Just some further reading on Vanishing Twin Syndrome (VTS).

It is estimated that 1 in 8 twins end up with VTS, where one twin absorbs the other. But the data is based on evidence where a second heartbeat disappeared or a semi-absorbed fetus is found in the womb.

But some people theorize that this is more common and the twin is absorbed completely, sometimes even before the ultrasound detects a heartbeat. Any of us could have absorbed a twin in the womb.

VTS has been a common horror trope in films like The Unborn, Malignant, and Let Her Out.

Yes, I also know about this phenomenon. Yet telling this to the mother at that very moment was horribly inconsiderate.

Nature isn't biased and it could never be a conscious act by one of the twins to absorb the other (or to make him/her unlivable). Often, the different strength also shows in living twins. It's okay to inform parents (so they don't feel any culpability or even reject one of them or are overcaring for the weaker one) but one has to choose the right moment.

This is a tricky situation. Medical professionals have an ethical and legal obligation, to tell the truth. If there is a miscarriage or stillbirth, they are obligated to disclose how and why promptly. They have to be transparent no matter what.

They absolutely cannot pass a moral judgment on patients or situations to disclose/hide information based on that moral judgment.

Yes, it is fascinating how VTS has an everlasting impact on the lives of many characters, esp. Qala, in the movie.

Would the mother have minded as much if the boy had survived and the girl was subsumed in the womb? Makes you think, doesn't it?

No, she wouldn't. That's why I wrote about the mindset concerning the preference given to a certain gender.
