🏏CRICKET: A Bat and A Ball game 🏏

(Tutorial Part- 3)

Link to Previous Part

Topic 7: Cricket Field and Dimensions

•> A cricket field is a large grass field on which the game of cricket is played, presumably circular in shape.

•> No fixes dimensions of cricket field [varies between 450 feet (137m) and 400feet (150m) for men's cricket, and between 360 feet (110m) to 420feet (130m) for women's cricket]

Image

•> There are three main parts of cricket field

  • Close Infield
  • Inner Field
  • Outer Field

🔰 Cricket Pitch

•> A Cricket Pitch is rectangular field approximately at the centre of the cricket field where most of the important actions of the game like batting and bowling takes place.

Top and side view drawings of a Cricket Pitch measured with length, width, and crease markings

🔹The length of a cricket pitch is 22 yards whereas the width of the cricket pitch is 3.33 yards.

22 yards is the distance between the two wickets(stumps) on both ends of a cricket pitch. The complete length of a cricket pitch including the extra space behind the two wickets(1.3 yards each side) is approximately 24.6 yards.

Dimension Size (yards)
1 Length of the pitch from wicket to wicket 22.0

2 Length of the pitch from crease to crease 19.3

3 Length of a cricket pitch from edge to edge 24.6

4 Width of the pitch used during the game 3.33

5 Total width of the cricket pitch 4.0

🔹A cricket pitch is 20.12 meters in length and 3.05 meters in width.

Dimension Size (in meter)
1 Length of the pitch from wicket to wicket 20.12 m

2 Length of the pitch from crease to crease 17.68 m

3 Length of the pitch from edge to edge 22.56 m

4 Width of the pitch used during the game 3.05 m

5 Total width of the cricket pitch 3.66 m

🔹A cricket pitch measures 66 feet in length and 10 feet in width.

Dimension Size (in feet)
1 Length of the pitch from wicket to wicket 66 feet

2 Length of the pitch from crease to crease 58 feet

3 Length of the pitch from edge to edge 74 feet

4 Width of the pitch used during the game 10 feet

5 Total width of the cricket pitch 12 feet

•> A rope is placed around the ground at a distance of 80 yards from the pitch. This rope is observed as boundary.

•> The stumps are rooted at both ends on the bowling crease, in the mid with distance of 22-yards between them. Two carved small pieces of wood are placed on stumps, called bails.

•> White parallel lines are drawn on both ends in front of the stumps, at a distance of 1.2 metres from stumps is called batting / popping crease.

•> Another set of parallel lines are drawn perpendicular to batting crease and adjacent to bowling crease is called return crease.

Detailed plan of the various creases of a Cricket Pitch with dimensions

The width of the bowling crease is 8.66' (264 cm) with a minimum popping width of 12' (366 cm) in front.

The Wicket is placed 4' (122 cm) back from the popping crease.

🔰 Crease

During a game of cricket, a pitch is marked with a few white lines known as the “Crease“.

  • Bowling crease
  • Popping/ Batting crease
  • Return Crease

🔸Bowling Crease: The bowling crease is the line on which the wickets are placed. It is the line which is perpendicular to the length of the pitch and marks the beginning of actual cricket pitch on which the game is played. This crease is 2.64 m long.

🔸Popping crease: The popping crease is in front of and parallel to the bowling crease. It is 1.22m from the bowling crease and is marked to a minimum of 1.83m on either side of the two middle stumps(3.66 m long) and is unlimited in length.

The popping crease serves a dual purpose :

🏷️Line of safe zone for Batting Person: The popping crease serves as the extent of the safe zone for a batsman. At any given point in time during the game(except while running between the wickets), at least some part of the batsman (including the bat he/she may be holding) needs to be inside the popping crease, for both batsman whether the one on striker end or on Non-striker end.

Also while taking runs like singles or doubles by running between the wickets, both the batsman need to touch this line in their respective sides with the bat in their hand to complete one run.

🏷️Front foot 'No Ball' : To determine if the bowler has delivered a front foot 'No Ball' or not. This can happen if the front leg of the bowler crosses the popping crease completely while delivering the ball.

🔸Return Crease: The return crease is marked by two parallel lines and is perpendicular to both popping and bowling crease as well as adjacent to bowling crease. The two return crease are drawn at a distance of 1.32m either side from the middle of the stumps. They are 2.44 m long in length.

The return crease serves a dual purpose.

🏷️Wide Ball: To indicate if the ball delivered by the bowler is too wide to play (otherwise termed as a 'Wide Ball)

🏷️Back foot 'No Ball' : To indicate a back-foot “No Ball” by a bowler. This type of decision is given when a bowler’s back foot crosses the return crease on the sides of the pitch while delivering the ball.

•> A Quick Glance

Image

Dimension Size(m) [feet]

•> Dist. of return crease from middle stump 1.32m (4ft 4in)

•> Distance of popping crease from stumps 1.22m (4 ft)

•> Distance between the two return crease 2.64 (8 ft 8 in)

🔰Wicket

•> In cricket, the term 'wicket' has several meanings but here we are talking about the set of 3 stumps and 2 bails which together forms a wicket and can can be seen on the pitch. We have 2 set of wickets during a cricket match.

Image

•> Each stump is referred to by a specific name:

  • Off stump is the stump on the off side of the wicket (the same side as the batsman's bat).
  • Middle (Lie) stump is the centre stump, the middle of the three stumps.
  • Leg stump is the stump on the on side of the wicket (the same side as the batsman's legs).

•> These names are relative to the batsman, so a right-handed batsman's leg stump becomes the off stump when a left-handed player is batting.

•> Each bail has a barrel, longer spigot and a shorter spigot.

Collection of measured elevation and plan drawings of a Cricket Wicket labeled with height, width, depth, and details

Dimension Size(inch) Size(cm)

Height of the stumps 28.0 71.10

Minimum Thickness of each stump 1.375 3.49

Maximum Thickness of each stump 1.5 3.81

Total width of the wickets 9.0 22.90

Overall length of bails 4.3125 10.95

Length of the barrel of the bails 2.125 5.40

Length of the longer spigot of the bails 1.375 3.49

Length of shorter spigot of the bails 0.8125 2.06
