Part 5

Toshu was pouting.

He didn't like sleeping alone in the bed. He had gotten used to having kinjal around. He wanted to play with Pari, with her cute little fingers and happy giggles.

Alas, kinjal was being stubborn. True to her word, she spent last night with kavya inside her new room. They didn't even come out to eat, asking the new team of servants to bring them dinner inside the room.

Leela wasn't pleased with their antics either. They had dinner before everyone else and that too inside the bedroom. It didn't suit the Shah bahu. Kinjals attitude towards toshu wasn't helping either. She needed to talk to kinjal, even scold her if she didn't listen, but first she must feed the honey ghutti to her granddaughter, so that she will grow up sweet spoken just like her great grandmother.

Now imagine her surprise when Kinjal not only refused to feed her daughter the ghutti, but also placed her opinion about Leela's nuskhe in rather..... Strong words.

" I told you Baa, she is only 4 months old. She should be only having breast milk Or formula. She can't digest honey. It's harmful to her. Last time she was so sick that you couldn't take care of her and you didn't even bother to take her to a doctor. I will not allow this. I am her mother, and only I will decide what's best for her. She will not have this Ghutti and that's final. "

Leela didn't like this side of kinjal even a little bit. She thought Anupama had managed to tame her and turned her into an ideal bahu. But in that moment, she was reminded of that Naagin, Rakhi Dave.

She went back to the kitchen, where Toshu was telling the head cook about his new business which will surely be successful this time.. Let's say... The cook wasn't amused.

"Hey Baa, what's up? "

"Nothing Toshu, I wanted to feed this ghutti to Pari, but kinju baby refused. "

"Itni si baat. Why fear when your talented grandson is here. I will ask kinjal to send pari with me to play, tab aap usko ghutti khila dena. Simple."

Leela grinned, Toshu was really talented.

Toshu called kinjal since she forbid him from entering her room and begged for a daddy daughter day with pari. Kinjal sighed, and agreed on the condition that he will take care of her feedings and nappy changes,.... And no ghutti Or other feed will be given to Pari. She needed to reach her office anyways, some urgent paperwork that could not be delayed was waiting for her. She could trust toshu with his own daughter right?........ Right?

12 hours later the shah family, Kinjal and Rakhi were at a children's hospital waiting for Pari's pathology reports.

Kinjal's face was devoid of emotions, but her strong grip on Rakhi's hand told the story of her inner turnoil. She had failed Pari... again.

Toshu tried to come near kinjal, to apologize to her... To beg for her forgiveness.. But one glare from Rakhi sent him packing. Only person whom they spoke with was Kavya, who was away for a photo shoot whole day and came to hospital directly from there.

" I am sorry Rakhi. If I was there today, I would have stopped Baa from feeding honey to Pari. "

Rakhi inhaled deeply. Anupama's behavior was infecting others now, why was kavya apologizing when she wasn't at fault there.

" Don't fret kavya, only people who are responsible for pari's condition is Baa and Paritosh. " Rakhi replied in a calm tone. But it was calm before the storm.

Pari's pediatrician called them inside his cabin. He took one look at kinjal and knew she couldn't be at fault here. He looked at the family once again and started speaking, " Pari is in stable condition. We have started IV fluids to treat her dehydration. Her vomiting and diarrhea is under control now. As for her blood tests, it's all good. She didn't suffer from organ damage. We will keep her here for 48 hours for monitoring,then we can discharge her. "

Kinjal closed her eyes in relief. Her heart shattered when she reached back home a few hours later and found Pari throwing up and crying. The Shahs were running around like headless chickens, while Baa was trying some home remedy to treat Pari, they were rubbing hot hing on Pari's belly, she remembered now.

Kinjal has let out a strangled cry fit for a battleground. She scooped up her daughter, collected her old medical records and diaper bag and left for the hospital. She noticed some ghutti stains on Pari's clothes, and inwardly cursed the Shah clan before calling Rakhi. She didn't bother calling Anupama, she just wanted her mother.

She came back to present when she heard the doctor speak again. "I want you to answer honestly though. I already told you last time that babies should not eat honey, then why it was fed to her again?"

Toshu looked away, ashamed while Leela spoke up.

" Kya doctor sahab. This has been our age old tradition. We feed honey to kids so they can speek sweetly. I fed it to all my kids when they were young. "

"Mrs Shah, you should be thankful that your granddaughter will recover without any lasting damage. Honey can cause a condition called Botulism in babies, it leads to a painful death. Just because something worked for you doesn't mean it will for everyone. Your granddaughter already had adverse reaction to honey once. "

Rakhi decided to lead the conversation, before Leela could start arguing with the doctor and create another tamasha." Thank you doctor, me and kinjal will ensure Pari's safety from now on."

They left the cabin soon, Rakhi ,Kavya and Kinjal headed to Pari's room. The Shahs protested, they wanted to see Pari, but kinjals words stopped them in their tracks.. "You have done enough damage. Please leave before I get you removed by the security. "

The Shahs went back home, chalking up Kinjal's curt behavior to stress.

Rakhi watched her daughter.it was a beautiful and heartbreaking sight.Kinjal had fell asleep on the cot with pari, that little angel holding on to her mothers finger, hooked up To wires and tubes.

She and kavya sipped their black coffees, sitting on the couch near the cot.

" You know Rakhi, I wanted to have a baby with Vanraj. " Kavya said, filling the silence.

Rakhi was speechless... Marrying him was one thing, but kids! Didn't kavya see what his kids turned out like?

Kavya understood the look in Rakhis eyes, and she continued, " I am glad I didn't." She didn't elaborate further,but her sentiments were clear. "Vanraj sings lullabies to Pari, but didn't even know the name of her doctor. " Echoed in her mind.

" Kinjal said that you guys had a slumber party, did you have fun? "

Kavya chuckled, " Yes. We even gave pari a little spa massage with her baby cream. She was giggling whole time."

Kavya sighed, " I just needed sanctuary for the night, and your daughter was generous enough to give me one. You raised a good one Rakhi. "

" She is good, I just wish she stopped becoming Anupama 2.0." Rakhi said worriedly.

" Trust her strength Rakhi." Kavya held rakhis hand in her own. " Kinjal was never like anupama.... And after today... She will prove that she is the daughter of Rakhi Dave. You will see it. "

Rakhi hoped that kavya was right.

The Shahs were restless. Pari spent 2 days in the hospital, but Kinjal didn't allow them to visit. When Toshu tried to enter the room forcibly, she called security and threw him out of the hospital. The cold look in her eyes sent shivers down his spine.

Vanraj, Bapuji and Pakhi weren't spared either, having to rely on a few updates provided by Kavya. Samar was allowed one supervised visit for 2 hours. When he came back, he refused to talk to anybody and went straight into his room. He was greatly disturbed watching Pari like that, and knowing that Leela and Toshu were directly responsible, he was just shattered.

Bapuji wad consoling everyone, " Dekho, kinjal abhi naraj hai, hona bhi chahiye. Akhir bacchi bimar hai uski. Use ghar ane do. Hum sab milkar use samjhayenge. Uska dil bahut bada hai, vo jarur maaf kar degi. " After all she was living with toshu even after he cheated on her. This was also forgivable, bapuji was sure of it.

Vanraj was sceptical, " Bapuji, apne uski ankho me nahi dekha. Jitna gussa uske man me hai, vo hume itni jaldi maaf nahi karegi. 6 pm came and went, but there was no sign of kinjal and pari. Kinjals phone was switched off and Rakhi wasn't answering. Toshu and Vanraj went to the hospital, where they learned that they had left the hospital already. The receptionist gave them a note left by Kinjal.

" We will be staying with mom from now. Tomorrow my lawyer will call you. Don't even dare to follow me there. "

Vanraj was scared now. This was the beginning of the storm.

Instead of calling however, the lawyer visited Toshu at the house.

"Mr. Paritosh Shah, my client Mrs. Kinjal feels that you are not suitable to be around her daughter unsupervised. Your history of adultery is also worrisome. You are also financially unstable and currently have no income. My client has decided to live separately from you for now. You will get some supervised visits with your daughter, but you are not allowed to be alone with her. "

The family was now surprised, it seems Toshu did make some connections at those parties, but for wrong reasons.

Epilogue.

5 years later, kinjal sat in her home office working on her laptop. In front of her now a grown up pari sat in a high chair, finishing her drawing. They loved to have study dates together.

Rakhi called them down for dinner. Kinjal took pari to wash her hands first, then they went down stairs.

Pari was a good kid. She ate all her veggies and told her grandma about her day at the playschool. Rakhi smiled fondly. She loved being the favorite grandma.

Speaking of grandma, Anupama did visit them after they brought Pari home from hospital. First she berated them for not telling her about Paris health, and then she gave a 5 page bhaashan about elders, respect and forgiveness. Kinjal listened patiently and then told Anupama , " Respect is earned mummy. You worked yourself to exhaustion for them, just to earn some respect from them, and what was the result? I stayed with toshu so Pari will grow with a father, and he proved to be unsuitable for the title. You have a new family with Anuj sir and choti. They give you love and respect freely and unconditionally, why are you still so hung up on the Shahs. " Anupama didn't have an answer, so she left.

Soon after, kinjal filed a petition for legal seperation and divorce. Now, indian court actually hates divorces, so they had to be seperated for an year before the divorce. But Pari's custody was easier, Samar testified in court about the honey incident, but also told them how 6 adults couldn't take care of the baby and needed to shift to kapadiya resident. He wanted the best for Pari after all.

Now the Shahs could only visit pari twice a week under supervision of Rakhi and her team.Leela was not allowed to feed Pari. Toshu who hemmed and hawwed before, got busy with his next affair and stopped visiting all together.

Kinjal focused on her daughter and career. She lived with Rakhi in her childhood home, where they now created happy memories.

Rakhi was still a shark of the business world, but mellowed out at home. Pari had that effect on her.

Kinjal was content with her life now. And to think it started with her now favorite beverage, black coffee without sugar.
