That depends on whether one believes the trade reports. Like I said in my first post, BOI has definitely shown their bias over time.

Lol at Varun for going out on a limb trying to justify JJJ as a hit. Hope this reality check brings him back to earth. Although the movie wasn’t terrible but the way Dharma’s aggressive PR was trying to portray a false narrative and messing with the actual numbers was very off putting. Let the movie speak for itself, if your product is good enough, it’s gonna connect nonetheless. No need to trick the audience into thinking otherwise.

I don’t think they lie about the actual number. For instance if they are claiming that Gangubai made 126cr total I don’t think the actual numbers are 110 or 115. They are reporting the numbers accurately. It’s how they’ll analyze those numbers that’s the issue. Is Gangubai a hit at 126? Is JJJ really an average at 80cr?

Budgets, distribution sales, profits shares between distributors and producers, there’s no specific and uniform answer for how all of these should be calculated and that makes it easier for trade to declare a movie hit per the whim of producers and PR.
