KJO is a very rich brat, he is very articulate and what he is best at is managing stars and their egos.

He is a great MC, however he is not that business savvy or smart or even a very good creative person. He talked about SOTY on how it was successful but did not make money for him which happened a decade ago but not about Brahmastra which is on a similar level.

What he is very strong with is people management, he definitely has a great team for him to be successful. Like he said most of his films recover from digital, tv and music than the theatrical release.

As opposed to event films which failed:

Shamshera

Lal Singh Chadda

Prithviraj

Karan Johar is an idiot.

Anyway, he just gave me a reason to root for Luv Ranjan's film and the 2 crappy Karthik movies coming out. I want those to rub KJo's nose in the dirt. He doesn't know how to make movies. Those who actually can are winning.

Luv Ranjan, known horrific abuser knows how to make movies (that treat all women as trash)? You wouldn't believe the stories I've heard from a spot dada. I would rather support Anurag Kashyap or smaller time film makers. Also one of those crappy Kartik movies is a spectacle event type larger than life film, the kind he says will be a hit.

Prithivaj got a lot of money off OTT rights so sadly it made more than most 2022 movies. Only Shamshera and LSC were outright horrific for event films. (And of course disaster incoming Adipurush)

Audience doesn't come for all event films. Audience primarily only comes for big budget tent poles and franchise/sequels/reboots post pandemic. Low budget films and prestige dramas have shifted to streaming. Karan obviously doesn't realise that every the tell tent poles need to be entertaining, but that's a Karan problem.

I agree re: small filmmakers. But I'd like to see Luv Ranjan movie successful to make a larger point.

By event movie, KJo means stars everywhere , VFx, big budget. He's made it clear. I don't think Shehzada is that?

KJo himself is separating OTT from theater. He's saying the non event movies are better off going to theaters.

I'm just point out except for Brahmastra and RRR, every event movie failed.

Brahmhastra's budget was so big and it took 4 years to be made (From 2018-'22)... it's not possible for him to recover money from satellite/OTT/Music rights. Ranbir is not that big a star for a big recovery from those sources. Most of Ranbir's latest hit movies bombed on TV and OTT as well. So Kjo can't say he recovered the money from those sources. So he avoided mentioning that Bramhastra was a "perceptional hit".

If Kjo had spent 100cr in 2018 he needs 4X15cr = 60 as profit.

If the 2nd 100cr in 2019, he needs 3X15cr = 45cr as profit

If the 3rd 100cr in 2020, he need 2X15cr = 30cr as profit

If the 4th 100cr in 2021, he needs 1X15cr =15cr as profit

If the last 30cr for promotion in 2022, he needs 1X4.5cr=4.5cr as profit

So he needs to make 430+155cr = 585cr net from all the sources. Subtracting the recovery from OTT-Satellite-Music rights, which is 150cr max., he'd need a theatrical share of 435cr... which means the movie needed to make almost 900cr Worldwide gross to be called a success.

He might admit in 10 years that Bramhastra was his "perception wala hit", but not now.

Karan Johar has become too big for his shoes, imo. I've started since long to dislike his behaviour...he seems to look at himself as a film mogul (or at least as someone 'who knows-it-all').

Genre doesn't really determine the event nature of a film. A film could be a love story and still be an event film. But slice of life dramas just generally don't have that kind of appeal to drag people into theaters. Even in Hollywood, Rom-Coms are dead on arrival in theatres.

Problem with Karan is he doesn't really believe anything he says. He just repeats popular talking points to appear smart.

This.

Whatever he reads on the Internet. And one day he'd be in big trouble because of this.
