Laal Singh Chadhha has taken an opening of 11 Crores nett on first day which was a non-holiday or partial holiday in some parts of the country, because of Raksha Bandhan (festival).

What is the biggest reason for this low opening?

Is it because of the clash with Raksha Bandhan (movie)?

While it's true that a clash does effect the box office collections of a film. But Raksha Bandhan took an opening of 8 Crores nett. So even if we add extra 8 Crores to the opening of LSC, which the movie might have collected with no clash.

Then also the opening of LSC would be around 19 Crores only, which is still low opening by Aamir Khan standards. Since his previous films like PK (25 Crores nett) and Dangal (29 Crores nett) have got bigger openings with first day still being non-holiday or partial holiday.

Is it because this movie didn't release on Christmas?

It's also true that since Raja Hindustani, Aamir has not given a Blockbuster which has NOT released on Christmas. Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal, all these films which have broken records at the box office have released on Christmas. He released Thugs of Hindostan on Diwali and it flopped.

But even TOH flopped after getting an opening of 48 Crores nett. Although it released on a holiday like Diwali so it's not a fair comparison. But then films like PK or Dangal released on a non-holiday and not directly on 25th December and still got bigger openings above 20 Crores.

Is it because LSC was more of an OTT film and audience only wants to watch epic larger-than-life action films in theaters?

But then Prithviraj and Shamshera flopped as well, movies which definitely required big screen viewing. On the other hand, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was a Blockbuster at the box office, a movie which could easily be watched on OTT.

Is it because people have no interest in watching LSC since its a remake of Forrest Gump which they've already watched?

People who have watched Forrest Gump would be a small section of the audience, mainly from urban multiplexes, so I don't think this would have a big effect on the box office of LSC.

Did people boycott LSC because Aamir made PK?

PK made fun of Hindu Gods and traditions according to some people. But then why PK was an All Time Blockbuster and the highest grossing film of all time, having lifetime collection of 337 Crores nett, if this movie made people boycott Aamir?

Did people boycott LSC because Aamir made some comment about intolerance in India?

Then why after that comment Dangal came out, and this movie also ended up becoming highest grosser of all time and an All Time Blockbuster grossing 374 Crores nett at the box office? After Dangal, Thugs of Hindostan as well took a bumper opening, even though it flopped later on but that was because it was a crap film.

Did people boycott LSC because it stars nepokids Aamir and Kareena?

Then why Gangubai starring the poster child of nepotism got an opening of 9 Crores nett and lifetime collection of 126 Crores nett? Aamir is definitely bigger star than Alia and has never been called out for being a nepo-kid like Alia.

Did people boycott LSC because it's just a Bollywood film, and they're boycotting anything related to Bollywood?

Then why Sooryavanshi and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 were Hits at the box office and made so much money? Both movies should've flopped at the box office.

Although LSC was/is still supposed to make much more money than Sooryavanshi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Gangubai and even The Kashmir Files. So yeah, it's possible some people boycotted or did not watch all these films in theaters.

Did people boycott LSC because Aamir played a Sikh character in the film but didn't speak up when Sikh farmers were sitting on protest for over a year in Delhi?

Possible, but Sikhs are a minority community. I don't think they could make a big dent on the box office even if they boycotted.

Did people boycott LSC because Kareena made a statement that if people don't like nepokids, then they shouldn't watch our films, which pissed them off?

Again possible, but doesn't seem like a big enough reason.

Did people boycott LSC for all the above reasons and when you add them up, they make a large number of audience not watching the film?

Again possible, but only time will tell on how upcoming Bollywood movies perform, especially of Aamir, Kareena, movies with nepokids and movies with Sikh characters in lead roles.

Did people have no interest in watching LSC because the trailer got a negative response, the biggest reason being Aamir's acting?

Seems to me the biggest reason why it took a bad opening. Even the trailer of Thugs of Hindostan got a mixed response compared to LSC.

Did Aamir lost his stardom and trust factor with the audience because of Thugs of Hindostan?

Again, it could be a big reason but we could only tell with how upcoming films of Aamir perform at the box office.

Aamir made a comback in 2008 also with a South REMAKE, that film broke Records, our 1st 100 cr film, a phenomenon which was still new to conquer.

This time he chose a Subject which had a very niche audience. This was Drama genre, his character wasn't some regular guy, then north indian setup, all things sum up in trailer which itself didn't click with audience.

Give him another film with new concept & popular genre, he can rock big like anything.

1 more thing I would like to add, Salman with Drama genre Bharat gave a 41 Cr opening, he doesn't have that crazy fan following which will rush to theatres just to watch him. He need that pull in his films to attract audience, earlier he did with flying colors, this time he got overconfident on that pull.

Because, like the OG, this was also an elitist type of classist film.

Audience taste  has changed . They want to spend their money only on big spectacles like MCU movies or KGF/RRR.

Aamir and Kareena are not charming enough for people to wanna flock to the theaters just to watch their antics without a refreshing story to hook people.

Secondly, the totally whack trailer where he was still in PK mode, just with a turban around his head this time around, drove off whatever little "enthusiasm" people did have without it ... and I'm pretty sure people looking forward to this movie were already in the minority.

I came across this thread on reddit.

So you're right to some extent. Although, Netflix subscription is quite low in India. But 5.5 Million is still large a number of audience. I still don't think this is the biggest reason LSC performed poorly.
