I am from Kerala and i think it was compulsory for teachers to wear a sari during the time i was in high school esp government schools. Now i think younger teachers wear salwar and all. But don't think any wear Western clothes. Even when i entered college most of the female lecturers who are in their late 30s or 40s used to wear saree only. The young ones mostly guest lecturers wear salwar with dupatta. In government offices also most women wear sarees. I guess cotton sarees kind of make women look more formal in a working environment as india cannot enforce western formal wears in indian offices esp government offices. Even the young women in higher positions kind of prefer sarees as it gives a more executive look than salwars.
Don't know how is it in the northern part of India. I as a malayali got a cultural shock when I stayed in Delhi for an year 😆
Thank you that explains a lot and I love saree I just don’t know how to wear it. I am 4th generation Canadian- Indian so my mum is very much like me too. I never saw her wear sarees except maybe few times and dad didn’t care. Our ancestral home for dad is in Gujarat and mumma’s ancestors are from Punjab. But even my grandma never wore a saree. I used to think it is such a beautiful attire but lack of finesse around it made it harder for me to wear it.
I see in Pak dramas they wear white to college so must be compulsory? Or is that school? South India has different rules compared to north India?
