Earlier in the day, the SCG was treated to the Glenn Phillips show, as the stylish Kiwi batter scored a superb hundred after a rare failure from Devon Conway, Finn Allen and Kane Williamson. Phillips scored 104 out of New Zealand's 167 runs, as Sri Lanka were made to pay for some ordinary fielding and dropped catches after getting NZ to 15/3 at one stage. Quality spin seems to be the kryptonite for Conway and Finn Allen, although Sri Lanka couldn't capitalize well enough. Maybe there is a lesson there for future teams that will play New Zealand.

JOYDEEPSINGHGIL: "I'm sure if sl didn't drop Phillips catch nz score would've below 135 and sl would've chased that amount of runs could've rain biter match than completely one sided today wasn't sl day they misfielded missed run out chances too and dropped the crucial catch of Phillips which eventually costed them this match." 'Ifs' and 'ands' etc., but had SL approached that chase smarter it might not have mattered.

Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka Captain: First ten overs, we bowled really well. Credit to Glenn Phillips who played an outstanding knock but while fielding we dropped a few chances. Then 160 was maybe too much for us with the quality of Southee and Trent Boult. There is a way to chase big totals, but we lost early wickets and then lost them at regular intervals. We need to come out with a positive intent in the next couple of games.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand Captain: Interesting match, the wicket was different as the surface had some tennis ball bounce so slower balls, cutters were very effective. (On Glenn Phillips) Incredible, any hundred is amazing but the way he worked hard and put pressure on the opposition after our poor start. We were being aggressive but keeping it simple in the powerplay, the length ball was the most difficult to hit, so we stuck to that and those cutters. The boys executed the plans really well.

A one-sided, fairly drab affair for a chance to nullify all the last over finishes we've been having (when it hasn't rained). That's all for now, join us tomorrow for the triple-header which starts off with Bangladesh playing Zimbabwe in Brisbane.

Another thumping win for New Zealand, as they further augment their NRR while climbing back to the top of the table. This game ended as a contest within the powerplay, as some poor application from the Sri Lankan batters coupled with some smart bowling from the experienced duo of Southee and Boult helped turn the tide. Sri Lanka lost their top three within two overs, and were 5/3 at one stage.

Things didn't improve too much after as well, as Asalanka fell cheaply a couple of overs later. Rajapaksa entertained with some big shots, and he may have threatened the game had he stayed longer, but he threw it away trying to chip Lockie Ferguson over mid-off. The spinners Sodhi and Santner chipped in with a couple of wicket apiece, as Sri Lanka suffered another thumping defeat.

This loss all but ends their journey, with their net run rate taking another nose dive.
