Nasaruddin shah had acted in so many commercial hits like Chamatkar,Tridev,Vishwatma,Mohara,Sarafarosh etc.bt sad part is he got less appreciation in those rather than in his so called art films and when a commercial film is a hit,lot of factors play imp role rather than just one actor like mainly songs, dances, glamour etc ,so an average heroine like Divya bharati IMO,became a successful and top actress with less talent ,same doesnt happen with villians or those who had an earlier image of art films except Manoj Vajapyee on recent times, off course now eqations have change
Bt IMO, Nasaruddin shah was never an art film actor although he got award for those films bt he was always remained the main choice for directora and producers over Om puri in bollywood.
Masoom was a pure commercial film with intense emotions which was beautifully written and directed by Shekhar kapoor.it was never an art or parallel cinema.
Infact much later in 2000,jab pyar kisi se hota hai starring Salman and Twinkle was its average comedy remake😆
Naseeruddin Shah was not an art film actor is like saying Sachin Tendulkar was not a cricket batsman, ofcourse he is not the Sachin oof art films that would be Om Puri or Smita Patil.
Naseer was made by art films, if art films were not there Naseer would have being a big zero. In bollywod, audience would have thrown him out like they did with Harman Baweja or like many other actors. That is why many people disliked the fact Naseeruddin Shah dissed the very movement that made him.
Barring a couple solo lead films, his bollywood career as a hero never took off, he always rode on somebody else's coattails for BO success, This fact is not even up for debate.
Masoom is a wonderful film but is not a commercial bollywood film, just like Katha is not a commercial bollywood film though it is a fantastic film.
And Om Puri , well as far as acting is concerned Naseeruddin Shah was no match to him. Whenever they were pitted against each other , Om Puri got the better of Naseer by quite a few miles. Naseeruddin Shah himself has admitted Om Puri was a far better actor .
With the kind of looks Om Puri had it is a miracle he even had a career in Bollywood.
