Seeing a product advertised as "Phenyl" leaves me wondering what the molecule really is, the way an advertisement for "alpha-hydroxy" or "omega-3" is meaningless unless you do the samasyā-pūrti.

Yes, a benzene ring is very nice! It's aromatic due to the electrons delocalized in a molecular orbital formed by sharing of pi orbitals among carbon atoms in a regular hexagon.
