i agree that casteism is a huge issue in telugu states (more andhra actually) and intertwined heavily with politics but i think the newer generation has only so much casteism as conditioned into them (as the rest of us)

i doubt somebody like prabhas or mahesh are really inciting their fan clubs to fight on caste basis

do you patronise and keep these clubs going, yes because their start and survival is dependent on them

the problem is these fans worship these heros based on caste and then carry that bile to their worship

here i would like to point to TN film industry, where dravidian and non dravidian is the issue and caste is a huge component of it, the films and stars also have loaded politics associated with it

And I would add/correct the following, looking at some other posts. The nepotism angle has been presented neatly, so nothing to add to it also.

1. Allu Arjun's debut Gangotri (03), was a blockbuster. Its collections were bigger than Parbhas' Raghavendra, Pawan Kalyan's Johnny, and Mahesh Babu's Nijam released in the same summer. AA crossed Gangotri's numbers with Deshamuduru (07).

2. Allu Arjun's journey is 100% similar to Alia or Ranbir at a higher level privilege-wise concerning the projects. All his films barring Naa Peru Surya, were with blockbuster directors or with directors who delivered a blockbuster previously. Its called Padding** among Telugu fans. This includes even a different attempt (considering industry standards) like Vedam that came after Gamyam.

3. Naa Peru Suriya is the ONLY disaster in Allu Arjun's career that was made with a debut director (the second one after Arya). Varudu is the ONLY flop. Happy, Badrinath, Iddarammayilatho are Bel-avg affairs. His success rate is staggering, the best compared to the rest of the Telugu stars. So, box office wise closer to Alia Bhatt than Ranbir. In either case (2&3) no comparison with Hrithik who was an overnight star and tier 1 hero from the debut.

4. The reason why there was/is no noise regarding the privilege is because everyone else floats on the same boat, and Allu Arjun is far lesser a star compared to them. Mahesh Babu actually gets called out for the same as an Alia or Ranbir. He is branded as a padding star**. Personally, I don't think it's wrong working in combo films; Chiranjeevi does that, Rajini does that, and so do many other Superstars, but then the combos have to set the box office on fire like those stars do. It didn't happen with Mahesh Babu, which is why the flak. His contemporaries Pawan Kalyan and Jr NTR (not age-wise) put records with far lesser combos. And Allu Arjun was nowhere near Mahesh Babu until recently.

5. There is no denying the hard work of Allu Arjun. But he wasn't a tier-one star, to begin with, despite a blockbuster debut. Despite his remarkable change in looks, he was still criticised very much as an actor and also for his looks. The perception changed only in the last few years. Again, it is all due to his hard work.

6. Allu Arjun is yet to give an Opening Week Record. His "First" opening week record in a territory (Nizam) came recently with Pushpa. Prabhas had them all with Baahubali. Now, AA is most likely to have them all with Pushpa 2. That would be in 2023, after his debut in 2003.

7. Given this track record, many feel Allu Arjun has been shoved down the throat. A padding star who wouldn't be where he is without the combos "curated" for him by his father. But, the "Mega" brand was too big to have an effect on him. His overwhelming hard work and sustained success have also helped him. He was like Alia Bhatt but at a lower level compared to the big stars. But, tables have turned now, and to show him as a "Superstar", a tier one star from the start, the new narrative of the Allu family/legacy is brought out.

8. The future looks perfect for Allu Arjun "now". He could be the dominating star from Pushpa -2 given his extraordinary PR/marketing team. Prabhas and Jr NTR are his only competition, especially the latter.

9. Charan will always be there, but he doesn't seem to have that passion to be number one. Prabhas too has same issue, but he is relatively on his own for a long time with no legacy issues, so it eases out pressure on him to live up to certain expectations. It helps in selecting subjects and, thereby, the box office.

Obviously not a fan of Allu Arjun 😉, but I am curious to see his star trajectory for the rest of the decade. He could be (or not) number one. He is ambitious and has all the machinery at his disposal. The Khans are old, and younger ones lack the "Masala Swag/Screen Presence". Right "now" he is the "Sixth" biggest star in TFI, though.

Absolutely agree about Arjun being the top 4th or 5th behind Mahesh, NTR, Prabhas and of course Pawan. Just in 2019 when Gully Boy came, I remember him gushing about the movie and how BW makes such wonderful movies and how he would like to be a part of such movies. Things changed dramatically over the last couple of years with the Pandemic coinciding with AVP’s super success and then his master plan to release Pushpa a week earlier than planned that too all over India.

His Pushpa success is definitely his, but to think that his dad had no role to play in it is wrong. Allu Arvind made sure that the theaters won’t release any other movie for the next three weeks therefore making it tough for 83 to find enough screens. He did the same during his upcoming days also hogging all the screens and making it difficult for the then upcoming and more popular stars like Uday etc.

It’s pretty disgusting how they monopolize in the Telugu film industry not letting the outsiders have any chance to become the top tier Heros . And it’s laughable for people like me who know exactly how things play out behind the scenes, when folks praise the Telugu industry and say the nepotism there is not like how it is in BW when the truth is it’s much worser than the BW.

Ranveer is really starting to turn me off with all these buying of awards and ripping off other actors.

Malayalam cinema caught my attention after Drishyam 1 became hit and I was floored by The Great Indian Kitchen movie which portrayed reality.

I discovered Allu Arjun dancing skills recently after seeing videos here and I noticed my husband see Pushpa in Amazon Prime. I must say.. he’s so flexible and smooth in his dance.. I’ll say he’s equivalent to Hrithik Roshan and Prabhudeva as far as dancing is concerned.

I too stopped watching (except select) in 90s and 2000s for same reason, used to watch hindi

now its the other way round, though there are still problematic movies but quality and variety is much better

i watch all south langauges and what i enjoy is definetly that the middle and lower middle class movies look and feel real

also there are some solid directors across all languages whose films one can watch (rrr's in kannada)

even in telugu, you have a some nice low budget, real movies like cinema bandi, c/o kancherapalem, mathu vadalara, middle class melodies, pelli choopulu, jaathi ratnalu, agent sai srinivas, ee nagaraeniki emaindhi, yevade subramnyam etc

jr ntr is a great dancer and trained in kuchipudi, he has the joy while dancing, he may not be speedy or smooth like allu arjun but he has the ease and expressions, also trained dancer's hand gestures will always be precise and clear, the angle of their body etc, even in naatu naatu once can see it. also because they are trained in bhava, their expressions will synchronize with lyrics

prabhu deva is a great dancer but any thing choreographed by him and performed by a sai pallavi, allu or hrithik willl be more higher because they can probably replicate him almost fully but more importantly have expressions suitable to the lyrics when they dance which prabhu deva doesnt because he is no actor

ram charan is a step lower, the other good ones are ram, akhil

i think this the last generation of stardom, no way kids who are young today watching k drama and tik toks even in the smallest towns are going to hero worship mahesh's or allu's kid some 15 yrs later

the way it is changing rapidly, it will pretty much be like hw, will they get access yes, maybe some curiosity from the audience, but stardom or some fan following no

same goes for even srk's kids, and further down, in fact it will die faster in hindi, as current stars do not have the same pull as the khans

this is because it is not stars fans who have to wtach them but the the next gen who will not be invested

they will follow on insta and watch their reels because it is free but wont pay ticket and come to the theater just for them

Which is why I try to keep any discussion on TFI to a bare minimum, there are just too many dynamics right from distribution to fan groups and castes, if you know you know, otherwise it is difficult to gauge all of it.

Forget all of that, it really takes a lot for the heroines to get the deserved respect, otherwise also because of the language barrier they are treated as dumb chicks.
