the ball got older... but just when you thought you knew everything, Australia struck back, and looked for all money that they'd take the lead. Once more, this Test pulled out a sucker punch as Axar Patel added to a growing list of lower-order fightbacks from India. Australia's lead was cut down to just one run, but now it's 62, thanks to the much-maligned Travis Head serving a reminder of his singularly gifted quality in Test cricket: scoring runs at scary pace. He's 39 off 40 on a turner and as a result Australia are going at 5.08 an over. That is a proper *ahem* Head start to a one-innings shootout. It's all perfectly set up now, so join us tomorrow to see which way this game goes.
