In elementary school, I learned a poem that was written as a letter to the French President by a deserter of his army. Part of this soldier's experience was that while he was a prisoner, his wife was stolen from him, and with that he lost his soul and his precious memories.

I am sharing the poem in the original French, which is how I learned it, but you can easily find several English translations on the internet.

Le Déserteur par Boris Vian (1954)

Monsieur le Président

Je vous fais une lettre
Que vous lirez peut-être
Si vous avez le temps
Je viens de recevoir
Mes papiers militaires
Pour partir à la guerre
Avant mercredi soir

Monsieur le Président
Je ne veux pas la faire
Je ne suis pas sur terre
Pour tuer des pauvres gens
C’est pas pour vous fâcher
Il faut que je vous dise
Ma décision est prise
Je m’en vais déserter

Depuis que je suis né
J’ai vu mourir mon père
J’ai vu partir mes frères
Et pleurer mes enfants
Ma mère a tant souffert
Qu’elle est dedans sa tombe

Et se moque des bombes
Et se moque des vers

Quand j’étais prisonnier
On m’a volé ma femme
On m’a volé mon âme
Et tout mon cher passé
Demain de bon matin
Je fermerai ma porte
Au nez des années mortes
J’irai sur les chemins

Je mendierai ma vie
Sur les routes de France
De Bretagne en Provence
Et je dirai aux gens
Refusez d’obéir
Refusez de la faire
N’allez pas à la guerre
Refusez de partir

S’il faut donner son sang
Allez donner le vôtre
Vous êtes bon apôtre
Monsieur le Président
Si vous me poursuivez
Prévenez vos gendarmes
Que je n’aurai pas d’armes
Et qu’ils pourront tirer.

Many years after I learned this poem, a university announced a Student Veterans Panel. They expected a huge turnout of students interested in enlisting, but they got an audience of one person: me. I had no questions, so everyone else in the room got to talk about whatever they wanted to share with me. There were six male student veterans on the panel, one of whom was accompanied by a dog because his service had left him legally blind.

I listened to their reasons for enlisting (ranging from "I wanted to do something unselfish" to "I was tired of school" to "I wanted to kill someone after September 11, 2001"). They told me how their discipline as soldiers made schoolwork easier, and how it made them want to kill their younger classmates who expected answers without studying, spent their time partying, and thought they knew everything from the news. After years of in-person oral communication, these men found it difficult to seek help when resources were presented in writing. When a student veteran had a panic attack and ran out of class, no one understood what was happening to him.

These men didn't want special treatment because they were veterans; they just wanted to be understood.

Respect for soldiers is hollow and incomplete unless we acknowledge the full spectrum of their experience: not just bravery and medals and a hero's welcome home, but ... going into battle without protective gear until their families manage to pay for it out of pocket ... digestive ailments and lifelong injuries ... religious extremism in the armed forces ... being cheated out of health insurance for their families ... shooting captive enemies because they're too much trouble alive ... sexual harassment and homophobia/transphobia in the ranks ... peer pressure to exploit captives/prostitutes ... post-traumatic stress disorder ... loss of intimacy with spouses ... knowing that they weren't there for their children ... inability to reintegrate into society, depression, and self-harm.

Fictional portrayals of soldiers and their families could bring much-needed visibility to a vulnerable population ... if someone could write for them responsibly!

i agree. There are so many nonsense movies they release which does not carry any meaning or spend lots of money on remake. Rather than that they should try to bring more movies about noble ppl their experience how they felt while they were doing that. Flow of thoughts that they had when they were about to fight for the nation. Currently i only seen few movies which actually shows soldiers life. Even if they show either they over hype it or just try to add a love story to it. I agree soldiers also has love story but focus should be more on their achievements than the love story as everyone has love story but everyone will not sacrifice for the nation.

There was one show called as left right left which started on a good note of cadets getting trained under a training camp and they ended up making a love story. Post which i lost interest. Now shows like naagin which shows naagin is better than army personnel than her husband who is in army is running. Was there any necessity for ekta to show him as army personnel if she can not do justice to his character because in the end naagin will be glorified. People should never include noble profession if they can not do justice to it in their movies. If they do they deserve the respect for putting their life at stake for us.

Is this the show where a woman dresses her FWB with her husband's uniform so they could perform the devil's tango? She apparently tore his uniform? Is that this show? If it is, that is some weird kink. 🤔 Like, kink shaming is bad nowadays but some kinks are just downright bad, ngl. Not only do you cheat but to fulfill a disgusting fantasy, disrespecting a profession like the army is just indecent. I won't say this is polluting the mind cuz let's be real, the people doesn't need this show to get their mind polluted. Alt Balaji is just another paid version of PHub. If this ain't it, then it's another one. I think I am just disturbed of them making these weird fetishes.

I have mixed feelings about this.

Being from a family of army officers, I feel ekta shouldn't demean/sexualize uniform of noble professions like Army, Police etc. Its kind of derogatory.

But that being said, I don't agree with the supreme court saying that her OTT content pollutes mind of youngsters. We are living in 21st century, where youngsters know about love making long before marriage, infact in school/college itself. If anything, sex education should be made mandatory curriculum in college, so that youngsters can understand the risks of having multiple partners & also understand how to practice safe sex.

Her OTT platform is shit except few

But before that she and others need to called on the shit they show on ITV.

OTT may not be that easily available but ITV is

ITV is not showing p*rn but it is even more shitty things and more easily available. The abuse and all the ridiculous things are shown and glorified are horrible.

As I always say

TRP system needs to be changed then only I feel we can see better content and few thousands shouldn't have control over what crores of Indians and others watch.

Again

OTT too need restrictions, web show / online ke naam per kuch bhi nahi dikha sakte hain.

She has money and resources so she goes to SC every now and then to waste their time in name of defending herself.

It isn't like she is dudh ki dhuli and isn't doing anything wrong.

Don't like EK or her serials, but the Supreme Court's opinion is such a turdwash of a joke.

Not familiar with the case itself, but it seems like someone somewhere is butthurt about a lot of things .. and that's just a waste of court resources unless it's done with malicious intent.

"Every time, you travel to this court....we don't appreciate this. We will put a cost on you for filing such a petition. Mr Rohatgi please convey this to your client. Just because you can afford and hire the services of good lawyers....this court is not for those who have voices."

Even if I do agree that the rich have access to better resources and the judicial system is heavily favored towards the rich, they have a right to be represented in court. You can't just be like "this court isn't for you because you have money."

Coming to the part of polluting minds - prohibition does not work. You can ban p0rn, but it isn't going to stop sexual desires. It's better to adapt and conform in a healthy way. EK serials may be complete trash, but that's up to the viewers to decide.

While I do crave better television, let's face it - TV is nothing more than a giant distraction that strays us from our true life goals. It's entertainment yes, but it's also a huge waste of time (in the grander scheme of things).

Ekta Kapoor is polluting minds and inspiring other polluted content creators since 2000. Hum Paanch is her only show which is likeable. ITV which has a mass reach could have been used for betterment of the society but thanks to the regressive TV shows, it is only feeding junk content to people's mind.

Yes. Thank you for providing the details. While I don't think anyone should be arrested for bad taste or hurt feelings, I understand why the scene was seriously offensive to soldiers, their wives, and many other people.

This was not a sensitive portrayal of a soldier's wife's loneliness. The scene's purpose was to titillate viewers with a "stolen valour" fetish, the idea that anyone can pretend to be a soldier by wearing his uniform, with the decorations that he earned by years of sacrifice, and cheat him out of a sexual reward.

Army wife Shikha Shinde has eloquently expressed how insulting the scene was, and why its producers should feel shame even after deleting the scene, in a petition at change.org (ektarkapoor-altbalaji-apologise-publicly-for-humiliating-army-wives-insulting-the-army-uniform).

I found a YouTube clip of the scene, which I am sharing in a separate post marked Mature, so that everyone can either watch it, and decide what response it deserves, or deny the producer the attention that she craves.

I don’t think this statement is regarding the sexual content, I think the court meant the concept it was showing, by showing that Army officers’ wives having extra marital relationship or sex, is the point here. It is directly discouraging those who wants to serve the country or to join the forces. What message she is giving? That the girls are like this only? I understand the point that sex is a primal instinct and all that and I am not talking about morality and all but a relationship is beyond the sexual needs and she is just summarising that a marital relationship does mean only one thing and if you are not getting it from your husband then cheat on him. She is promoting cheating and that is what corrupting the young minds.

It is not only the Army officers who makes such a big sacrifice, their families also sacrifice their happiness so why to degrade them just for the trp🤷‍♀️
