I get your point, but I would disagree somewhat. I think romance never becomes outdated. Just the form and the packaging changes. I think a good romantic story, if molded according to current sensibilities, would still work wonders at the box-office.
There's a reason why those South Korean romantic dramas work for people. Romance is evergreen!
I didn't mean to say that romance gets outdated.. I am only saying that those 90s romances are outdated now. The ddlj, kkhh, qsqt types. Yeah if BW can write a good romantic story, such that it strikes a chord with the vast majority of audiences, then it could work. But it's really tough to do that. Even romances like Aashiqui 2 or say even a Kabir Singh (though that wasn't really a proper romance) doesn't find unanimous appeal , like those 90s romances did, which is why they became ATBBs. I personally didn't like Aashiqui 2 , only the songs were awesome. Kabir Singh was problematic IMO. Again ADHM was a romance but it was shitty. YJHD probably was an easy breezy romance and can be said to have found that mass appreciation /love.
Talking about Korean dramas, their stories actually are much better written. For most dramas , it's not just the lead pair, but the side characters, second leads, and the whole thing as a package works. But they too have cheesy romances which I personally dislike. Fluffy romance is not my cup of tea now 😂 I mostly like slice of life stories, thrillers, mysteries and so on with romance as a subtext.
