Especially since Mallu has been by his side before, during and after he reformed, so there has to be a reason why you feel he would leave her.

yes... yes..Mallika ..is for Bhatuk.. That's what I am telling.. recently read too many FFs and messed up all in mind. Just slip of thought😔 But Tapur standing for herself is very appreciable👏

Chapter 23: Changing Times, Changing Ties

A/N: Hello everyone! Thank you for all the love you showered in the last chapter. We are truly overwhelmed. Now time is flying in the story as well. Midway through this chapter, we have taken a 6-month leap, during which time a lot has changed. I hope you enjoy all the new relationship dynamics.

Do let us know in the comments. They truly mean a lot to us.

Also, a reminder that we posted in the previous chapter's A/N as well: Due to Ramadan and work responsibilities, we may not be able to post chapters every Friday. We are not going on a hiatus… but the gap between chapters may increase. We will try our level best to not break the rhythm though…But if it happens, please excuse us and stay tuned for the story ahead!

Love

Ashley and Ayesha

22nd January 1943, Roy Chaudhary Kothi

Batuk brought a distraught Tapur back to the Kothi, and making her sit on a sofa, he quickly went to fetch water for her.

When he returned after a few seconds, he noticed that Tupur had joined her sister on the sofa as well and was trying to soothe her. One look at Tupur’s face told Batuk that she knew what had just happened at the Haveli as well.

After making Tapur drink the water, he kneeled in front of her, and holding her hands gently, he said in an agonized whisper,

"I am so sorry Tapur… mere bhai aur kaka… I am sorr… Mm… mujhe maaf ker dou please."

Tapur had gone completely numb when Som had called her a Daaghdaar Ladki. Suddenly, all the bitterness of her past had crept in, making her want to die again and again.

She was so disturbed that she couldn't even control how her body had started trembling.

Her mind was telling her not to give satisfaction to Som and make him pompously believe that his words mattered to her. But she just couldn't control herself.

She was so traumatized that she felt as if she would just fall down and crumble in front of those tyrants when two strong arms pulled her against a solid, firm body that oozed nothing but warmth and compassion.

It was Batuk Roy Chaudhary… an enemy who had turned into her ally.

In any normal circumstance, Tapur would never have welcomed such a gesture from any man, let alone him!

But here, she was just so thankful to him for lending his support, not only physically, but verbally also.

She heard everything he had said to his brother. She couldn't understand some of those words, but just from the way he was holding her so protectively, she could have said he was defending her!

And then he called her his sister!

She didn't know why, but she felt as if Som had taken Chandrachur's form and had undressed her in front of so many people.

And then, suddenly, someone put a chaadar on her head to sheathe her completely from the vicious people in the outside world.

She didn't know why she wanted to weep at that point.

She recalled how initially he used to treat her and Tupur with haughty disdain. Not to mention all the planning and plotting that he had done, the complete havoc he had wrought, to separate her from Bondita Didi, to cause Bondita Didi pain. Tapur and Tupur had become collateral damage once again, and that feeling of being dehumanised had left both of them completely hurt and angry.

But after he got ill, things started changing between them.

The day he first tried to apologize to her, calling her Tupur all the while, reinforcing their opinion that he did indeed consider them as less than human, Tapur’s anger and frustration had caused her to lose her temper and yell at him.

But after that day, Batuk had humbly and sincerely tried to apologize to her and had shown nothing but courteous behaviour whenever they were in the same room.

She didn't show him any warmth or friendliness in reciprocation, but she always noticed how nice he had gotten with them.

She had seen two extremely different kinds of men in her life.

First, there was the misfortune to meet vultures like Chandrachur, and then, his complete opposite, she had found a sweet brother in the form of Anirudh.

But Batuk was different.

He once had been like a predator to her before, in fact, worse than a predator, someone who had simply treated them as pawns to be used in his grand plan of revenge. But the later events made him turn into a mixture of kindness and humanity!

From an indifferent relative to a cruel monster, he had now become a compassionate stranger to her…

A well-known stranger!

A stranger who had tried to respectfully gain the place of an acquaintance time and again.

Initially, she hadn’t wanted to accept it, but he really had turned quite sweet…

He almost always had a vulnerable look in his eyes… as if he truly held himself guilty for all his misdeeds against the two sisters. And his overall mannerism… it all just, without her ever wanting this to happen, thawed her heart bit by bit over time.

Even though he had returned to the haveli, she was still treating both him and his father, and hence frequently visited. And although Tapur was still not very friendly with him, she noticed him thoroughly.

He would always rise up from his chair to welcome her, and would always ask her for refreshments. He used to behave like a true gentleman, and a gracious human being too.

His good behaviour not only extended to her but to Tupur also. However, both Tapur and Tupur continued to be wary of him.

For Tapur, the change in opinion about Batuk came slowly and gradually.

But it all had changed one day for Tupur when Batuk was driving in his jeep and saw her walking on the road.

He had stopped the vehicle immediately. And instead of asking her from his driving seat, he showed some basic manners and courtesy, got down and asked if he could drop her somewhere.

Tupur got confused. She had been fasting and was going to a mandir a few kilometres away.

One look at her pale face and Batuk insisted on driving her there.

She was very reluctant. She had seen a pile of ledgers in his jeep and had understood that he was going out for some important official work.

But when he insisted in such an… "Anirudh-like" manner, she didn't know how she agreed and got in the jeep with him.

Once they reached the mandir, she profusely thanked him. He asked her how she would return, and she told him that it would take a while because she had some special puja in the mandir.

After that, he hadn't said anything and she also went inside.

After almost an hour and a half, when she came out of the mandir again, she saw him standing next to his jeep, talking to a tall, handsome man who appeared to be a friend of his.

Tupur was completely taken aback. She hadn't expected to see him there at all.

Feeling overwhelmed, she reached him and called him out softly,

"Batuk babu"

As both the men turned towards her, Batuk smiled and said,

"Oh Tupur, tum aagayee! Good. Mien tumhara hi…'' stopping himself short, he then quickly changed the topic and said,

"Uhh Tupur, yeh mera dost hai SD, uhmm… I mean, Siddharth Devesh Chakravorty. Yeh mere aur Bondita ke school ka sathi hai. Aur Siddharth, yeh Bondita ki behen hai, Tupur Das."

Siddharth's gaze had been fixed on her face all through the introductions. Feeling self-conscious, she drew her ghunghat tighter to hide her scar, nodded towards him in acknowledgement, and was about to leave when Batuk asked quickly,

"Tupur, tum free hogai kia? Uhhmm mien ghar hi janay wala tha… tou mien hi tumhe chhod deta hun kothi tak."

This remark made Siddharth snap out of his reverie too. Shaking Batuk's hand and passing another appreciative glance towards Tupur, he promised to see them later. And then, he left.

As Batuk went towards the passenger's seat to open the door for Tupur, instead of entering, she looked into his eyes deeply and asked softly,

"Batuk babu, aap gaye kyun nahi thay?"

To her amazement, she saw his ears turning red as he gulped nervously and without meeting her eyes, said,

"Woh…uhh…asal mein yahan.. uhh… aik client… haan cc…client aanay walay thay tou…" and then, as if trying to prove his claims, he gestured towards a nearby market and said mindlessly,

"Woh wahan… milne walay thay…mager… uhhh…woh aye hi nahi. Mien.. umm… mien yahan unka hi wait… I mean… intizar ker raha tha. Phir mujhe ittefaq se Siddharth mil gaya, tou mien uss se baat kerne laga."

A knowing look appeared in her eyes as a small smile crept to her lips.

Apart from Anirudh Jamai babu, no other man had shown any kind of gallantry to her… and now this nervous silly boy was trying to walk in his brother's shoes too!

He didn't even realize it, but his gallantry and chivalrous gestures only made him resemble his brother Anirudh more and more! And this warmed her heart very much.

They had stayed quiet on the way back home, but when he had stopped the jeep outside the Kothi, he had gotten out to open her side of the door and helped her out too.

As she was entering the Kothi's gate, she turned around and found him getting back in the driver's seat.

With a teasing smile, she called him out,

"Batuk Babu…"

When he looked up in response, she just bit her smile, and heading towards him, she extended her hand.

Perplexed, he extended his hand too in response, and his eyes widened when he saw her opening his palm and putting some Prashad in it as she said teasingly,

"Agli baar mujhe mandir chodne aao aur mera intizar kerna ho, aur ittefaq se koi dost bhi na milay samay bitaane ke liye, tou mandir ke ander hi ajana. Bhagwaan khaa nahi jayenge aapko."

She had caught his lie!!

Batuk turned red in embarrassment, but a sheepish smile bloomed on his face as he saw Tupur laughing. And then, ruffling his hair lightly, she said with the smile shining in her eyes,

"Dhanyawad, Batuk babu."

The smile never left his lips as he saw her returning inside.

He had always found her very soft-spoken, but he could feel the frigidity in her stance for him even without her ever raising her voice on him.

But now, he could sense warmth and genuine affection for himself in her stance and his heart was overjoyed.

He had wronged both these sisters so much. And believed that he had hurt them beyond repair. But it seemed that the damage was not irreparable.

A genuine and sincere effort from his side thawed Tupur's heart for him.

And now, after everything that happened in the haveli a while ago, he had managed to melt Tapur's heart completely too.

Watching him so humbly kneeling in front of her and apologizing with all the remorse in the world, something just clicked within Tapur's being as she stirred.

She had stopped trembling now. Looking down at his hands that were holding hers, she didn't try to extract them from his gentle grasp.

She didn't feel any repulsion from this man!

Heaving a deep sigh, she looked for the right words, and then said,

"Batuk Babu… doosron ke gunaah ki maafi aap kyun maang rhe hai?"

Batuk looked into her eyes. They were getting calm now. The storms that he had seen in them a while ago had started to settle down. He realized that the iron lady had eventually braved it all out!

He felt so proud of her at that moment!

Squeezing her hands gently, he managed a wounded smile as he mumbled,

"Mager Tapur, woh hain tou mere apne hi na! Pehle hi miene tumhien kam dukh diya hai jo abh woh loag bhi… aur woh bhi aik baar nahi… baar baar. I swear Tapur… mere liye tum mien aur meri behen Shashu mien koi difference… I mean… farq nahi hai. Unhone meri Shashu ko bhi hurt kia hai… meri Boudi ko bhi… aur abh woh tumhien bhi baar baar zakham dete hain… I don't like it! I … mujhe nahi accha lagta."

Hearing his sincerely spoken words, the storm that had been brewing in her heart and was ready to tear her entire existence apart, settled down. Her heart which had broken into so many pieces finally felt like getting restructured.

And this time, a genuine smile came to her lips. She again looked down at his hands grasping hers, and her fingers tightened around him.

He noticed the movement. His eyes looked at their hands too, and then, his gaze met her bright eyes that were now shining with unshed tears. With a wobbly smile, she said,

"Aap ko pata hai Batuk babu, aap mien aur un dono mien kia farq hai?"

When he shook his head, she said,

"Aap ka zameer zinda hai abhi. "

Noticing how his eyes narrowed on her claim, she realized that he didn't understand her. And so, she thought for a few moments, and then said,

"Aap ko apni ghalti pehchan’na aur phir usko sudhaarna aata hai. Jabki aapke Kaka aur Daaktar babu ko ghaltion per datay rehna, jamay rehna hi aata hai. Woh aap ke apne tou hain, lekin aap un jaise nahi hain. Balki aap apne Anirudh dada jaise hain."

When Batuk grinned on hearing this, Tapur's smile deepened too as she said,

"Aap ki apne Anirudh dada se sirf shakal hi nahi milty, balki aap ka dil bhi unke jaisa hai. Aur isi wajeh se aap dono ka chahay kitna hi khoon ka rishta kyun na ho aap ke kaka aur Somnath babu se, aap loag un jaise nahi ho sakte. Iss liye, unke buray bartaav ki maafi bhi aap ko maangne ki zarurat nahi hai."

Batuk was happy and surprised to hear all this. Any other woman in her place would have shouted, cried, swooned, or had thrown objects at him.

But here, Tapur was showing strength and immense grace, and Batuk couldn't help but smile proudly as he thought,

Bondita boudi ki behen bhi unki hi terha ki hai… Strong… Brave… Decent!

Before he could respond, he felt Tupur gently holding his arms, making him stand up from his kneeling position.

And then, he heard her say in her ever sweet voice,

"Tapur sahi keh rhy hai. Aur jitna samman hum Anirudh Jamai babu ka kerte hain, aap ka bhi kerne lagay hain."

When Batuk looked at her in disbelief, she smiled and nodded to confirm that he had heard it all right!

She had to go to the nearby marketplace to get some things, and she had gone to the haveli to ask Bondita and Sampoorna if they needed anything too. But there, she heard most of what transpired between the Two Roy Chaudharys and her sister. She would have meddled there and then but then she saw how Binoy, Batuk, and Anirudh had ended up supporting her sister. She saw how Anirudh finished off both those two errant people, and how Batuk had taken Tapur away.

She was… just like Bondita, completely overwhelmed with emotions at such a display of "Right vs. Wrong" within the Roy Chaudhary clan.

She adored and respected this family. And like anyone, she also didn't like it when people within the families fought.

But this was necessary!

And she couldn't feel anything but thankful at the way Anirudh and especially Batuk stood for the right. It wasn't any surprise from Anirudh - he always stood by the right.

But having all the verbal and physical support from Batuk came as a very pleasant surprise.

She hoped that the family's internal matters would sort out soon. But right now, she had to show the Younger Roy Chaudhary brother their gratitude and trust in him from this time forward.

And so, wiping his tears that he himself didn't know that he had shed, she beamed at him and Tapur, and just said,

"Sab sahi hojayega. Mager mujhe pata chala hai ki Batuk Babu ke pait mien choohay daud rhe hain. Unka kuch ilaaj bhi tou kerna chahiye na!"

As if to confirm, his tummy made a loud, rumbling sound exactly at that moment, much to Batuk's embarrassment, making Tapur cackle, Tupur gasp, and then, causing all three of them to burst into laughter!

22nd January 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 11:00 pm

"Oh my!!!" Mallika gasped on the phone and then started laughing crazily.

She had to stop to catch a breath, and then she finally managed to speak,

"Ohh Batuk! Tum aur tumhara pait! Hamesha ghalat waqt per hi awaz kerte hain! Remember, that time jab…"

Before Mallika could finish her sentence, she let go of a fresh peal of laughter. Batuk, who was basking in the glory of hearing that rich, wholesome laughter from the other side of the phone immediately understood what she meant to say.

It was a strange habit of his stomach to make loud, rumbling noises right after they engaged in extremely pleasurable sex.

They had laughed about it many times before also, and tonight too, Batuk couldn't stop himself from joining Mallika in her laughter riot…

Exactly as before!

It took her several minutes to regain her composure and get sober. Suddenly feeling a strange emotion, she realized how intimately they knew each other… before everything fell apart.

Her laughter completely vanished as she quietened down.

Everything fell apart because I had started expecting more from him.

She felt a pang in her heart at this thought. However, she quickly tried to restore her mood by reminding herself,

"Even if we are not lovers anymore, at least I am his friend. He likes to talk to me and share his stuff with me. I should be thankful for this only…right?"

Trying to boost herself, she endeavoured to restore her mood and focused on being his "good friend" only now.

Trying to get back to what he had told her, with a lingering smile on her lips, she said softly,

"But I am glad Batuk… Jo kuch tumhare Kaka aur Som dada ne kia, woh theek tou nahi tha. Mager jo kuch tum ne kia, aur kaha… I am so proud of you. You really did a great job!"

The unsaid reference to their sexual life had suddenly made Batuk remember many other things…

His heart yearned for her proximity some more.

And his body also started aching to feel her softness against himself all over again.

He had been trying to keep all those emotions at bay since they had decided to renew their friendship.

He had not expressed it to her, and he didn't dare to tell this to himself too, but he missed her very much… They regularly talked to each other on the phone, and they had found an emotional intimacy like never before…

But he needed her beyond emotions too…

He craved her…

Physically!

There was something very profound that he had found with Mallika only.

In the past, when he used to feel that his need for Mallika was increasing, he used to break the cycle by cheating on her.

But he knew deep in his heart that what he found with other girls was just sexual gratification.

But with Mallika, it used to be so much more.

He never wanted to address those feelings and emotions back then.

But now… He didn't know why even the thought of being physical with anyone else used to make him feel… absolutely nothing!

He had tried to keep all these feelings from Mallika. He knew she was just looking for a friend in him now. And he had promised her that he would become that friend in her life on whom she could lean whenever in need of support.

He didn't want to break her trust now by telling her that he craved to become more than her friend again.

He didn't want to taint their friendship by mixing it with something else.

And so, trying hard to shut his heart up, he shifted all his focus on what she was saying.

Her soft voice full of appreciation for him made his heart want to lose its control once again. But then, acknowledging that Batuk wasn't ready to give in to those demands, his heart just decided to suppress those feelings again.

However, her words did warm his heart and make it feel giddy.

Smiling goofily as if he was a child whose parent was extremely happy with their results, he finally replied,

"Thank you, Mallika. Tapur bechari buht disturb hogai thy. I had to do it for her."

The smile never leaving her voice, she added,

"And you made her your sister."

Shaking his head, he too smiled as he replied,

"Well… yes… Woh Boudi ki aur Dada ki behen hai, tou technically meri bhi hai."

After a moment's silence, Mallika asked in an incredulous tone,

"I am curious, Batuk… And surprised too. I mean, I have known you for a while lekin miene tumko kabhi girls ko behen, boudi type ki nazar se dekhte hue nahi dekha. I mean… chalo, Shashu aur Bondita ki baat alag hai. Mager ager Tapur problem mien na hoty, tou kia tum phir bhi uske liye aise hi sochte? I mean… kia phir bhi tum usko behen hi maante?"

Contemplating his answer, after a few moments, he replied,

"Well… shayad pehle nahi. Mager abh jab se miene behen aur boudi ke roop ko qareeb se dekha aur feel kia hai, thanks to Shashu and Boudi, aur Sampoorna maa ke roop mien maa ko feel kia hai… tabb se I think, mera auraton ko dekhne ka nazariya badal sa gaya hai. Abh mujhe aurton mien yehi teen roop nazar atay hain… aur kuch nahi."

Mallika thought for a while as her heart started beating a little faster than before.

Ager yeh aurton ki izzat kerne laga hai…tou kia yeh abh unko zarurat ki nazar se nahi dekhta?

She wondered. A small part of her heart felt happy that he probably wasn't just going out and indulging in mindless sex with random girls at clubs and bars.

But a major part of her heart sank too, as she wondered out aloud,

"Kia sab hi aurton ke liye abh tum aisa feel kerte ho? I mean… Kia tum abh… I mean…"

Her reluctance was not lost on Batuk. And he understood perfectly well what she meant to ask.

The feelings that he had suppressed in his heart with so much difficulty just a little while ago resurfaced with a force that shook his entire core.

Feeling giddy all over again, his heartbeats accelerated, and he replied to her in a voice thick with an unknown emotion,

"Mien sirf aik hi ladki ke liye abh kuch aur, kuch different feel kerta hun, Mallika."

His tone…his words…

And the way he had said them!

It was all magical!

All of it created a hazy mist of heat that was acutely felt by both the individuals on the phone.

Both their hearts skipped millions of beats as a heavy, meaningful silence filled the atmosphere on both ends.

Both of them would have remained stuck in this heat if someone had not banged on Batuk's door.

Snapping out of the reverie, he straightened, and said apologetically,

"I think Mallika, Big D meri dawai le ker aye hain. Aaj jo sab kuch hua, uski wajeh se I was at the Kothi with Tapur and Tupur most of the time. Iss liye mien deir se aaya aur dawai reh gai."

Mallika also shuddered from the magic that Batuk had created between them a few moments ago.

Straightening up, trying to compose herself and pretending to ignore everything, she said quickly,

"Haan… Haan… Batuk. Jao… Umm… I will talk to you tomorrow… theek hai?"

"Yeah, theek hai… Good night Mallika… "

When the call ended, she didn't move for a while. The phone receiver still clutched in her hand, she splayed it across her chest. Sighing, she whispered one name,

"Batuk…"

On the other end, Batuk also stayed immobile for a while. Slowly placing the receiver back in the cradle, he picked up her locket that was lying open on his nightstand. Running the tip of his finger over Mallika's picture, he whispered,

"Mallika…"

22nd July 1943, 12:30 a.m., Roy Chaudhary Haveli

"Oh, God! Aaj buht zyada thak gaya hun mien!", Batuk said with a groan, as he stretched his arms out and flopped onto one of the cots lying in the courtyard.

After nearly 7 months, Tapur had finally completed Binoy's treatment, with only periodic maintenance required. The treatment had worked better than expected, giving him a second chance at life that led to a change in his perspective. He was now determined to live his life to the fullest, devoting all his time to his family. “His family” now also included Tapur and Tupur. His gratitude towards Tapur, who gave him this new life, led him to grow extremely fond of her. Over time, this fondness also extended to Tupur, and he had practically adopted them, a sentiment reciprocated by the fatherless girls.

The family had decided to celebrate his recovery by throwing a party. And since the party was in Binoy's honour, his family had decided to make it a British styled party, just as he liked. The party had been a grand success, but the youngsters were in no mood to end the celebration just yet and had given in to Batuk's idea of gathering in the courtyard for the "after-party"

"Achha?" Tapur asked, all false innocence as she and Tupur took their seats on the other cot opposite the one Batuk was spread out on. "Mager jab se hum aaye hai humne tou aapko koi tayyari kerte nahi dekha Batuk Babu? Jashn shuru hone ke baad hi neeche aaye? Phir itna kaise thak gaye?"

His eyes widened, and throwing his hands in air, he exclaimed,

"Kaise thak gaya!!! Matlab!!! Yaaaar!!!!

"Sabse important kaam mien hi tou ker raha tha ghar mein!" Batuk said with sham indignance.

And then he added, completely exasperated, "Aap sab neeche party ki tayyari ker rahe thay tab mien upar Rudhi aur Aaru ko sambhaal raha tha. Baap re!!!! Yeh koi kamm mushkil kaam tha kia?"

As Tapur and Tupur started laughing at his remarks, he stretched some more on the cot, and holding his head in his hand, he added more details to his mock complaints,

"Arey mien tou heiran hun inn dono se. Itne chhote say hain, mager bhai… Poora nacha ker rakh dete hain!"

As Tapur and Tupur rolled out in a fit of laughter over how he was so dramatically saying all this about the children who were actually his lifelines, he shook his head and said,

"Aap loag nahi samajh sakty meri kia haalat ki hai inn dono ne aaj. Arey jab se crawl kerna sikhe hai dono, rukte hi nahi hai! Bas floor pe rakha nahi ke shuru ho jaate hai… Kabhi bed ke neeche, kabhi table ke neeche, kabhi yahan, kabhi wahan. Aur aik ko pakda tou doosra bhaagne lagta hai… Aur cot mein rakho tou chillana shuru… Pata nahi itni energy aati kahan se hai dono mein. Apne mamma-papa ke jaise Gunde bann gaye hai dono!"

He was so engrossed in the detailed accounting that he missed how Tapur and Tupur had straightened up suddenly, and how they tried to contain their giggles. He also missed how Tapur had tried to subtly gesture at him to hit the brake pedal and look behind too!

However, his tongue got tied the minute he heard a stern voice interjecting,

"Gunde?"

He knew he was doomed!

Instantly sitting up, he gulped hard. Without even turning he knew that his Big D and Boudi were standing at the back door of the Haveli.

From Big D's tone even, he could fathom the kind of identical glares they must be wearing on their faces.

Sampoorna was also standing at the door and was passing sympathetic glances to Batuk, while Tapur and Tupur were trying really hard to not let out their giggles.

He looked at them helplessly, and his expressions made it harder for them to control their mirth.

Narrowing his eyes, he glared at them, and gestured to them conveying effectively an empty threat that "Okay bacchhoo!! Tum dono ko tou mien baad mien dekhta hun!" When it didn't scare them at all, resignedly sighing, he finally turned around to drown in the ghadda that he had dug for himself!!

Without meeting Anirudh and Bondita's eyes, he started,

"Woh… Big D, Boudi, mien tou bas… mien sirf itna… I was saying that…" he stuttered, looking down at his feet, trying to figure out how to escape their ire.

Anirudh and Bondita took one look at the stammering Batuk, then at Tapur and Tupur who had now wide smirks on their faces, and then at each other before bursting into laughter, unable to carry on the charade.

Tapur, Tupur and Sampoorna also joined in the laughter, followed shortly by Batuk himself. The new arrivals also sat down on adjacent cots.

"Waise, gundo ki baat ker hi rahe thay, tou hai kahan dono?" Tupur asked Bondita.

"Maa aur Thakuma ke paas hai abhi. Aaj wahi pe soyenge." Bondita answered with a smile.

Ever since the twins had started sleeping through the night, most of the family often volunteered to keep them for the night. This was something that Anirudh and Bondita were happy about since the babies got accustomed to being with the other family members, which would help them once Bondita returned to work. Not to mention, they got more uninterrupted time for themselves.

Raising his arms in the air as if thanking the Lord, thudding back on the cot tiredly, Batuk said,

"Thank God Thaku maa aur Sumati aunty are back from their tirth. Koi tou hai iss ghar mien jo unn dono badmaashon ko control ker sakta hai! Baap re!!!"

Anirudh and Bondita laughed at Batuk's nautanki as Bondita asked curiously,

"Waise Batuk, tumko kyun lagta hai ki Maa aur Thaku maa se sambhal jayeinge woh dono? I mean, jo kaam unke SUUUUUUPER CHACHU ko mushkil laga, woh un dono becharion ko kaise asaan lagay ga?"

Batuk looked at his boudi and teasingly quipped,

"Well… Jo loag TUMHIEN sambhaal sakte thay boudi, woh dunia ke KISI bhi terha ke bacchay ko sambhaal sakte hain. I mean… Boudi, " stifling his laughter at Bondita's thunderous expressions, he added something that he had picked from Mallika, and said, "Don't mind, jee, mager Boudi, you really were a handful as a kid!"

His mouth shut as a cushion landed directly on his face. But even that cushion could not control his sharp crackle of laughter. And watching him, even Tapur and Tupur joined him.

Even Anirudh couldn't hold back his mirth, and when Bondita glared at him and mouthed, "Aap bhi, Pati babu?" He shrugged and whispered, "Well… ghalat tou nahi hai. You were quite a handful, Bondita!"

Batuk and Tapur Tupur heard this and their laughter intensified. Although Tapur Tupur couldn't understand the language, they still got the gist just by looking at Bondita's irritated and Anirudh's teasing expressions.

Adding fuel, Sampoorna also chimed in to tease Bondita a little more, "Waise Bondita…baat tou sahi hai. Tum thyn tou buht shararti… aur tumhare tark! Baapa re! Poore gaanv mien bhonchal aur Anirudh bechare ke ghar mien tou bhukambh hi laa ker rakhty thyn. Aur abh tumhare bacchay bhi tumhare jaise hi nikal rhe hain. Aik damm khatarnak!"

Watching her dramatic expressions and hearing her deliberately exaggerated accounting, everyone burst into another round of silly laughter. Bondita first pouted to show her irritation, but then she couldn't stop herself from joining them too.

They were all pulling her leg, and she knew that none of them were serious. It was all good-natured jesting that was happening after a thoroughly eventful day and a blockbuster party.

It was all happening because they were all extremely happy in their hearts, and wanted to extend the moments of happiness some more by adding laughter to them…

Her heart filled with warmth as she thought,

Iss ghar ne buht saray aansu dekhe hain. Abh is ghar mien hassi goonjne ki baari hai.

Finally, when everyone sobered down, Batuk glanced at Tapur Tupur and asked,

"Accha, tum dono batao… yeh shehri-style ki party kaisi lagy? You guys enjoyed na? I mean… accha laga na tum dono ko??"

When they both replied to him excitedly how much they loved the party, Batuk glanced at Tupur and teasingly said,

"Haan haan Tupur jee, aap ko tou buht maza aaya hi hoga. SD aur Vardaan jo aye hue thay!"

His remark caught everyone's attention and they started smiling meaningfully while Tupur turned red and whispered,

"Kia Batuk babu… aap bhi."

Looking at Anirudh, Batuk winked. He had introduced Tupur and Siddharth a few months ago when he had met him in the Tulsipur marketplace out of the blue.

Siddharth Devesh Chakravorty was his and Bondita's school friend who had moved to Calcutta and had settled there.

Finding an old friend after so long was definitely amazing, and he had invited him to the haveli also to meet Bondita.

But Siddharth had met Tupur again instead, about which Batuk came to know later.

Siddharth had met Tupur coincidentally at the mandir where he had taken his 3 years old son, Vardaan too. His son was asking him curiously why Durga maa sat on a lion. Tupur was behind them, and she had recognized Siddharth as Batuk's friend too. Finding his son's curiosity very cute, she waited for Siddharth's reply to him. However, when he stuttered, clearly indicating that he didn't know much about it all, she couldn't control herself from interjecting.

Siddharth was first surprised, but he found her very soft-spoken and sweet.

And apparently, so did Vardaan!

That day, Vardaan had found a great friend in Tupur, and Siddharth absolutely loved how they both bonded over mythological details from the scriptures.

He had lost his wife 2 years ago and had been raising his son alone in Calcutta while handling his business.

Feeling extremely lonely and finding it difficult to manage a 3-years old child who needed all his attention, he had decided to come back to his native place, Tulsipur. He had hoped to reconnect with old friends and he was lucky to get back in touch with Batuk.

However, his son had not dealt so well with the changed surroundings and had become quite reserved and cranky.

When he told his problem to Batuk on phone, he invited Siddharth and Vardaan to his place again, citing that the Roy Chaudharys had a lot of kids of different sizes and ages and Vardaan could have a great time with them all.

Before going to the haveli, he had come to the mandir though, and finding Tupur there had turned into a happy coincidence.

When he told Tupur that he was on his way to the Roy Chaudhary haveli, she had also exclaimed happily that Vardaan would have an excellent time there with all the kids.

That meeting was not their last!

Vardaan definitely loved the Roy Chaudhary haveli, and he started urging his father to bring him there often… but surprisingly, his major interest did not lie in playing with the kids.

In fact, to Siddharth's surprise, Vardaan insisted on meeting Tupur as he loved how sweetly she used to tell him amazing stories… and how nicely she treated him always.

The two developed a special bond that both Batuk and Siddharth had noticed.

And Batuk also noticed how fixated even Vardaan's father was with Tupur too.

He was very interested to know about Tupur's previous husband and everything about her.

Batuk had caught him watching her with admiration and an inexplicable expression on multiple occasions. And, after giving it a thought, he decided to take matters into his own hand as he directly and bluntly told him,

"Siddharth, Tupur meri behen hai. Ager tum uske liye kuch special feel kerte ho tou tum mujhe bata sakte ho. Mager dhyaan rahay… meri behen ne apni life mien buht dukh dekhe hain. Only if you are serious, tou hi agay badhne ka sochna. Warna nahi."

And Siddharth had just smiled and replied,

"Batuk… tum jantay ho mujhe. Tumhari behen na sirf buht sundar hai, balki uska mann bhi buht sundar hai. Mien usko apne jeeven mien shamil kerna chahta hun… sirf Vardaan ke liye nahi, balki apne liye bhi. Ager tum bura na maano tou kia mien tumhari behen se baat ker sakta hun?"

Batuk had not replied at once. He asked for some time, and in the meanwhile, he discussed the entire matter with Anirudh and Bondita. Anirudh used his sources to check on the credibility of the guy and his business, and then, he gave the green signal to Batuk, which he passed on to Siddharth.

While discussing with Anirudh, Batuk had mentioned that he had an inkling that Tupur also would probably develop a soft corner for Siddharth once he approached her.

He had seen them interacting at the Kothi when Vardaan would visit Tupur and the kids.

He had liked them together… and he really wished that his sister would find her happiness in the form of his friend Siddharth.

Now, both he and Anirudh were waiting for Siddharth's official proposal to Tupur. They had told Binoy also, and he had suggested inviting Siddharth and Vardaan to this party.

They had watched him approaching Tupur there, and Bondita and Sampoorna even managed to eavesdrop a little too on their discussion.

They knew it was wrong…but they just didn't want anything wrong to happen with their Tupur again.

And so, they had all heard how sweetly Siddharth had proposed marriage to Tupur. They even heard how Tupur had told him that her life's decision was going to be taken by her elders, including her Binoy Zamindar Babu, and her two brothers.

Later, after he had left, Binoy and Anirudh had called Tupur alone and had revealed that they were aware of Siddharth's intention.

Binoy had laid his hand on her head gently and said,

"Dekho Tupur beti… Tumhare sath aik baar zabardasti ka faisla ho chuka hai. Buht saal tak tum uss aik ghalat faislay ki saza bhugatti rahy ho. Hum nahi chahte ke abh tumhare sath aisa kuch ho. Jis terha mien Shashwati ko poori ijazat dun ga apni zindagi apne marzi se jeene ki, usi terha mien tumhien bhi ijazat deta hun."

Even Anirudh told her,

"Tupur, hum jantay hai ki tum yeh faisla Thaku maa, baba, mujh per aur Batuk per chhod rahy ho. Lekin hum chahte hain ki abh ki baar faisla tum apne dil ki marzi ka kerou.

Miene aur Bondita ne Siddharth ke baray mien pata kerwaya tha jab Batuk ne humien bataya tha. Woh accha admi hai. Uski pehli patni ke sath uski shadi 5 saal rahy, jis mien uski patni uss ke sath khush rahy thy. Phir, jaise tumhie Siddharth ne bataya hi hai, uska dihaant hogya aur abh Siddharth Calcutta se wapis Tulsipur aagya hai apne bete ke sath. Uska karobar accha hai… aur uss mien koi buri adat bhi nahi hai. Abh baqi tum ko dekhna hai ki tumhara dil kia kehta hai. Ager Naa kerni ho, tou bejhijhak ker dena. Ager Haan kerni ho, tou apne dil ki poori razamandi se kerna. Hum sab har faislay mien tumhare sath hain."

Tupur had some apprehensions, but then they all got busy with the after-party, and she sort of forgot about all her concerns until now that Batuk brought it up again.

Noticing how Tupur had turned red at the mention of Siddharth, he knew that he had been right. Tupur also had feelings for Siddharth, and Batuk was happy with this subtle confirmation of his guess. And so, sharing an eye conversation with his Big D, returning his attention back to Tupur, smiling widely now, he piped in,

"Ahem ahem! Look at you! Abhi se Siddharth Babu ka soch ker sharma rhy ho!"

Hiding her face in both hands, Tupur whispered,

"Dhatt!!!"

Finding her very cute, Bondita got up and wrapped her in a warm embrace while chiding Batuk,

"Batuk ke bacchay! Pehle mere peeche paday thay. Abh Tupur ko tanng kerna shuru ker dia!"

Smiling, Batuk got up from his cot and knelt in front of Tupur, he held her hands and gently pulled them down from her face.

"Tupur… mien sirf mazak ker raha tha. Mager mien sach mein janna chahta hun ki tumhare kia thoughts… I mean… vichaar hain SD ke prop…I mean… shadi ke prastav ko le ker?" He asked her softly, his beautiful hazel eyes full of assurance and love for her.

Looking into his eyes, Tupur then looked at both Tapur and Bondita sitting beside her on both sides. She then looked up and found Anirudh and Sampoorna's compassionate eyes on her too.

Lowering her gaze, her eyes met Batuk's once again as she mumbled meekly,

"Mujhe darr lag raha hai, Batuk babu… mien… pata nahi… Dobara shadi kerna… pata nahi Siddharth babu ne mujh mien kia dekha? Kahin woh bhi Chanrdrachur jaise niklay tou?"

And then wincing, she quickly said, "Nahi nahi… Siddharth babu waise nahi hain. Woh acchay hain. Mager… Ager pehle jaisi koi gadbad hui tou?"

Each one of them understood her fears. And none of them undermined her. The atmosphere had turned super serious.

They all came closer to her and were thinking about how to alleviate her concerns.

That was when, in all his seriousness, holding her hands tightly, Batuk said with extreme emotion and feeling,

"Well Tupur. Ager woh tumhare uss puranay namoonay jaisa nikla naa tou I will kill him. Boudi aur Big D mera case ladien ge. Tum meri khaas gawaah bann jana. Aur mujhe jail se chuddwa lena. Simple!"

Everyone was shocked at such a preposterous suggestion, at such a time…and that too, given with all the seriousness in the world!

And then, as if the ice broke somewhere.

First, Tupur let out a gasp and then broke into an extremely unladylike guffaw.

And then Tapur, Bondita, and Sampoorna thawed and let out a peal of laughter at the incredulity of the situation that Batuk had so creatively and inadvertently created.

As Batuk looked at the ladies howling crazily, he looked up and found his brother staring at him with his mouth open wide.

Confused, he asked,

"What happened? Aisa kia keh dia miene?"

And this time, Anirudh broke into a fit of laughter as he gasped,

"Batuk… Are you for real!!!?"

As Batuk scratched his head in confusion, all of them burst into fresh peals of uncontrollable laughter.

It was finally time to pull his leg now for the most ludicrous suggestion in the world, after all!

It took them all a while to sober down this time.

Poor Batuk would ask "Kia hua, kia hua?", he would pout in irritation, and one of them would start laughing again. Others would join too, and a fresh cycle of silly laughter would ensue.

Finally, giving up, Batuk sat back on one of the cots, crossing his arms across his chest with a full-blown mouth. He looked so cute sulking like a kid that Anirudh finally managed to control his laughter. Sitting next to him, he lovingly poked at his cheeks and said playfully,

"Yeh itne shaandaar ideas hi soojhte rehte hain kia tumko?"

Sampoorna also decided to go and manaao-fy that rootha hua baccha. And so, she ruffled his hair and asked,

"Aur aaj tumhari khaas dost ka bhi phone nahi aaya. Usko bhi koi itna hi behtereen sujhaav de dia tha kya?"

By now, Batuk had clearly understood that it was his absurd suggestion that had made him all laugh at him.

And this fact made him absurdly happy too!

He was just doing his nautanki now, enjoying the cajoling he was receiving from his loved ones.

He would have continued, but the mere mention of Mallika alerted his ears.

Swiftly dropping his pretence, he looked at the watch. It was 1 AM. Looking up towards the window of his room, he wistfully said,

"Haan Sampoorna maa… woh aaj party thy na. Tou miene usko bata dia tha ki ager mien 10:30 PM tak call na kerun tou woh wait na kere aur sou jaye."

And then, looking down at his watch again, he said sadly,

"Abh tou 1 bajj chuka hain. Woh sou gai hogy. Usko subha kaam per jaana hota haina… tou iss liye…"

They all noticed his expressions and the yearning in his voice for that one person.

As if he wanted confirmation of some sort from Mallika's end, Anirudh thought for a while and then said,

"Batuk, call her now. Dekho, shayad woh abhi na soyi ho?"

Looking at his brother's face, he saw that he was completely serious. Tapur also said the same thing.

Reluctantly rising from the cot, he looked at Anirudh's face once again.

Nodding, Anirudh said, "Ager woh call per mil jaye tou tum apne kamre ke khidki se humien thumbs up ka ishara de dena. Aur ager woh na milay tou baahir wapis aajana."

They all waited with bated breaths as Batuk nodded and went inside. Deep down, they all hoped and wished that Batuk could get to talk to Mallika… They all had somehow been touched by his wistfulness just now.

All of them released a sigh of relief as they saw a widely smiling Batuk giving a thumbs up from his room's window.

As they cheered him from down there, they all looked at one another and said unanimously,

"Woh bhi wahan intizaar ker rahy thy!"

Bondita already knew that Mallika had strong feelings for Batuk too. But for so many months, she had been observing them running in circles around each other.

Buht ho gaya… Yeh dono pagal aise hi dosti dosti khelte rahien ge. Mujhe hi kuch kerna hoga abh!

With her decision made, when everyone else was busy talking, she looked towards Batuk's window, and giving a virtual thumbs up to Batuk and Mallika, she whispered,

"Batuk, tumhari Mallika ko wahan se yahan, tumhare paas laane ka kaam abh tumhari boudi kere gy. You just don't worry!"

As she dropped her hand down, she felt someone standing close to her.

She recognized his presence in an instant.

Before she could turn to meet his eyes, he whispered in her ear from behind,

"Aur tumhari boudi ka saath dein ge tumhare Big D… Hamesha!"

Whirling around, she sheepishly looked at him. But his face had a very soft expression as he nodded and said,

"Bondita… Yeh Batuk aik number ka gadha hai. We have to do something iss se pehle ki iski yeh khaas dost titli bann ker phurr hojaye!"

Giggling at his remarks, she held his hand tightly and promised,

"Haan Pati babu… Mien kal se hi Project Bhanwra & Titli Milan per kaam shuru kerty hun!"

She sounded as if she was a military spy, and this extremely silly notion was not lost on both of them.

And as the mood of that night dictated, they both threw back their heads and gave into another bout of light-hearted laughter!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

29th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 9:30 AM

Batuk sank down onto the sofa in the living room, feeling completely out of sorts. Last night, he hadn't been able to speak to Mallika as had become a nightly routine for both of them, and this break in the routine was making him feel completely disgruntled.

Don't know why mien itna soch raha hu. Usne kaha tha ke woh baat nahi ker paaegi. Busy hogy apne kaam mein, he told himself firmly before trying to focus on what was going on around him.

He was sitting on the right-hand corner of the three-seater sofa that faced the main door, with Kaka sitting in the armchair adjacent to him. On his left, the Das ladies were sitting around discussing SD's proposal, which Tupur had not yet responded to.

Bondita was sitting right next to him, her eyes fixed anxiously on the door, as if she was waiting for someone.

He gently bumped her shoulder with his own. And when she looked at him, puzzled, he gently whispered, "Itni chinta mat kerou Boudi, tum jis insan ka itne besabri se intezaar ker rahy hou, woh apne time pe aa hi jaaega. Tab tak hum yahan Tupur pe dhyaan dete hai."

Bondita gave him a tiny smile and both of them turned their attention to the conversation going on to their left.

“Mager Tupur, mujhe samajh mein nahi aa raha ke tum iss rishte ko haan kyun nahi ker rahi!” Sumati was exclaiming with exasperation. “Ladka kaabil hai, achhe ghar ka hai, tumse pyaar kerta hai! Dekho beta, aise zindagi jeene ka doosra mauka sabko nahin milta, tou apna faisla kerne mein ziada der na kerna.”

“Arey nahi Sumati, yeh Tupur ke zindagi ka nirnay hai, soch-samajh ke hi lena chahiye.” Thakuma interjected. “Waise bhi…” she shot a glance at Kaka, “Jaldbaazi mein galat jeevan saathi ko chun’na is parivar ke betiyon ko buht bhaari pad chuka hai. Tupur, tum aaraam se faisla lena. Waise bhi, iss rishte mein sirf Siddharth Babu nahi aayenge, unka beta bhi hai saath mein. Tumhien yeh bhi sochna hai ke kya tum Vardaan ki Maa banne ko tayyar hou?”

“Uska koi sawaal nahi hai Thakuma." Tupur said emotionally. "Vardaan jaan hai meri, aur uski Maa banna mere liye buht khushi ki baat hai.”

“Ohho!" Tapur chirped in, "Vardaan tou abhi se tumhari jaan bann gaya! Aur Vardaan ke Baba?”

Tupur blushed, but then spoke resolutely, “Vardaan ke Baba se mien aaj apne kuch sawaalon ke jawaab maangne waali hunn, aur uske baad hi mien nirnay lungi.”

The conversation made Batuk's mind go to the night of the party held a week back. He had decided to not call Mallika that night, thinking that she would have slept. However she had been waiting up for him, despite the late hour.

Shayad aisa hi hua hoga! He thought, sinking back and closing his eyes. Shayad usey der hou gayi aur usne socha hoga ke mien sou gaya. Ab usey thodi pata hoga ke raat bhar mien uske phone ka intezaar ker raha tha.

His thoughts were interrupted by a squeeze of his left arm. He opened his eyes to look at his Boudi's teasing face. She tugged his arms to make him lean towards her and whispered, "Itna mat socho, jis insan ke na milne pe itna pareshan hou rahe hou, woh bhi apne samay pe tumhe mil hi jaayega…"

Batuk turned red and looked away towards the dining table, where Binoy and Anirudh were talking quietly.

"Anirudh… Tumhari usse phone pe baat hui?"

"Nahi Baba…" Anirudh said with a sigh. "Kuch loagon ko apna raasta wapis dhoondne mien buht waqt lagta hai. Som ko bhi lagay ga."

The day after Kaka's ill-fated attempt at matchmaking, and the resulting confrontation, the family woke up to find Som missing. While searching for him, Anirudh found a letter addressed to him in the study.

"Mujhe Mussoorie ke aik Hospital se naukri ka prastaav aaya tha kuch din pehle. Tab miene socha tha ke mana kar dunga, ghar se itni duur nahi rehna chahta tha mein. Mager ab mien yahan Tulsipur mein nahi reh sakta, isiliye meine yeh naukri swikaar li hai. Hospital ka pata likh raha hun, mager please, jab tak zaroori na hou mujhe contact kerne ki koshish na kerein. Mujhe kuch waqt chahiye sochne ke liye, aur yeh mujhe akele hi kerna padega.

Apna khayal rakhiyega.

Somnath."

Everyone had been shocked on reading the letter and had also been extremely worried. Kaka had even declared that he was going to go to the hospital and get Som back because he somewhere felt responsible for all the fiasco. He had had some time to reflect upon his rudhiwadi soch, his consequent actions, and all his misdeeds. So, naturally feeling responsible for failing Som, and everyone else at home, he had wanted to set things right somehow, starting by bringing Som back, but Anirudh had put his foot down.

He said that Som would be given the time he needed. And since then, the only news the family received about Som was when Anirudh called the Hospital to inquire about his well-being.

"Theek hai beta… bas ab yahi dua hai ke Som apne aap ko dhundne ke is koshish me safal hou jaaye aur apna asal raasta, sahi manzil dhoond sakay."

The reminder of how Anirudh managed to keep an eye on Som without intruding, made Batuk think again.

Kya mujhe bhi pata lagana chahiye ke Mallika theek hai ke nahi? Uske ghar call kerun? Ya Association mein? Mager woh mujhe galat nahi samjhegi na?

Batuk was roused from his musings by Kaka's sharp voice.

"Batuk beta, woh Mandal yahan ka kaam chhod ke Kalkatte jaa raha hai apne parivaar ke saath, tou uska saara hisaab dekh lena aik baari," he said, handing a ledger to Batuk.

"Yeah… okay Kaka, mien dekhta hun…" Batuk said, eagerly taking the ledger, hoping that the familiar rhythm of the accounting work would prove to be a welcome distraction from worrying over Mallika. But that plan didn't work out either.

He was unable to focus on the figures in front of him because they were even reminding him of her, much to his absolute distress!

Squirming in his chair, he shook his head to clear it when he heard a very familiar, very beautiful voice calling out hesitantly,

"Namaste Jee!"

Batuk recognised the voice immediately but didn't dare to look up.

Bloody Hell! Matlab pehle bas uske khayal aa rahe thay, mager ab uski awaaz sunayi de rahi mujhe! Damn it, Batuk! Woh bhala yahan kaise aasakty hai… Focus on your work!

He continued looking down, as he vaguely registered Bondita getting up and rushing towards the doorway, and the rest of the family also rose in surprise. Kaka's loud voice boomed out, "Tum… Tum yahan kya ker rahi hou!"

"Woh… Woh Jee mien…" Batuk heard her stuttering nervously. He still hadn't dared to look up… dwindling between a state of reality and fantasy… belief and disbelief!

That was when another voice interjected,

"Mallika ko miene bulaya hai Kaka Sasurjee…" Bondita answered.

Mallika

Bondita ne bulaya?

Mallika sach mien yahan hai?

Yeh mera bharam nahi hai???

He still couldn't believe it! He felt as if his heart was caught in his throat!

His thoughts were interrupted as he heard Bondita's voice again,

"Kaka sasur jee, asal mien Pati babu aur mien chahte thay ke Rudhir aur Aaradhya ke Mukhe Bhaat samaroh mein Mallika bhi shaamil hou."

Since the babies' Namkaran ceremony had been held privately, all the elders had demanded that the Mukhe Bhaat, the ceremony to initiate the babies to solid food, be a grand affair. Anirudh and Bondita had agreed, and the preparations for the ceremony were going on in full swing.

Bondita’s words made Batuk finally look up, still unsure…hoping beyond hopes that this wasn’t a dream, or worse, Boudi’s idea of a prank.

As he looked towards the door, his eyes took in the recognisable feminine figure in a lovely white and purple salwar kameez, standing hand in hand with Bondita.

Batuk stood up and blinked once, twice, thrice, still not convinced that she was truly here, and not some figment of his imagination. Finally, his eyes rested on her face, on her hesitant smile and at last on her eyes, which locked with his own.

At that very moment, Batuk felt the world stop. There was no movement - not even his breath, not even his heartbeats! Suddenly… there were only 2 people in the room, in the entire world… Him and Her…

Batuk and his Mallika…

Mallika and her Batuk…

After what seemed like an eternity, his heart that had stopped suddenly started thudding loudly in his chest. And within the next heartbeat, it was joined by another equally loud thudding heart… perfectly in sync…

With a start, Batuk realised that this was his heart… and hers… Both hearts were reaching out to each other, their heartbeats getting uncontrolled… together… communicating with each other, before their minds caught up.

The one half of his heart had found its perfect mate… its other half!

Batuk felt as if he could spend an eternity just standing there with her… their eyes and hearts locked together…

If this was a fantasy, he never wanted to stop living in it!

If this was a dream… he never wanted to wake up.

He didn't know how long he drank in her presence… staring at her… living her!

But his feverish reverie was interrupted when someone pinched his arm hard. Yelping loudly, he looked in the direction to see his smirking Boudi, who was now back at his side.

"Sapna nahi dekh rahe hou… Jis insan ka abhi hum dono intizaar ker rahay thay na… woh aagayee hai. "

And then lowering her voice to a mere whisper just for his ears to hear, she said,

"Tumhari Mallika Sach mein aayi hai Batuk… Abh apna muh bannd kerou aur aise ghoorna bhi bannd kerou… aur jao… milo usey."

And then she added teasingly watching waves after waves of changing emotions in his eyes,

"Arey buddhu, agar abhi bhi bharosa nahi hou raha, tou aik aur baar chimti le sakti hun mien."

Needing no further confirmation, Batuk nearly sprinted to where Mallika was standing, his smile widening with every step he took, only to skid to a stop a few steps away from her, suddenly at a loss as to what exactly to do… what exactly to say.

You should start by greeting her, a wry voice spoke up in his head.

Greet her? He thought with a smile. Okay, but HOW?

A conventional greeting was no good, it seemed a bit too less for expressing what he felt… There was a large part of him, the part that had been craving her for so long, that wanted him to grab her and kiss her senseless.

Uhhh… But woh sab ke samnay nahi hoskta na?

His almost non-existent voice of reason tried to stop him from doing exactly that!

Trying to think, he felt that a much larger part of his being wanted to hug her tightly, tell her how much he missed her, and then never let her go.

Ummm… Well… A hug is better than a kiss in front of an entire audience… but jaise tumhare emotions ho rakhay hain… Are you sure the hug won't turn into anything more intimate?

Forget others, what if you intimidate Mallika?

The voice of reason again tried to put some sense in him.

Confused, he was unable to make up his mind about how to greet her properly!

And all the while, he couldn't stop himself from looking at her.

His eyes took in the changes that the past few months had wrought in her.

She had put on some weight and looked perfect, probably because of all the ghar ka khaana.

Another thing that he noticed was that her dressing style had changed too. He remembered her wearing Salwar Kameez and saris at festivals and whenever she felt a bit too homesick before.

But this dress was… different, a bit more formal, making her look more mature.

He had seen her wear mostly very chic, sexy outfits. He knew she used to try to look more appealing to his eyes only back then. But seeing her in a formal looking elegant Salwar suit today made him feel…strange.

Kia Mallika mujhse itni duur ho chuki hai ki usne apni dressing style hi change ker li? Kia woh sab jo woh mere liye kerty thy, woh uski style nahi thy? Is this her comfort zone… aur meri wajeh se kia pehle woh uncomfortable hoty thy?

He wondered sadly. He didn't know why the change in her dressing style was making him feel guilty!!!

But that wasn't the change that shocked him the most.

The biggest change that he noticed was in her expression - she didn't have that brash confidence today, the confidence that had led her to hug him tightly in front of all the family and openly introduce herself as his girlfriend when previously she had visited Tulsipur.

Today, instead, she looked hesitant, uncertain, as if questioning her decision to come to Tulsipur.

Well, you can't blame her! His inner voice taunted. She wasn't exactly welcomed the last time, was she?

That was enough to pour an ice-cold bucket of water on his happy mood, as he was suddenly overcome with guilt and shame.

It is my fault! He thought sadly. The last time, she came here, she was banking on ME! But I… I didn't even tell her how happy I was to see her! And the family, Kaka, Som Dada, Sampoorna Ma… they…. they didn't warm up to her either, and I didn't help. I was so consumed with my grand plan for revenge that I saw her as a hindrance. I tried my best to push her away, to send her back. No wonder she is so scared this time.

He clenched his eyes shut, trying to block out all the terrible memories of that time, wondering if he would ever be able to right all the wrongs he had committed, or if he would have to live with the consequences for the rest of his life.

His guilty recriminations were halted by someone clearing their throat, reminding him that the majority of the family was present in the hall, and were probably awaiting some sort of explanation.

Tapur confirmed his assessment by asking with a small, conspiratorial smile, "Batuk Babu, aap dono ki aankhon hi aankhon mein baatein tou chalti hi rahengi, mager inhe aise hi darwaze me khade rakhne ka iraada hai kya aapka? Inhe ander aane dein, thodi khatirdari kerein, aur humse bhi milwayein?"

Batuk felt a bit of his guilt ebb as his little sister just gave him a way to atone for his past behaviour.

"Haan Batuk…" Anirudh added, as he entered the living room properly to stand beside his wife, who had a permanent playful wide smile plastered on her face, "Aakhir humein bhi milna hai tumhari sabse khaas Mallika se."

Batuk felt his cheeks flame up as he looked at Mallika desperately, hoping that she would understand Big D's blatant revelation, and not think that Batuk was getting too ahead of himself. She too had turned to him with widened eyes and reddened cheeks. He tried to gauge her reaction.

Amidst the clear shock and disbelief, he could see how her eyes played a hopeful expression laced with fear. She was too apprehensive to be hopeful even, he realized.

But the hope that what Big D had claimed was true, that he truly did consider that she was special for Batuk… That hope was not ebbing away completely despite all her attempts.

And Batuk saw all that!

He felt so connected to her that he could actually feel all her feelings and emotions!

A beautiful smile bloomed on Batuk's face on realizing that his Mallika had not completely gone too far from him after all. He also realized that instead of gaping at her like a lovesick boy, he should probably go ahead and make her comfortable.

Still smiling, he went ahead with his plan now. Slowly taking her hand, he led her into the family fold.

It will be different this time. He vowed to himself.

This time the whole world would know how special she was to him, irrespective of their current relationship status. And this time she would be given a welcome that was as special as she was.

With that promise to himself, he went ahead with properly introducing her to his family members.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

29th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 12:00 PM

Mallika couldn't keep the confusion off her face as Batuk led her up the steps of the Haveli, carrying her suitcase in one hand while the other hand clasped her own.

When Bondita had invited her for the twins' Mukhe Bhaat, Mallika had been sceptical about accepting the invitation. After all, memories of her last visit to Tulsipur were not exactly pleasant. Most of the family members disapproved of her, Batuk too hadn't seemed exactly thrilled to see her. Bondita had quickly become a friend, but Mallika had ruined that as well. In fact, she had been surprised that Bondita chose to invite her in the first place after what she had done. The wise thing to do would be to excuse herself, but somewhere deep down, a voice in her heart urged her to accept. So she had swallowed her misgivings and come to the haveli again.

Only to be pleasantly surprised, and also a little confused.

Well, the initial welcome was as expected. Batuk’s Kaka clearly hadn’t gotten over his dislike for her, Bondita was extremely welcoming, and Batuk himself seemed like he was trying to ignore her presence. All this had only added to her nervousness, right until the moment that he looked up at her, and their eyes locked.

The way Batuk's eyes got lost in hers, the way she could read his heart in his beautiful hazel eyes - THAT made her tremble with a desire and love so strong that it was hard to stop herself from rushing to him and melting within him! She could hear her erratic heartbeats syncing with his thundering heart... and that shook her to the core.

Her heart thudded maddeningly when she saw him approaching her… and she felt as if she would collapse out of her second by second increasing nervousness. Their mental conversation continued since both of them were at a loss for words. She could read multiple emotions in his eyes, nervousness, confusion, guilt, but above all, she could make out that he was happy to see her here, that he too had missed her, as much as she had. And this had reduced her trepidation more than any reassurances.

However, the minute he held her hand, her wildly erratic heartbeats suddenly quietened down. A deep sense of peace, relief and ecstasy washed over her…

It was surreal…

The mere touch of his assuring grasp made her feel heady with emotion. She felt as if she was floating!

There was a sense of euphoria…

His touch, his proximity, his eyes sending millions of messages to her… everything felt unreal… and then, it all felt just a little too real!

Extremely confused by her emotions, she managed to look at him closely. And there, she saw peace settling within the deep pools of his eyes too. She could swear that he also felt all the things that she just did!

It felt truly remarkable how connected they both were… especially at that moment! This was a connection that she had never felt before, even when they had been intimate in all possible ways.

While it was hard to process all these extremely complex feelings, there was another surprise for her. And that was when she met his family members.

The last time, Batuk had seemed completely opposed to the idea of her interacting with the family in any way. She knew that it had been because his entire drama would be exposed. But at that time, her insecurities had led her to fear that it could be because he didn't want her around, or worse, he didn't consider her worthy enough of meeting the family he loved so much.

These insecurities, which were exacerbated by the obvious disapproval of his uncle, brother, and stepmother, caused Mallika to refrain from making any overt attempts at bonding with any of them.

This time, however, Batuk didn’t blanch from having to introduce her to his family. Instead, he had personally introduced her to every single family member. He seemed enthusiastic… and determined, proudly presenting her as his sabse khaas dost, praising her to the skies, almost as if he was showing her off. His sheer enthusiasm made her feel cherished… and… loved?

Nahi nahi… don't hope… don't hope… She admonished herself, Don't ruin everything again by being too clingy.

However, his enthusiasm had seemingly spilt over to the rest of the family. His happiness was so palpable and infectious that everyone was smiling warmly at seeing him like that with her.

Shayad isiliye, they were so welcoming this time, she thought wryly.

Apart from Kaka, all the other members of the family had been extremely quick at making her feel at home. Bondita's Thakuma and Maa had immediately welcomed her with warm blessings, Tapur and Tupur had taken her to their hearts and had managed to become friends over a 15-minute conversation. Batuk's father too had been extremely forthcoming with his own words of welcome, soon peppering her with questions about her studies and her life in both Italy and Delhi. Sampoorna Jee had been a surprise. In sharp contrast to the frigid courtesy displayed last time, this time she was being extremely sweet, embracing her lovingly and declaring that she can address her as Sampoorna Maa, just like Batuk did. A suspicious Mallika had wondered about this sudden change in behaviour until she spotted the guilt lurking in Sampoorna Maa's eyes.

So she was trying to make up for something. Maybe for her prior coldness?

However, the one person that she had been the most nervous about meeting was the man Batuk presented her to at the very end.

His Big D. Anirudh Dada.

Though Mallika had never met or even spoken to Anirudh before, he had become a part of her life. She had always known how important he was to Batuk, and hearing Batuk and Bondita's stories about him had only increased her own admiration and respect for this beautiful man, and a part of her had started craving for his approval.

And then you ended up wronging him so badly, her conscience taunted her. You were going to kill his unborn children! Would he ever approve of that? Or you?

When finally she was standing in front of him, her guilt made her unable to meet his eyes for quite a while. It was only when Batuk silently encouraged her by squeezing her hand, that she finally gathered the courage to look up at him, only to tear up again when she saw him meeting her gaze with one filled with compassion. She looked down, and had mumbled a choked apology, as tears of guilt and shame trickled down her cheeks.

During this mini-breakdown, Batuk's hand had tightened around her own, but Anirudh had remained unfazed. He simply raised his hand to her head, patting it comfortingly, and with a soft murmured "It's okay", had deftly changed the topic, engaging her in a discussion about her work at the association. Their handloom business had flourished over the past few months, and Anirudh shared how he had unsuccessfully tried to set up a similar venture some years back. By the time the debate about marketing techniques for countering social norms was halted due to the call for the morning meal, Mallika's distress had been forgotten.

While she was comfortable now thanks to Baba and Anirudh dada, Mallika couldn't help but feel shocked at the way the entire family, especially the younger members, viewed Batuk and her relationship.

Here, even Anirudh dada wasn't very helpful. In fact, he had been the one to open the can of worms by openly identifying her as Batuk's Sabse Khaas Mallika.

But that had only been the beginning.

The entire group had spent the whole time passing playful comments and had teased the two mercilessly about "how some friendships were so special that people would zone out in the thoughts of their friend even in the middle of an ongoing conversation!" And "how some people would do just about anything to make sure that their daily dosage of extremely important phone calls wasn't missed!", and "how some friends would wake up all night… waiting up for those people to call them, even when they would have to work early the next morning!"

As her cheeks reddened on hearing about how others saw her and Batuk's friendship, Tupur had solemnly informed her that these phone calls were sooooo crucial, that Batuk used to get super cranky if deprived of them.

Happy yet embarrassed, she stole a glance at Batuk… Expecting that he would blatantly refuse all those claims, yet, secretly dreading the same.

However, to her shock, she saw Batuk doing absolutely nothing to stop the teasing.

Yes, his face turned red enough to compete with a tomato. But he didn’t attempt to correct them at all, to clarify that they were “just friends."

Instead, he simply smiled widely, and then continued on, not leaving her side, or leaving her hand.

His overall behaviour had been extremely confusing to Mallika and hence she had made up her mind to confront him as soon as she got him alone.

She was lost in processing everything while Batuk walked her through familiar corridors of the haveli.

Her quietude was baffling him, though. She was so lost that Batuk had to interrupt her.

“Mallika? Are you okay?” Batuk snapped his fingers in front of her, making her realise that they had reached their destination while she had been lost in thought. She also noticed that Batuk was no longer holding her suitcase, and that they were not in front of the room that Bondita had said would be hers. Even more confused, she turned to Batuk and asked,

“Batuk, hum yahan… Yeh tou mera kamra…”

“I know… I know… Tum zaroor thak gayi hougi, and I should let you rest, mager mujhe tumhe dou aur buht zaroori logon se milana hai, and inka apna schedule hota hai… Tou, shall we?"

Mallika nodded mutely and let herself be led inside the room. The room had been set up as a play area or nursery, with all the heavy furniture pushed against the walls. Towards the centre of the room, a baby-proof playpen had been built with wooden fences. And in this pen, sat two giggling toddlers, who were busy throwing their stuffed toys at each other. Two toddlers who Mallika recognised without any introduction.

Rudhi and Aaru.

Rudhir and Aaradhya.

Batuk's nephew and niece.

Bondita and Anirudh Dada's children.

The children she had wanted gone.

The babies that SHE had tried to kill.

Until now, the twins had been more like an abstract concept for Mallika. She had always thought her crime to be against Bondita, Anirudh, and Batuk. But today, on seeing them in the flesh, her heinous act just seemed even worse.

And Batuk chahta hai yeh mujhse milein, apne killer se… No, no they shouldn't be near me! I… I don't deserve to meet them.

She felt tears prick her eyes. Guilt and shame washed over her yet again, this time much more amplified, as she turned to Batuk.

"Tum… tum mujhe yahan… mien… mien kaise… Batuk miene…" she stuttered, clinging to his arm desperately.

Batuk looked at Mallika knowingly as she struggled with her guilt. He was no stranger to this struggle, having gone through a similar torment a few months ago, when he was taken to meet them. That day, it had been the moral support of Big D and Shashu-bear that had drawn him out of the abyss of guilt. Today he was determined to do the same for his Mallika.

"Chalo na Mallika…" he said placing his free hand on hers. "Mien tumhe mere Rudhi aur Aaru se milwana chahta hu. Aur woh dono bhi jaan'na chahte hai ki woh kaun hai jo inke Super Chachu ke liye itni khaas hai."

"Mager… miene… nahi… Dada aur Bondita ko bhi achha nahi… Batuk please…"

"Big D and Boudi know ke mien tumhe yahan laya hun…" he said, raising his hand to gently wipe her tears. "Aur unhe koi problem nahi hai… na hi kisi aur ko problem hai… Haa mager ab hum jaldi se inn dono shaitanon ke paas nahi gaye na, tou inhe buht problem hogi. Aur phir yeh dono mil ker poore Tulsipur ko problem mien daal dien ge, I swear!"

His comic remark, in the end, brought a smile to her lips as she looked at him as if confirming if this really was a good idea?

Smiling, he nodded his head, subtly answering her, and earnestly said, "Chalo na Mallika…please!"

Mallika's guilt was replaced with a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for being forgiven, for being trusted, for getting a second chance, a chance to be better, to do better. Having no further excuses, she followed Batuk into the playpen, sitting down next to him as he called over the twins.

"Rudhi! Aaru! Dekho tou kaun aaya hai? Tumhare Super Chachu aur tumhari Cha… uhh…tumhare Chachu ki dost!"

On hearing his voice, both kids started rapidly crawling in their direction. However, while Rudhir immediately crawled into his Chachu's waiting arms to be lifted into his lap, Aaradhya surprised them by instead crawling towards Mallika, and then attempting to climb into her lap.

An astonished Mallika looked toward Batuk for clarification. He explained with a chuckle, "Iss maamle mein Aaru apni Mamma pe gayi hai, naye logon se friendship kerna achha lagta hai usko, come on, pick her up…"

Mallika too gingerly lifted a curious Aaradhya into her lap, only to be further surprised when Aaradhya silently curled up against her chest, gripping Mallika's kameez in her tiny fist.

All her apprehensions crumbling away, a smile bloomed on her face as Mallika enveloped the little one in her arms as well. She felt her guilt completely ebb away as she drew comfort from the little baby in her lap.

As Batuk fondly watched them cuddle, a sudden memory flashed through his mind.

"Patibabu, jab Batuk wapis aa jaayega na, tab hum uski aur Mallika ki shaadi kerwa denge! Sochiye na, humare bacche ko uske Chachu-Chachi milenge. Kitna maza aaega na?"

He had waved Bondita off that day, but now, realising the extremely domestic position that they were in, Batuk was overcome with a feeling of wistfulness.

Ager mien apne hatred mein, apne revenge plan mein itna engrossed nahi hota tou Boudi ki baat aaj sach hou sakti thy. But now, even though she considers me her friend, I have pushed her away so badly, ke woh kabhi shayad mujhe trust na ker sakay as a romantic partner. And all I can do is pretend for some time, ke waqai aisa hi hota tou kitna accha hota.

Batuk's self-recriminations were cut short when he heard Mallika let out a soft yelp. He looked at her to discover that Aaradhya had found Mallika's loose hair fascinating and had decided to grab them. Mallika was wincing as she tried to free them from her tiny fist while still trying to hold her securely in her lap.

He immediately deposited Rudhir to sit on the floor, giving him his favourite toy, before leaning towards Mallika and attempting to free her hair from Aaradhya. After several minutes of coaxing, all her hair was free, and as if it was completely natural, tucking her hair lovingly behind her ear, he leaned closer as he told his naughty niece,

"Aaru… don't hurt her na please! Mallika ko pain horhy thy na aap ke aise kerne se. Aur Mallika ko pain hogy tou Chachu ko bhi hogy na!"

As Aaru gurgled in her baby language while settling to hold the dangling buttons on Mallika's shirt, without realizing how close he was to her, Batuk dipped his head lower to plant a soft kiss on Aaru's fist.

Mallika's heartbeats accelerated while she fascinatedly watched the man completely turning into a marshmallow for his niece.

Her breathing quickened as she felt his head near her chest, where Aaradhya was holding her buttons.

She inhaled sharply as she saw him kissing Aaradhya's little hand.

And that was when he looked up at Mallika, his eyes holding an intensity that could pulverize boulders!

Their eyes locked yet again, their faces inches apart as both stopped breathing.

And the world stopped once again.

Bondita smiled to herself as she watched Batuk and Mallika have a little moment to themselves. It had only been half a day since Mallika had arrived, but it was evident that these two were not going to let go of each other now. Their craving for one another was completely apparent, and everyone at home knew that these two are inseparable now!

Mission Bhanwra and Titli Milan ka first step is a success! she thought happily. Ab mujhe kuch aur kerne ki zarurat nahi hai. Yeh dono jis terah aik doosre ki oar badh rahe hai, ab yeh apni manzil aik sath dhoond lien ge… aur uss tak khud hi pahuch jaaenge.

Nice chapter ❤❤

How Batuk and Bon tease each other is so much fun 😄

Tupur wanting to talk to SD before marriage is so good. Nice to see her taking decisions for herself other than blindly following someone's words ❤

Good that Nakli doctor went away.

Khoye khoye Monkey!! 😂😂

Thank you for tamatar Monkey 🤗😘

Mallika meeting Ani was emotional with her guilt and his compassion ❤

Family members are trying to give all kinds of hints but Monkey and Titli are busy in perfecting '"just friends" role play 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Monkey's slip, almost Chachi! 🤣🤣

Loved Mallika meeting the twins part the most ❤❤❤It is like a reflection of how Batuk had met them. Loved the way Batuk supported her to come out of her guilt. Sweet Monkey ❤❤

And loved the way he introduced the twins, "mere Rudi aur Aaru" ❤❤

P. S. You sent Nakli doctor to Mussoorie! Such a beautiful place!! 🥺🥺

You should've sent him to Sahara desert 😡😡

Chapter 25.1: Four Steps to your Heart

A/N:

Hello friends! First of all, extremely sorry for such a late update. First, it was Ramadan, then a crazy work routine, then Eid, then some more work, a new Korean show, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that all added up and delayed our write-up.

But we are very thankful to all of you who waited so patiently.

So, for you guys, we have written an extremely long (ass) chapter 😛

We will post it in two parts.

Consider it as a delayed Eid gift from us 😁

However, the chapter is very MATURE and the reader's discretion is STRONGLY ADVISED.

A fair warning, it's an 18+ chapter, especially part 2. So please, tread carefully 😛

Also, another fair warning! The mature scene is NOT between our Rudhi 😛

So those who were waiting for a scene between them, we apologize in advance.

But we hope that you will like what you read.

Please let us know your views through your comments and votes.

Love you all,

Ashley & Ayesha

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

29th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 10:00 pm

It was 10:00 pm. At this time Batuk would normally be on the phone with Mallika, but like last night, there would be no phone call coming.

Unlike yesterday, however, he knew why.

It was because she wasn't in Delhi. She was here, in Tulsipur, in the room right opposite his own.

He was sprawled on his bed, fiddling with the locket in his hands, as his inner voices were debating what exactly to do in the situation.

"Well, there is nothing to think about here, woh yahan hai, you want to speak to her, tou go speak to her." One voice declared.

"Is that wise?" His voice of reason asked. "I mean, just earlier today you almost lost control. Naah, wait for tomorrow, you can speak to her then. And for heaven's sake- Don’t be alone with her!"

No matter how much he tried to focus on other things, Batuk found himself drifting to the moment they shared earlier that day in the playroom.

The moment when he realized just how close he was to her.

The moment when their eyes locked, and the world stopped.

He didn't know what he would have done if Rudhir had not realized that his Chachu was ignoring him and made his displeasure known. Very very loudly.

Just thinking about that moment made him feel warm all over.

"See?" His sane mind pointed out again. "You would have definitely gotten carried away. And who knows how Mallika would have reacted."

A small, hopeful voice from his heart interjected,

"Why would she have reacted badly? Miene feel kiya! She was caught up in the moment too!"

His voice of sanity and reason rejected the hopeful thought promptly,

"Was she? Mager phir usne unn hints pe kyun nahi react kiya. Na tumhare hints pe, na gharwalo ke teasing pe. Meri maano, don't go there. Tum usko intimidate kerouge."

The hopeful heart was not ready to back down though as he reasoned,

"She did react! She blushed, she smiled, she was hoping tum confirm kerouge unhe! You saw that! So stop overthinking and GO!!"

Batuk desperately buried his head in his pillow, hoping that this would stop the voices in his head.

Bloody Hell! He thought. Miene Mallika ko approach kerne se pehle itna kabhi nahi socha! Not since that shopping trip four years ago!

The thought of that shopping trip sent an already forlorn and anxious Batuk down the memory lane.

Batuk stared down at his shoes in confusion. He didn't know the exact reason as to why he had been pacing outside the University Girl's Hostel for the past half an hour, thinking about an excuse to approach a girl he had just met once. He didn't even know why there was the urge to meet her in the first place! After all, BRC didn't chase girls, THEY chased HIM! Yet, he was here - despite every rational thought in his head telling him to walk away - and still thinking of an excuse to meet her, to talk to her.

"Hello, Jee! Tum idhar kya ker rahe hou? Kisi se milna tha?" a voice interrupted his thoughts. He looked up, smiling to see that it was the girl he wanted to approach - Mallika.

"Haan woh mein tumse hi…" he almost blurted out, before checking himself. "I mean… Umm… Tum… Are you going somewhere?" he finally asked, effectively changing the subject, he gestured to the handbag she was carrying.

"Haan na! Woh kya hai na, mere paas zyada western kapde nahi hai, aur aise kapde pehnun…" she pointed to her blue Salwar Suit, "tou log ghoorte hai ajeeb tarah se… Isiliye jee, shopping jaa rahi thi."

"Ohh…" he said with disappointment. He had hoped to spend time with her. To get to know her better. After all, she had been occupying his thoughts since the mixer last night. He looked around desperately, searching for an excuse to prolong the conversation. Finally, he noticed something.

"Umm… tum akele jaa rahi hou? He asked her. “Matlab normally log shopping kerne kisi friend ya family member ke saath jaate hai na? Taaki woh tumhe choose kerne mein help ker sake? Tumhare friends directly market mein milenge?"

His words brought a shadow on her face that she quickly tried to erase. Infusing all the positivity that she could muster, she said brightly,

"Woh kya hai na… Mera ab tak koi dost nahi bana… Abhi abhi aayi hun na… Aur phir yahan pe sab kuch thoda alag alag sa hai… Tou time lagega… Well…" she shrugged her shoulders. "Aik baar yahan ke culture me thoda ghulne lagungi, tou dost ban'ne hi hai… Tab tak akele hi… "

The matter-of-fact way that Mallika confessed to her lack of friends made Batuk feel multiple emotions at once. Although she had tried to mask it all, Batuk had felt a pang in his heart.

A part of him admired her optimism, her confidence that it would change with time.

Another part, the 12-year-old boy who was once in the same situation, empathized. And finally, for some inexplicable reason, there was a part of him that wanted her to not be sad. He wanted her to be smiling and happy, not lonely and wistful. He quickly came to a decision.

“Okay then, let’s go!” he said, as he looped her arm around his own and started dragging her in the direction of the market.

“Arey, arey arey…” She exclaimed, “Kahan le ja rahe ho mujhe Jee?”

“Tumhe shopping jaana tha na?”

“Haan mager… Tum?”

“Well, normally shopping trips pe friends saath jaate hai na? And hum friends hai, tou… ”

“Hum friends hai? Really Jee?”, she asked, touched. He simply nodded in response.

“Okay… Thank you…” She said, letting him lead her. After a few minutes, however, she chirped up again. “Don’t mind haan, but tum meri clothes select kerne mein help… I mean…” she trailed off, gesturing to his wild hairstyle, suspenders almost falling off and ratty shirt.

Batuk didn't know what to quite feel right then. Should he be offended by the clear insult to his style sense, or pleased that she considered him close enough to mock him like this?

“Oh hello!” He indignantly exclaimed. “Mera style sense buht awesome hai! Dekhna tum, you will like everything I pick out!”

She DID like everything he picked out. Batuk thought with a smile. Mallika's outfits over the next few years in Italy, and even after returning to India were of similar styles to what Batuk had chosen for her.

Until now…

When Mallika joined them after a nap and a shower, she was wearing the same blue Salwar Suit that she had worn on the day of the shopping trip.

This sudden realization made Batuk go back to his thoughts from the morning regarding the change in Mallika's dressing.

Kya waqai yeh uski style nahi thy? Kya miene usey force kiya aise kapde pehen'ne mein jo usko pasand nahi? Kya “Original Mallika '' waise hi kapde pehen'na chahty hai jaise aaj pehene thay? Aur… aur kya aisi aur koi baat hai? Jo mujhe uske baare mein pata hi nahi?

The questions continued to overwhelm him until he only had one solution left for his dilemma.

No… he decided, as he stood up, the locket still clenched in his hands.

I need to find out, she… I have to ask her… Mallika kabhi bhi mere wajah se apni identity nahi lose ker sakty… I… I should go to her now…

He stalked out of the room like a man on a mission. His eyes were focused not on the corridor or the door, but on Mallika, who he knew was inside, and the questions on his mind. As a result, he didn't even realize that Bondita had just exited the room until he heavily collided with her.

"Uff!... Batuk ke bacchay! Dekh ke nahi chal sakte?" She muttered with irritation, before suddenly realizing where Batuk was headed to. "Aur waise? Itni raat ko aik jawaan ladki ke kamre ke bahar kyun mandra rahe hou? Acchhe ghar ke ladkon ko shobha deta hai aisa kerna?"

Batuk's face turned red, and he stuttered,

"Umm… Boudi… Woh I…"

Noticing his heightened complexion, Bondita stifled the laughter that had been bubbling inside her since morning. Anirudh and her had noticed how the bhanwra and titli were being with each other.

Well, actually everyone in the family had noticed, and all of them had secretly enjoyed their clumsy and futile efforts to hide their feelings too!

And then, she was Bondita…Batuk's boudi. How could she miss a chance to pull his leg?

Biting her lips to stop herself from laughing, with a perfect poker face, she said,

"Arey… yeh tou Mallika ka locket hai na? Lautane jaa rahe hou? Abhi iss waqt…itni jaldi kia hai? Arey, mera matlab hai kal lauta dete…"

Batuk's complexion turned redder as he mumbled,

"Boudi… woh mujhe ussey kuch baat bhi kerni thy…"

Bondita was having a blast!!

Still stifling her laughter, she teasingly said,

"Ooooh… Ab samjhi… Woh tumhari Sabse khaas dost hai na… tou yeh puchhne ja rahe houge ke woh comfortable hai na, ya usey kisi cheez ki zarurat tou nahi hai na? Arey tum chinta mat kerou, miene abhi sab check kar liya hai… sab theek hai… Aur…” she rose on her toes to whisper in his ear. “Shower bhi sahi se chal raha hai… usey repair ki koi zarurat nahi hai.”

The last remark turned Batuk the deepest shade of red. It was a bold reminder of his rendezvous with Mallika in her shower a few months ago.

He had been pretending to be Anirudh back then and Bondita had almost caught him making out with Mallika at that time. It could have been quite scandalous if Bondita did not blindly trust her "Pati Babu” and had believed the feeble excuse of the shower being broken!

The reminder of that incident made him feel like laughing while still getting flustered as he exclaimed,

“Boudiiiiiiiiii”

And then, thinking it was best to avoid going to Mallika's room, after all, keeping the locket in his chest pocket, he sighed and said resignedly, “You know… I am just… I am going to sleep now…” he turned back to his own room, only to be stopped by Bondita grabbing his arm.

“Arey buddhu, mazak ker rahi thy mien… Jao, milo usko… Woh jagi hui hai… Aur haan, mujhe lagta hai woh tumhara hi intezaar ker rahi hai…” Bondita told him with a broad smile lurking around the corners of her lips and a teasing, meaningful look in her eyes.

Forgetting all his earlier dilemma, he blurted hopefully, “Really Boudi? Tumhe sach mein aisa lagta hai?”

This time, Bondita smiled warmly. Tapping his shoulder encouragingly, she said “Really… Ab jao tumhari Mallika ke paas… Bas dhyaan rahe ke Kakasasurjee ko pata na chalein… Tum jaante ho na unhe… Fizool mein Mallika ko hi galat samjhenge…”

Batuk felt as if Bondita had handed him the entire universe!

“I know Boudi… I will be careful… And Boudi…” he suddenly grabbed her in a bear hug and quietly exclaimed. “Thank you thank you thank you!!” before releasing her and running to knock on Mallika’s door.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She had been feeling restless since the clock had chimed 10 PM. It was the time when she used to talk to Batuk daily on the phone.

Their telephonic conversation had become something of an addiction… a need, precisely. Where, like an addict, she started to crave hearing his voice…

It used to make her feel close to him.

The telephone was somewhat a blessing for her as it used to bridge the gap between him and her.

However, the difference tonight was that she was not in some other home, some other city. Instead, she was in the same haveli where Batuk was.

And that was making her feel giddy.

The whole day they had been together. But with everyone else around, they hadn't gotten any alone moments with each other.

She blushed as she recalled that one instance in Rudhi and Aaru's playpen where Batuk and her had almost lost their control.

They had been awkwardly interrupted by Rudhir. And although she felt disappointment in her heart, her mind had thanked that little Don for his timely intrusion.

Ager kiss hojata tou? Mien apne aap ko roak nahi paaty. Batuk ki nazrien… poora din jaise woh mujhe dekhta raha, mien kaise khud per control ker paaty? Ager woh kiss kerta tou mien definitely respond ker dety. Aur phir wahi hota… Usko lagta ke yeh wahi purani Mallika hai… jiski koi self respect nahi thy. Usko lagta ki… mien wahi desperate insecure girlfriend hun jo uski attention ke liye kuch bhi ker sakty thy. Aur phir woh mujhse phir se chidd jata…

A wave of depression settled in her heart as the memories of how she used to go out of her comfort zone, out of her way for him… just so that Batuk stayed true to her!

Sighing, she recalled how they had become intimate for the first time.

After a period of friendship and occasional make-out sessions, Batuk had gone and had his way with another girl at the university.

When Mallika had found out, she had felt cheated.

Although they hadn't reached the phase where they had declared to be each other's lovers; however, she had accepted him as her boyfriend in her heart. And when Batuk kissed another girl, Mallika genuinely felt as if he had cheated on her with someone else.

They had a crazy fight. For two long months, they stayed apart from each other.

Each day had been hell for Mallika…

She understood that her feelings for Batuk were very irrational… and already very deep.

Apparently, the two months being apart from Mallika had not been easy on Batuk too. Because eventually, he was the one who had broken the ice and tried to make up with Mallika, sneaking into her hostel room to do so.

And the naive girl that she was, her heart was overjoyed as she believed that Batuk had "returned to her'' and she had to do everything and anything to keep him bound to herself.

During the makeup, they had lost control and all the pent-up desire that they had felt for each other had flooded. They ended up having sex for the first time.

For Mallika, giving her to him, body and soul meant everything.

It meant that he was her everything.

But for Batuk, exclusivity was a completely alien concept. The second he felt that his feelings were getting deeper for her, he would cheat on her to break the cycle.

And, all of this tug of war of emotions from both ends resulted in them getting caught up in a toxic loop. She would try to bind him to herself, while he would entertain her and then go feast on others also. Then they would fight, make up, and repeat everything again!

With time, Mallika had become more and more insecure. When she came to Tulsipur in his pursuit, even then she tried to do everything that could make him return to her eventually.

Even if it was just for sex.

She wanted him to need her as desperately as she used to feel for him.

And so, even at the cost of blackmail, she had managed to make him come to her room every night even when he was pretending to be Anirudh.

But… all of that was futile.

She realized her folly later.

You cannot bind human beings to yourself forever through coercion and manipulation.

Later when Batuk had called her from the hospital and they resumed their friendship, she strictly told her heart to never ever go ahead of itself. To never manipulate Batuk into anything.

And so, she had pledged to become his sab se acchi dost only.

Jo woh chahay… jaise chahay. Mien uski dost reh ker bhi tou khush hoskty hun na?

She had made herself understand this.

But for the past few months, things had started changing between them again.

Out of nowhere, Batuk would say something on the phone that would make her heartbeats fast again.

She used to reprimand herself for reading too much into his meaningful remarks. And although her heart would start tugging her toward Batuk again, she would deliberately try to shut it up and focus on her mind that kept reminding her of her earlier resolutions.

However, all her firm resolve had come down to zero today.

She wasn't able to stop herself from falling into the magnetism that he exuded.

She wasn't able to stop the awakening of forbidden desires that she had buried in her heart and had locked away!

And as if this was all not enough, the 10 o'clock circadian rhythm had started making her extremely restless too. She wanted to talk to him… but…

Pata nahi woh kia ker rha hoga? Aik hi ghar mien hote hue call bhi tou nahi hoskty…

Kia kerun… kaise samjhaon apne dil ko ki…

Mallika… you have to control yourself! Batuk is … confused. Deep down he's just expecting honest friendship from you hi. So, just focus on that. Stop dreaming as if something else is going on in his mind.

Even…

If there is something else going on between us…

I have to control myself. I cannot … Ager Batuk ne mujhe ghalat samjha tou?

I will lose his friendship too…

Ohh, man!!!

Please, God!!!

Help me!

Her sadness at her inability to keep her emotions in check in front of Batuk was amplified by the true state of misery her heart felt.

She had gone and taken a bath to clear her head and make herself relaxed.

As she had come out of the bathroom, she was clad in a knee-length powder pink silk nightie. Her hair was wet and she was trying to dry it when Bondita arrived to check on her.

As she left, Mallika stole a glance at the telephone set by her bedside table.

Quickly shaking her head to admonish herself for even hoping childishly to hear his voice on the phone, she focussed all her attention back on her hair.

Rolling them in a white towel, she then sat by the dressing table and took out the skin cream that she had brought with her luggage.

It was her night ritual to pamper herself with her favourite Italian floral-scented cream.

As she got busy with her nightly routine, she heard a knock at her door.

Assuming that Bondita had returned with something else to say, she just called out,

"Come in."

She had bent down to apply the cream lavishly on her long, exposed legs.

And so, her heart stopped the minute she straightened up and saw the reflection of the handsome man in the mirror who was standing behind her.

Their eyes met in the mirror, and she didn't know why the solemn way he was gazing at her made her insides warm… and liquid.

For Batuk, it was like looking at a beautiful goddess… The woman of his dreams.

When he had entered the room, he thought that she would still be clad in her modest shalwar kameez.

However, watching her in a short pink nightie, with hair covered in a towel and her skin flushed with her hot water bath earlier, his heart had missed millions of beats in a second.

Her innate grace and the sensuality she exuded without even trying was, for some unknown reason, very soothing to his raw nerves and fragile self-control!

Instead of wanting to jump at her to kiss her senseless, he rather felt as if he was caught in a daze.

The way that she had been shocked to see him… her innocence… and her beauty were like a mind-numbing drug to him!.

He wanted this moment to freeze.

He wanted to continue looking at her…

A part of him was relieved to see her choice of clothing. If she was shocked to see him there, it meant that she wasn't expecting him to come.

If that was the case, and still she wore a sexy little nightie, it meant that she was not doing anything for him.

And… surprisingly… this realization brought a joy to his heart that he had not expected at all!

As he smiled warmly at her reflection, she slowly put the cream back on the dressing table and rose from the chair.

Turning to face him, she tried to control her heart that had started galloping in her chest cavity.

Clearing her throat, she looked into his eyes and asked cautiously,

"Batuk… tum yahan? I wasn't expecting you jee… Mujhe laga Bondita…"

He noticed her nervousness, and it surprised him again. He was familiar with a very bold Mallika. But this blushing, shy and nervous Mallika was evoking many other feelings within his soul.

Trying to ease her into the conversation, smiling playfully, he asked her teasingly,

"Kyun Mallika jee? Roaz 10 bajay ke baad aap Bondita se baat kerty thyn kia?"

As her eyes widened on hearing such an unexpected reply, he chuckled and teased some more,

"Tulsipur aatay hi MUJHE bhool gai ho? Abh bass Bondita hi chahiye tumko?"

She was so shocked that she didn't even process what she was saying as she exclaimed,

"Nahi nahi… mien tou tumhara hi wait…"

Realizing what she had revealed, she bit her lip and flushed.

Batuk's smile had widened from one ear to another as he just teasingly added,

"Ahan!"

Trying to pull herself together, she took a deep breath, and said cautiously,

"I mean… Mien yehi soch rhy thy ki tum call kerna chaho ge kia… but then I realized how stupid I was being… Bhala aik hi ghar mien bilkul aamnay samnay ke rooms mien hote hue call kaise hoskta hai?" She let out a nervous giggle as she continued, "Phir… mien bas… I mean… I was wondering ki… umm… tum shayad abh subha hi milna chaho ge mujhse."

His gaze had turned meaningful and knowing, and that was more flustering.

Apart from the playfulness that he had exuded, she didn't want to appear as a wanton, attention-seeker friend once again.

The thought that she had vowed to keep her emotions in check made her a little sad once again.

He noticed the range of emotions running across her expressive face. And surprisingly, he felt her sadness.

Her feelings were affecting him too. He felt his heart getting hurt on seeing her like that. And so, to cheer her up again, he jokingly remarked,

"I was shocked to see you in this nightie, you know?"

When she looked up into his eyes, confused, he smiled and said,

"Bhayee… mien tou soch rha tha ke tum apne wahi silly pyjama aur baggy si shirt mien milo gy. After all, that's your favourite attire na?"

Mallika's eyes widened again. She knew what he was referring to!

Back in Italy, during one semester break when she caught the flu and periods simultaneously, she became very lazy. She owned a pair of very comfortable pyjamas. During her period of sickness, she didn't change her pyjama tees for two days straight, wearing them day and night! The supposed night dress no longer remained exclusive for nights!

That was the time when she had just started seeing Batuk.

He used to visit her to get her medicines, soup, and one thing or the other. Although the environment wasn't so liberal, he still managed to go to her somehow. And on the 2nd night in a row when he saw her in the same ganda sa huliya, he couldn't stop himself from laughing at her.

When he made fun of her, that was what finally prompted her to take a bath and change her clothes.

After that, this had become a ritual. Normal nights when she would go to Batuk's place, she would wear perfectly sensuous yet comfortable stuff that he loved too.

But when she would fall sick, she would seek some strange kind of refuge and solace in her torn, ragged pyjamas and tees that Batuk hated.

She even took some of Batuk's used and ready-to-throw-away- tee shirts, much to his ire.

He didn't know why, seeing her in his shirts used to make him feel very strange, very intimate emotions- something that he actively tried to avoid confronting back then.

He never stopped her, but he always showed how he preferred her in anything but those silly torn pyjamas and shirts!

Hence, when Mallika got deeply involved with him, she herself stopped wearing all those things that would make her even slightly unappealing to his eyes.

Now, after such a long time, hearing him mention those wretched but extremely comfortable pyjamas surprised her. But watching his playful smile, forgetting her momentary sadness a few moments ago, she felt a smile reaching to her lips too as she said,

"Kia Batuk! Woh tou mere… you know… Lazy days ki attire hai. You know I like to sleep in comfortable clothes anyway. Aur yeh nightie mien kia burai hai? It's so soft… and comfy…"

Running an appreciative glance along her body, his gaze turned a little intense. All playfulness gone now, his voice turned a notch hoarser as he said,

"Yes… it's soft…comfy… and extremely beautiful. Just like the woman who is wearing it!"

Mallika felt her heart stop-once again!

Batuk had said many things to her during their intimate moments that indicated that he found her attractive. But he had never called her beautiful like this.

Her insides warmed as a wave of pleasure washed over her.

Noticing his darkening eyes, her heart restarted beating painfully in her chest.

As her breathing started to quicken, he dropped his gaze to her long, beautiful neck.

Mallika felt the skin on her neck begin to flame as his gaze lingered there.

And then, coming closer, he looked into her eyes and said,

"I have to return something to you. And actually… mere abhi yahan aanay ka one of the reasons yeh bhi tha."

Her brows drew closer as she looked at him in confusion.

Reaching into the chest pocket of his night robe, he drew something out of it.

Mallika's brows straightened as she saw what he was returning.

The gold locket that she had so lovingly got custom-made by a jeweller in Italy.

She had fallen for him even before they had gotten intimate for the first time. And she hoped beyond hopes that Batuk felt the same way for her.

Out of the giddy excitement of first love, she had decided to get a physical reminder in the form of an object about their budding romance.

The heart-shaped locket with beautiful red roses had two partitions. And in each partition, Mallika had put his and her photos.

When she had collected the locket from the jeweller, she had excitedly shown it to Batuk. She had hoped that he would love it too. But his reaction was very different.

The moment he saw that heart-shaped locket, the bold proclamation of even the idea of love had made his blood run cold.

And when she requested him sweetly to put the locket and chain around her neck, he had gone berserk!

First, the idea of love and devotion, and then the intimate thought of having his photo dangle close to her heart made him extremely angry.

All his fears and allergy to love had resurfaced.

He didn't want to feel anything deeper for Mallika. And he didn't want her to mix any physical attraction they felt for each other with love too! He didn't want her to harbour and nurture such stupid feelings… and so, with all the coldness in the world, he yelled at her brutally!

He refused to help her wear that locket… He saw how her eyes teared up and how hurt she was, but he ignored everything and stormed out of that scene. Shortly after, he cheated on her.

His reaction was extremely upsetting.

However, later when they made up, he placated her somehow and she decided to leave the locket boxed in her drawer only.

But when she came to Tulsipur, she had decided to resort to stubbornness and do anything that could remind Batuk of how close they used to be.

Using it as a weapon of blackmail and manipulation, she had started wearing that locket in Tulsipur. And Batuk couldn't stop her then!

Later, when they broke up and she went back to Delhi, she used to miss that locket very much. But then she made herself understand that leaving her past and all the memories and objects associated with Batuk behind was perhaps the best idea to move on.

But that's a separate fact that she could actually never forget the feel of his picture close to her heart.

And all those feelings stormed her as her eyes took in that locket in Batuk's hand now.

Her eyes teared up as she recalled everything from the past, and Batuk saw that too.

His own heart was breaking apart at the memories of his vicious reaction towards that beautiful locket and her sweet sentiment back then.

And so, very softly, cupping her cheek, he told her somberly,

"Mallika… yeh tumhara locket mere ghar mein reh gaya tha. Bondita ne mujhe lautaya tha sometime back. Tabb se… I have been treasuring it. Lekin aaj samay aagya hai ki yeh apne asal owner ke pas wapis pohanch jaye."

As tears started rolling down her cheeks, his own eyes got wet too. Gently skimming his fingers along the skin of her neck, he whispered,

"Aaj samay aagya hai ki yeh locket apni original jagha pohanch jaye… Jahan yeh sajta hai… Jahan ke liye yeh bana hai. Miene pehle tumhare sath aur iske sath buht ghalat kia tha. But today, I want to make amends. Please allow me to put it across your neck, Mallika."

It was such a heartbreakingly beautiful moment. Both of them were super emotional… and yet the desire and heat between them were just amplifying with each passing second.

Her breath hitched at the feel of his fingers along the skin of her neck and her heart was ready to explode at the way he had said those words!

All tears forgotten, her eyes involuntary closed as she arched her neck, giving him access to do anything he wished to do.

His own heart beating fast and his eyes still wet with the guilt of mistreating her in the past over such a beautiful thing, he slowly closed the gap between them.

Very softly, he leaned in closer to tie the chain around her neck.

She shuddered as his warm breath fanned across her skin when he leaned in some more to hook the clasp of the chain.

Batuk felt how her breathing had quickened and his own heart did somersaults!

Admiring the locket finally in its rightful place, he couldn't stop himself from brushing his fingers across the chain.

And then, he reached for the locket dangling across her chest that was heaving with her rapid, shallow breathing.

Her eyes were still closed, but the way her body was reacting to his proximity and touch told him how much she desired him truly.

And instead of feeling entitled, he felt… humbled!

He didn't deserve her affection… and yet, that was all he needed!

She was all he needed to live!

And no matter how much he had tried to escape from his feelings for her before, he didn't want to do that anymore.

Lost in the sensual daze that had been casting shadows over them and that they had been trying to ignore, very gently, he flicked a finger across the locket, touching her skin there too in the process.

Mallika gasped as her eyes fluttered open. Batuk's heavy-lidded gaze shot to hers, and he saw desire and longing lurking in the deep pools of her eyes too.

His heart melted upon seeing his beautiful girl's response… His desire escalated as his gaze dipped to her partially open mouth.

Her soft, inviting lips were devoid of any lip colour. The urge to taste them again took over his entire being as he inched closer.

Their lips were just a mere inch apart and it was taking all his effort to stop himself from just slamming his mouth onto hers… rummaging his tongue into the softness… exploring every corner of her tongue and mouth with his own as if it was the first time!

He was lost in the deep sensations when he felt her tears falling on his hands that were cupping her cheeks.

Startled, he snapped out of his haze as he took a small step back to see properly what was wrong.

The hurt in her eyes and her tears suddenly made him realize that he had crossed a line.

Feeling horrible, his hands dropped from her face as he took another step back.

Nice to know the backstory of Batuk and Mallika. Now got an idea why Mallika didn't leave Batuk even after being BRC; he was the sweet Monkey too occasionally. Him desperately waiting to see her and taking her to shopping was so sweet. Same was the soup incident. Caring sweet Monkey ❤

Locket story was sad. Mean Monkey 😡

Anyway the good thing is that he had realized the mistake and rectified it too ❤❤

30th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 8:30 AM

After getting ready for the day, Mallika was about to head downstairs when a sudden bout of nervousness hit her once more. After a long night of lovemaking, Batuk had finally returned to his room in the wee hours of the dawn. They had decided to tell the rest of the family about their intent to marry today, and this was making Mallika extremely anxious.

Mujhe itna nervous nahi hona chahiye na… I mean kal sab log itne welcoming thay, aur clearly sab ko thoda tou idea hoga hi na? She thought, as she stood in the corridor outside her room. Warna aise tease nahi kertein humein… mager Batuk ke Kaka… woh mujhe pasand nahi kertein… aur woh tou sabse bade hai ghar mein… agar unhone mana ker diya tou? Aur phir Batuk ke Baba aur Sampoorna Maa ne unki baat maan li tou? Sampoorna Maa ko bhi mien pasand nahi thy na? And ager Papa ko pata chala ke Batuk ki family, that they don't like me… tou… nahi… tou sab gadbad hou jaaegi.

By now the nervousness was almost making her nauseous. As she closed her eyes and tried to calm down, she was suddenly grabbed from behind and hauled into a room. Initially stricken with shock, she kept her eyes tightly shut, as her assailant pinned her against a wall. However, she relaxed immediately after, as her other senses recognised Batuk's extremely familiar presence.

A wide smile bloomed on her face as she playfully remarked, with her eyes still shut, "Don't mind, par mujhe pata hona chahiye tha ke tum aisi atrangi harkat kerouge."

Batuk let out a cackle of laughter in response, before leaning closer toward her.

His upper body which was still slightly damp with his shower and was not covered by his towel rubbed against hers slightly. Mallika's breath hitched as all their intimate moments came crashing to her mind, suddenly making her extremely, and dangerously aware of him!

Her eyes were still closed. But her heightening colour and the way her breathing pattern changed subtly made him aware that she was as much affected by him as he was to her.

Not to mention that he was finding her very delicious to look at!

Clad in a deep blue checkered elegant long dress with splashes of black and orange, she was looking stunning. The dress was neither sleeveless, nor backless, and yet it was alluring. Her make up was minimal, yet she looked so beautiful that Batuk felt his heart would explode. Her cheeks which were getting pink naturally were making him giddy with love. Suddenly, he wanted to do loving things to her that he was sure would make her cheeks flame more!

Her long and naturally curled thick eyelashes over her closed eyes felt like casting shades on her cheeks. And they somehow made Batuk's heart flutter too as he recalled how they had fluttered last night also when he had brought her to the peak of her ecstasy. Or how they had gotten wet with tears when he had proclaimed his love for her.

Her plump lips were enriched in mildly pink hues. The way her lips had partially opened up with her own desire when he had gotten close to her in his semi-naked glory made him feel the sudden urge to devour them again!

And it has been just a few hours since I came out of her room!

The sudden thought made him smile. He realized that he was a completely gone case!

He was totally bewitched by this enchantress in his arms…

And instead of feeling disturbed by the extent and depth of his feelings for her, he felt a strange joy… A euphoria that was making him believe that he was extremely blessed to be able to get second chances even with all his past mistakes.

A mixture of desire shooting through his nerve stream and a poignance of feeling so blessed made him push slightly harder into her until a soft moan escaped her parted lips.

He realized that the response was elicited because of his own desire! It had poked into her through the barrier of a white towel hanging low around his waist.

The realization brought another smile to his lips as he besottedly looked at her.

She was fully dressed and ready to start the day, while he was fresh out of his shower, and not at all decent to even step out of this room!

He knew that they were supposed to be out and about soon. But the temptation to love his beautiful enchantress right here right now was also getting very strong with each passing second.

Mallika's responses were also fueling his desire to give in to the temptation.

However, he needed to have her look at him. He wanted her to open her eyes…

Suddenly tempted to see his own image in those glorious orbs, he shrugged his wet hair slightly.

The action caused him to shower a generous amount of water on her face, which led her to slowly open her eyes, only to get lost in the sensual haze being created.

Feeling an inexplicable pull as her languorous gaze landed on him as if in a trance, he slowly leaned towards her to capture her beckoning lips.

However, the enchantress whose thrumming heartbeats he could hear now suddenly shook her head. Before his lips could land on hers, she put her hand in between, making his lips collide with her palm instead of her lips.

Disgruntled and confused, he looked into her eyes questioningly.

Turning a deeper shade of pink, smiling sheepishly, she said,

"Woh…Batuk… if we start, we won't be able to stop na. Aur abhi sab jaag gaye honge…aur neeche humari raah dekh rhe honge."

Feeling impatient, he said,

"Ohh, chhodo sab ko. Just focus on this superman in front of you na!"

However, the magic of the moment and Batuk's claims were interrupted by a loud grumble emanating from his stomach.

He, who was leaning toward Mallika again stopped in his tracks upon hearing the strange rumbles from his belly.

A horrified and embarrassed expression slashed across his features as Mallika looked at him incredulously.

And then, she burst into a major fit of laughter.

Closing his eyes, sighing, he leaned his forehead against hers as he too joined in her laughter.

When she was finally able to speak, still bubbling with mirth, she said,

“I think… let's focus on getting something in this superman's tummy now!"

Nodding his head, Batuk straightened up too.

"You are right. Superman seems to be quite hungry! I should get ready and then we should go down.” He said with a sheepish grin.

Gently caressing her cheek, he then sweetly asked,

"Pick out a shirt for me na, please."

His sweet request made her heart flutter as she nodded a yes. Batuk had never asked her to pick clothes for him before. But now that he did, she suddenly felt a wave of happiness along with nervousness washing over her.

Mallika stepped towards the wardrobe and started going through the clothes, all the while stealing glances at Batuk as he dressed. Batuk, too, was observing her through the mirror. His heart fluttered as he saw her doing something so domestic as picking out clothes for him. The fluttering intensified as he noticed that she had picked a shirt to match her own outfit. Her work complete, she turned to him and held out the shirt.

“Woh… Jaldi se ready hou jaao, phir neeche jaate hai.” she said, before hesitantly adding. “Breakfast ke baad sabse shaadi ki baat bhi kerni hai na?”

“Umm… Mallika… Woh… I think we should announce this after the Mukhe Bhaat…” Watching her face fall on hearing this, he hastened to explain. “Kya hai na, agar koi tamasha hua, tou Mukhe Bhaat ka bhi saara mood kharab hou jaayega.”

“You… you think tamasha hoga?” Mallika asked, her heart sinking.

Seeing Mallika look so uncertain pinched Batuk’s heart. He covered the short distance between them and caressing her cheek gently, attempted to reassure her.

“Actually, mujhe tou sirf Kaka ke reaction ka darr hai. Baaki everyone else loves you!”

“Really Jee? Sampoorna Maa bhi? I mean, last time woh bhi mujhe pasand nahi kerti thy na?” Mallika asked, still uncertain.

Batuk’s face flamed up as he remembered what Sampoorna’s problem with Mallika had been.

“Don’t worry about it…” He said hurriedly as he took the shirt from her hands and slipped it over his shoulders. “That was a weird misunderstanding… But ab sab sab sorted hai…”

“Misunderstanding? Kaisi misunderstanding?” Mallika asked curiously.

“Woh…” he looked down, suddenly feeling embarrassed. “Sampoorna Maa didn’t like ke unke bete ki girlfriend, unke doosre, shadishuda bete ko galat nazar se dekh rahi thy”

“WHAT!!! But miene kab…” she suddenly quietened down, her eyes widening comically with horror, as realization dawned on her. “Oh… no!” she whispered, stepping back and looking down, her own cheeks flaming.

“Arey… Don’t worry…” Batuk said, gripping her shoulders comfortingly. “Sampoorna Maa ko ab pata hai ke tum Boudi ke husband ko nahi, apne hi boyfriend ko waise dekh rahi thy, so ab it’s all good.”

“Ohh… okay then.” Mallika said silently, still refusing to look him in the eye as she busied herself in buttoning up his shirt. After a few moments of silence, she looked back at him, gripping his collar. “Waise Jee… Were you trying to say ki mera tumhe galat nazar se dekhna allowed hai?” she asked with a playful smile.

“Of course allowed hai!” Batuk exclaimed, a wide smile on his own face, as he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to himself. “In fact, as far as I am concerned, tumhari yeh galat nazar is very very welcome!”

As he leaned in closer to try to kiss her again, she put her hand on his mouth, effectively blocking him from his advances, and with a worried but apologetic smile, she asked,

“Chalo Sampoorna maa ka tou abh masla nahi raha. But what about your Kaka, Batuk? He also doesn't like me so much naa?” The sadness in her voice and her genuine concern to be approved by his family melted his heart.

Sighing, he pointed towards his mouth that was still being covered by her hand, signalling her to let him answer.

Flustered, Mallika snatched her hand, releasing his mouth.

Heaving a deep breath at the failure of all his advances, he gathered her closer and said,

“Kiss tou kerne nahi de rahy ho. Abh baat bhi nahi kerne dena chahty thyn kia?”

Shaking her head, her cheeks reddening as she said,

“Nahi na jee… Aap kiss ker lena baad mien. Lekin pehle humara problem tou solve kerou na. Ghar walon ka… Kia hoga Batuk?” Her voice which was laced with worry quivered as she chewed on her lip while wondering.

Finding her extremely adorable, mulling over all such mundane things, he smiled, and caressing her cheek softly, he said,

“Don't worry na yaar. Dekho… Mien hun na tumhare sath? Aur tum Kaka ki bhi fikar na kerou. Unko handle kerne ke liye I have a plan.”

“Plan?” she asked in confusion.

Smiling widely, pinching her cheek lovingly, he replied,

“Yes, baby! We are going to gather allies.”

Mallika’s eyes widened as she exclaimed,

“You mean…?”

Nodding his head, still smiling, he kissed the place on her cheek where he had pinched her, and affirmed,

“Yes! Exactly!”

Relief washed over her face, finally a broad smile adorned her lips as she wound her arms around his neck and closing the gap between them, whispered excitedly,

“Bass…phir tou humara kaam ho hi jayega samjho!”

Nuzzling her nose with his own, he whispered mischievously,

“Darling, humara kaam ho chuka hai, aisa samjho. Kyunki humari shadi na ho, aisa ho hi nahi sakta. Ager Kaka ne ziada problem kia bhi, tou bhi koi farq nahi paday ga kyunki phir mien tum ko bhagaa ker le jaonga! Chahay Mars per bhi jaa ker shadi kerni paday, kerun ga. Lekin tum ko nahi chhodun ga akele.”

It was such a sweet thing to hear. Although Batuk had tried to infuse humour into such a sentimental statement, Mallika's heart fluttered with happiness.

Her man was going to stand with her through all thick and thin.

She felt a joy coursing through her bloodstream as an intense gush of love shook her to the core.

Embracing him tightly to herself, she whispered,

“I love you Batuk. Mien bhi tumhare liye har terha ka stand lun gy, hamesha.”

His lips that were again trying to reach hers stilled for a second on hearing this statement.

A scary thought occurred to him as he blurted worriedly,

“Darling, meri family ko tou hum handle ker lien ge. But what about your parents? Ager tumhare papa ne manaa kia tou?”

Smiling, she nuzzled her lips around the corner of his mouth, and said,

“Well… woh na maanay tou kia hua? Mien khud hi bhaag ker ajaongy aap ke pas. Phir aap khud hi nipatna apne sasur jee se!”

This reminder of the change in their relationship with each other, and how other relations will add on with just one change made his heart giddy with a strange mixture of nervousness and happiness.

Overwhelmed by emotion, he just did the only thing that was suddenly extremely urgent.

He captured her wandering lips around his mouth in a quick, hungry kiss!

30th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 9:00 AM

“Patibabu, aapko kya lagta hai? Batuk ko kia baat kerni hougi humse?” Bondita asked, as she arranged the books on the shelves in the study. “Shayad, Mallika ke baare mein? Kal raat ko Batuk usay milne bhi gaya tha! Aisa hou sakta hai ke unn dono ke beech sab sahi hou gaya hou? Aur yahi khushkhabri sunani hou usey?”

Anirudh simply grumbled something inaudible, causing Bondita to turn to him in exasperation.

“Patibabu!” she called out, her hands on her waist. “Kya hua hai aapko? Meri baatein bhi nahi sunn rahe hai, bas wahan baithe baithe khudse badbada rahe hai!”

“Tou aur kya karu? Meri baat koi sunna chahta hai bhi?” Anirudh grumbled, looking up from his files. “Koi meri fikr kerta bhi hai yahan? Sab bas pyaar ke dushman bane baithe hai!”

“Pyaar ke dushman?” Bondita asked, confused.

“Haan bilkul!" Anirudh affirmed, "Abh dekho, kal raat Rudhir Aaradhya ko sambhalne ki baari Batuk ki thy na, mager wou apni Mallika ke saath busy tha. Humne usko samjha, ke itne dino baad Mallika ko mila hai, aik dou din adjust ker lete hai. Mager usne kya kiya? Aaj subah badi mushkil se thoda waqt mila, tou usko aake darwaaza khatkhatana tha, taaki bacche phir uth jaaye! Hum uske liye itna sab kuch ker rahe hai, mager usko padi hi nahi hai humaari.”

“Aap bilkul sahi keh rahe hai Patibabu! Batuk ko iss baat ki saza milni hi chahiye.” Bondita agreed with false solemnity, desperately trying to control her own laughter. The sight of the selfless, fitoori Anirudh Roy Chaudhary, who had decided to take the weight of the whole world on his shoulders, cribbing like a child about something so trivial, made her happy beyond limits. After all, even he should be allowed to be selfish sometimes.

Anirudh simply looked up at her and glared, before continuing his tirade. “Sirf Batuk akela gunhegaar nahi hai! Meri biwi bhi pyaar ki dushman bani gayee hai!" At Bondita's quizzical expression, he elaborated. "Abhi hum study mein akele hai, mager meri biwi ko bhi mujhse duur wahan bookshelf ke paas khada rehna hai, aur Batuk ke baare mein sochna hai!” Anirudh huffed.

Bondita's eyes widened as she felt an insane urge to laugh crazily at her Pati Babu's antics.

Stifling her laughter, she composed her features and sweetly tried to placate her roothe piya!

“Achha… Tou yeh aapki naarazgi hai… Usko tou mein turant duur ker sakti hu…” She said flirtatiously, as she sashayed over to the desk, before sitting on the arm of Anirudh’s chair leaning over him a little. “Ab theek hai, Pati Babu?” she asked, innocently.

“Umm…" shaking his head in the negative, he wound his arm around her waist, and without wasting another minute, he pulled her onto his lap and said victoriously, "Abh theek hai.”

Bondita, who was at first startled but then had started giggling suddenly stopped as she felt her Pati Babu's gaze intensifying. Pulling the hem of her sari up, his hand was now caressing her legs sensuously as he whispered, his voice thick with desire,

"I crave you so much, Jaan…"

Pressing her legs to entrap his fingers wandering around her sensitive spot now, all traces of laughter were gone from her face in a jiffy, replaced by a sudden need and an intense craving for him.

Quick stabs of desire started shooting across her entire nervous system as a moan escaped her mouth upon her Pati Babu's insistent and experienced fingers around her core.

As she involuntarily pressed herself closer to him, her eyes turning languid with desire, she whispered without thinking,

"Pati Babu… aaah… please…" to which, Anirudh's complexion heightened as he started working the magic of his fingers in an effort to give his wife what she wanted.

However, their ventures into the prem ki gali were interrupted due to a sharp knock on the study door.

It took them a minute to straighten up and control their heavy breaths and racing hearts when they heard Batuk call out, “Big D, Boudi! Can we come in please?”

To Anirudh's obvious irritation, Bondita immediately got up from his lap, straightened her sari, and quickly ran her hands across her face and hair to make them appear normal and casual. Once the restoration was done, stealing a glance at her completely irritated Pati Babu who was trying to control the evidence of his desires, biting her lips to stop herself from smiling at his frustration, she answered in the affirmative.

A disgruntled Anirudh also stood up and positioned himself carefully behind Bondita to hide the proof of their earlier activities.

Batuk pushed open the study door and entered with Mallika, their hands entwined and a radiant glow on both their faces!

Despite all his irritation, a small, knowing smile appeared on his lips. Bondita had also noticed the glow, and she had also reached the same conclusion. Turning her head slightly, they shared a meaningful look with each other as they confirmed within themselves.

It was clear evidence of what Batuk and Mallika had been up to last night!!

"Kal raat ko clearly sab kuch sahi hou gaya tha." Anirudh whispered softly to his wife from behind.

"Haan Patibabu, '' Bondita also whispered. But then, she wondered and asked her husband in hushed tones, "Waise Pati Babu… hum bhi itna zyada chamakte hain kia? I mean… kia humien dekh ker bhi loagon ko pata chal jata hoga ki hum kya kerte rahay hain?"

Her cheeks then turned pink as she recalled that they had actually initiated something like that just now also.

Feeling mortified, she subtly turned a little to look at her husband again.

However, Anirudh's reply made her forget her mortification and instead, smile widely.

"Agli baar koi pyaar ka dushman na bane tou khud hi dekh lena." Anirudh had whispered back with a flirtatious grin.

Matching his grin with her own, she suggested innocuously, “Aik kaam kerte hai, iss Batuk ke bacchay ki baat khatam hou tou usko duty pe lagake jaate hain dekhne. I am very curious now.”

Anirudh nodded his head in acquiescence with a determined look on his face. And then, he guided Bondita to meet Batuk and Mallika in the seating area.

"Bolo Batuk, kya baat kerni thy humse?" He asked, trying to sound all business-like and serious.

Batuk looked at him nervously. He found it odd that his brother was still standing behind Bondita. As if she was his shield!

However, he didn't put much thought into it and after looking at Bondita, his eyes shifted back to Anirudh's as he blurted out,

“Woh Big D, Boudi… Actually… Kal raat ko… I asked Mallika to marry me!”

“Ohh… achha…” Anirudh replied, his face expressionless as he then moved his gaze to Mallika. “Aur tumne kya jawaab diya Mallika? Kya tum Batuk se shaadi kerna chahti hou?”

“Yes Dada.” Mallika replied, with an earnest smile on her face. “Miene haan kaha. Hum dono yeh shaadi chahtay hai.”

Anirudh did not reply immediately, causing Mallika and Batuk to look at each other nervously. He exchanged a meaningful glance with Bondita, before turning to the duo with a big smile on his face, saying,

“Congratulations! Durga Ma ka shukar hai Batuk ke tumme akal aa gayi, warna humein tou laga tha tum dono aise hi dosti dosti khelte reh jaaoge!”

“Big D!!” Batuk whined, before turning to Bondita to see her reaction. The sight of her gleeful smile directed at him made him gulp in fear.

Ever since Batuk had interrupted his Dada and Boudi six months back, he had taken to teasing her relentlessly about her “colourful” sex life. This teasing would come up often, especially when Bondita would request Batuk to watch the twins so that Anirudh and Bondita wouldn’t be interrupted.

But now, Bondita was the one with ammunition against him, and She. Wanted. Payback.

Smiling widely, she looked back at her Pati Babu. Surreptitiously stealing a glance at the state of his manhood because of which she was being used as a shield, satisfied that everything looked normal now, she shifted her focus back to her devar and to-be-devrani.

Batuk took a tiny step back as Bondita approached them, a bit surprised when she embraced Mallika first, congratulating her and welcoming her officially into the family.

After that she turned to him, grabbing him in a bear hug and congratulating him as well. But he knew her too well now to be relieved so soon. And rightly so, because she took the opportunity to whisper in his ear.

“Tou abh kis cheez ko repair ki zarurat hai Chhote Zamindaar? Shower ko ya bed ko?”

“Boudiiiii!!" he whined, before retorting playfully, "Kaise ashleel sawaal puchh rahi hou? Roy Chaudhariyon ki Bahu ko shobha deta hai kya aisa puchhna?” Batuk asked, in perfect mimicry of Kaka, earning only a smack from Bondita in response.

The instinctive response to Bondita’s teasing reminded Batuk about why they chose to confide in Dada and Boudi in the first place. Batuk separated himself from Bondita and addressed her and Anirudh again.

“Woh… Big D, boudi, hum dono soch rahe thay ke Mukhe Bhaat ke baad sabko iss baare mein bata dein. Mager Kaka…”

“Uski tum chinta mat kerou Batuk." Anirudh reassured him. "Hum abhi chal ke Baba aur Sampoorna Maa se iss baare mein baat kerte hain. Kaka ko Baba hi sambhaal lenge.”

“Baba?" Batuk asked, confused. "I mean yes Baba recover hone ke baad kaafi open hou gaye hai mager…” he trailed off, the question on his mind left unsaid.

Kya Baba Kaka ke against koi bhi decision lenge?

Anirudh however, had picked up on the unsaid question. “Kal Baba khud aaye thay mere paas Batuk. Yeh kehne ke humein Mallika ke parents se baat kerke tumhari shaadi fix ker deni chahiye.” he answered. Seeing Batuk and Mallika’s shocked expressions, he explained with a smile. “Tum dono buht zyaada obvious hou, pata hai. Hum sab ko dikh raha tha ke tum dono ke beech kya chal raha hai. Kher, humnein phir tayy ker rakha tha ke agar Mallika ke jaane se pehle tum dono ne apas mein sab clear nahi kiya tou hum log yeh maamla apne haathon mein lenge.”

“Oh… oh… That’s great Big D! Aik dam brilliant! Tou phir hum abhi ke abhi Baba se baat kerne chalte hai! Chalo chalo!” Batuk excitedly exclaimed, whirling around to the door and starting to stride out, with Mallika struggling to keep up.

“Arey Batuk mere bhai… Ruko ruko…" Anirudh held on to his free hand to stop him. "Itni bhi kya jaldi hai Baba se baat kerne ki?”

“Big D!!! We need to go now, before sab Mukhe Bhaat ki tayyari mein busy hou jaaye!”

Anirudh and Bondita shared a grin seeing Batuk's eagerness before Anirudh straightened his face and asked Batuk seriously.

“Dekho, aik baar phir se soch lou Batuk! Tumhe sach mein turant jaana hai Baba ke paas!”

“Haan Big D!!! Of course! Aap kyun rok rahe hou humein?” Batuk asked, desperate and confused.

“Yeh lou, bhalai ka zamaana nahi raha. Theek hai, chalte hai turant! Mager abhi se warn ker raha hunn mien, aik baar tumne Baba se baat ker li, tou phir shaadi hone tak tum dono akele mein nahi mil paaoge!”

That declaration caused both Batuk and Mallika to stop in their tracks and look at Anirudh in shock.

“What?? Big D!!! Aisa kaise… But why?” Batuk asked with a wail.

“Arey, yehi reet hai, shaadi se pehle dulha dulhan akele mein nahi mil sakte! Sab ko kerna padta hai! Humein bhi kahan milne diya tha, hai na Bondita?”

“Haan Patibabu!" Bondita agreed, mock seriousness in place. "In fact, humein inke kamre bhi badalne padenge. Jaise humein door door waale kamre diye thay na Sampoorna Maa ne?”

“Boudiiiiiii!!! Aap bhi? Aur waise, aap dono kabse aisi “reet '' mein maan’ne lagey? Samjho na Boudi! Mien Mallika se mile bina kaise rahunga?” Batuk argued back.

“Sirf akele mein milna allowed nahi hai. Tum dono group mein mil hi sakte hou." Bondita said as if making a great concession.

"Haan…" Anirudh added. "Aur bhi options hai, tum dono aik doosre se khidki ke through baat ker sakte hou, phone pe baat ker sakte hou, prem patra likh sakte hou… Aur waise bhi Mallika jab wapis jaaegi tab bhi yahi kerna padega na?”

"Wahi na Big D!!!! Mallika sirf 2 aur din hai yahan, and usme bhi aap humein saath time spend nahi kerne douge kya?"

"Ab hum kya ker sakte hai Batuk, reet tou reet hoty hai na…"

"Big D!!!! Boudi!!!!! Please na!!! Sirf Mallika yahan hai tab tak tou humein saath rehne dou na!!! I promise, uske baad mien aap dono ki har baat maanunga. Rudhi aur Aaru ko bhi apne paas rakhunga, aap kaho tou har roz! Big D pleeeeeeease!!!"

By now Batuk looked like he was about to burst into tears, making it extremely difficult for Anirudh and Bondita to hold in their own laughter. With a playful smirk on his face, Anirudh turned to Mallika, and asked her solemnly, "Aik baar phir soch lou Mallika, kya tumhe waqai iss rondu se shaadi kerni hai?"

Mallika too had caught on to the fact that Anirudh and Bondita had been playing with them, with a soft smile, she turned to give Batuk a loving look before answering, "Ab kya hi keru Dada, iss rondu se pyaar ker baithi hu mien, ab tou majboori hou gayi hai meri."

Her words made Batuk's heart overflow with all the love he felt, making him look at her extremely intensely, causing Mallika to turn pink, and Bondita to groan loudly, "Ohho, get a room you two!"

This groan made both of them turn towards her with extremely red cheeks. Anirudh, still not in a mood to stop teasing them, remarked, "Na na, no getting a room, abhi buht kaam pada hai. In fact Bondita, yeh dono distract na hou isiliye inhe durr durr waale kaam dete hai."

"Dadaaaaaaaaaa!!"

The unexpected source of this whine caused Anirudh and Bondita to turn towards Batuk and Mallika in surprise. Batuk too was looking at Mallika with widened eyes, while Mallika was looking at all of them with a sheepish smile. Suddenly unable to say anything more, all four of them burst out into peals of laughter.

30th July 1943, Roy Chaudhary Haveli, 9:00 PM

“Nahi! Yeh nahi ho sakta. Yeh ladki iss ghar ki bahu nahi bann sakty.” His thundering voice resonated against the walls of the Roy Chaudhary haveli.

Binoy’s hand that was reaching out for the telephone trembled slightly as he heard his Da’s harsh words.

Anirudh and Bondita looked at each other as anger started flaring in Anirudh’s eyes.

“I knew it! Humare ghar mein koi tamasha na ho, aur KAKA kabhi zindagy mein kuch asani se hone dein, aisa tou ho hi nahi sakta na!”, his eyes angrily told Bondita, who had an extremely disappointed look plastered on her own face as she silently agreed with her husband.

However, she was grateful that this tamasha was not happening in front of the whole village, as was the “norm of the Roy Chaudharys!” Thankfully, everything was happening after all the guests left and it was just the family members in the house now.

Sumati and Tapur had taken Rudhir and Aaradhya upstairs while Binoy, Sampoorna, Thaku ma, Anirudh, Bondita, Shashwati, Tupur, Batuk and Mallika had remained downstairs in the hall.

After speaking to Siddharth the previous day, and getting all her questions answered, Tupur had returned to inform the family that she had accepted his proposal. This had been a cause of much celebration in the family. When he had come for the Mukhe Bhaat, he had informed the family that he would be bringing his family over the next day to formalize the engagement.

Siddharth had just left and Thakuma, in a very pleasant mood, was discussing the wedding dates with Trilochan when Binoy cleared his throat and said,

“Kalindi Jee, Da, mien soch rha hun ki Tupur aur Siddharth ki shadi ke sath sath Batuk aur Mallika ki bhi shadi kerwa dete hain. Aur agle mahinay nahi, balki isi mahinay ki aakhiri tareekhon mien. Kia kehte hain aap loag?”

Binoy’s suggestion did not come as a surprise to Thakuma, nor to most of the others in the hall. Batuk and Mallika’s changed behaviour since morning had made it evident that such an announcement was inevitable.

“Arey wah, Binoy Babu. Yeh tou aap ne buht accha sujhav dia.” She happily conceded while casting a loving glance toward the extremely nervous couple sitting near Anirudh and Bondita.

Binoy smiled at her and replied lightly, “Bhayee, miene socha ki aik beti ko ghar se vida ker rahe hain tou doosri ko ghar le ker aana chahiye na.” And then, looking at Mallika, he said,

“Mallika, mujhe tumhare parents se baat kerni hai. You know, shaadi ke details wagera discuss kerne. So, please zara number batana takay mien yeh shubh kaam abhi hi ker lun.”

Chewing at her lower lip, Mallika looked nervously at Batuk, and then at Anirudh and Bondita who were happily smiling too. Finding courage from them, she quietly told her residence number to Binoy, but before she could complete it, Kaka’s bellowing voice stilled everyone.

“Nahi! Yeh nahi ho sakta. Yeh ladki iss ghar ki bahu nahi bann sakty.”

Anirudh and Bondita sharply inhaled, while Batuk all but mentally rolled his eyes as he thought, Lou… ho gaya wahi jiska darr tha!

Despite her own gut feeling and Batuk’s mild warning earlier, Mallika still felt terrible after hearing this. She knew that Kaka would object, but now that it really happened, her heart felt like it was sinking.

Quietly putting back the receiver on the cradle, Binoy straightened up as he looked into his brother’s angry eyes, and then calmly said,

“Da, isme galat kya hai? Mallika acchi ladki hai, dono aik doosre se pyaar kerte hai. Aur humien inki shaadi ka samarthan kerna chahiye, naaki pareshaani khadi kerni chahiye.”

Shaking his head angrily, Kaka rose up from his seat and stomping his cane on the ground, he said forcefully, “Nahi Binoy…mien aisa nahi hone dun ga.”

“Mager kyun, Kaka? Aap aise Batuk aur Mallika ki zindagy ka faisla unki marzi ke khilaaf ja ker kaise ker sakte hain?” Anirudh asked angrily.

Shaking his head, glaring hard at Mallika who seemed to have shrunk and was practically trying to hide herself by staying closer to Batuk, he roared,

“Yeh dekho isko! Yeh Batuk ke sath kaise chipak ker bethy hai! Aur… aur yeh jaise kapde pehenti hai, kia koi shareef ladki aise kerty hai? Humare ghar ki bahu betian kia iss Mallika jaisi hain kahin se bhi? Humari Bondita bahu bhi baahir se padh ker ayi thy, lekin kia woh apne sanskaar bhooli? Kia usay kabhi Anirudh ke sath, jo ke uska pati hai, aise khulay aam badon ke samnay besharmon ki terha chipakte dekha hai?”

Huffing out a blaze of fury, he then glared hard at Batuk and said,

“Aur tum! Bhool gaye yeh kaise tumhien dhamkaya kerty thy? Humien yaad hai acchay se. Hum ne dekha tha kaise yeh tum se ashleel baatien ker rhy thy, aur keh rhy thy ke ager tum iske pas roaz raat ko nahi gaye tou yeh Bondita ko sach bata de gy ke tum Anirudh nahi, Batuk ho! Tum bhool gaye hoge Batuk, mager hum nahi bhoolay! Humne apne kaano se aur inn aankhon se khud yeh sab dekha tha!”

Batuk’s face turned red as he realized that his Kaka had overheard his conversation with Mallika when she had come to the haveli all those months ago when Anirudh had gone missing. Sighing, he realized how incriminating it must have appeared to a conservative man like Kaka. Suddenly, he understood that it was going to take a lot more effort to convince Kaka than he had originally anticipated.

Mallika had closed her eyes in embarrassment. She felt as if, in front of everyone, Kaka had exposed her naked. Waves of shame washed over her as helpless tears pricked her eyes. She couldn't face anyone. She was drowning in her shame and misery when suddenly, she felt Batuk tightly clasping her hand, and then, her eyes fluttered open when she heard Anirudh’s firm voice,

“Kaka, uss waqt jo hua, woh ateet ki baat hai. Tabb Mallika ne kya kiya aur kyun kiya tha, hum jante hain aur samajhte bhi hain. Iss liye Kaka, aap maazi ko maazi mein hi rehne dein. Tabb in dono se kuch ghalatiyan hui thy, lekin abh yeh dono apni ghalation se sabaq haasil ker chuke hain. Inko pata hai abh ke aik doosre ke liye kitne zaruri hain yeh loag. Iss liye please, mien aap se minnati kerta hun, inki shadi mien rukawat na daalien.”

"Mager Anirudh, yeh ladki humare Batuk ke liye theek nahi hai. Arey yeh humare parivar ke liye hi theek nahi hai!" Kaka objected.

Batuk had had enough.

Rising up from his place, looking straight into Kaka's eyes, he asked,

"Kyun Kaka? Ager Mallika sari pehenti, western dresses na pehenti, meri dost na hoty, mere sath pyar ke rishte mein na hoty… aap ke kisi Delhi-based businessman friend ki beti hoty, tabb sab sahi hota na? Tabb tou aap ko aitraz nahi hota. Abhi aap ko sirf iss liye Mallika se objection hai kyunki woh apni marzi se jeene ki aadi hai."

Huffing again, Kaka glared hard at Mallika and acidly replied,

"Apni marzi se jeena aur besharmi se jeene mein buht farq hai, Batuk. Abhi tum jazbaati horhe ho… pyar mein andhe ho… abhi tumhien nazar nahi aarha. Mager iss ladki ko dekh ker iske maa baap ki tarbiyat, iski nasal ke aur khandan ke baray mein acchay se pata chalta hai. Aisi ladki humare khandan mein shamil nahi ho sakty. Yeh humari naslien kharab kere gy."

"Haan, jaise iss khandan mien tou sab heeray moti ke banay hue hain!" Thakuma muttered under her breath. Even she had had enough. Having been a victim of character shaming herself, she always felt a protective instinct towards other young girls who were similarly shamed. And while Mallika’s lifestyle may not be something she personally agreed with, it did not take away from the fact that Mallika and Batuk clearly loved each other dearly. And if they had no issues with this, no one else had any right to interfere. And it was time to explain this to Zamindar Babu, to put some sense in his head.

"Zamindar babu… Mallika ki tarbiyat se ziada zaruri yeh dekhna hai ki uski TABIYAT kaisi hai. Uski seerat kaisi hai. Aur kia woh aap ke bete ko khush rakh sakty hai ki nahi. Aur jahan tak mien Mallika ko samjhi hun, woh aik buht acchi ladki hai. Aur ghalatiyan kis se nahi hoty?"

Looking pointedly at him now, she couldn't resist from taunting, "Abh aap khud hi dekhiye na… itne Azeem aur Shaandaar khandan se hote hue khud aap ne kitni sari ghalatiyan ki hi haina apni zindagy mien!"

Kaka's face reddened on hearing this. He couldn't take such insults!

"Ghalatiyan hui hain hum se, mager hum CHARITRA ke kharab nahi thay iss ladki ki terha!" He hissed while glaring at Thakuma.

Bondita couldn't take such a stupid accusation pointed toward Mallika as she blurted out angrily, "Kaka Sasurjee! Kia chhote kapde pehenne se kisi ladki ka charitra naapa ja sakta hai? Wahan London mein itne saray loag chhote kapde pehente thay. Un mien se kitne mere dost thay. Aur mien janty hun ke unki soch kitni achi thy. Miene maana ki humare haan chhote kapde achay nahi samjhay jatay, mager kia yeh sahi hai? Yeh faisla kerna ki kisko kia pehenna pasand hai, kia yeh har insan ka haq nahi hai? Aur kya yeh doosron ka haq hai ki ager koi ladki zara sa apni marzi aur khushi se, kuch alag pehen le tou uss per chippi laga di jaye ki uska charitra theek nahi hai!"

Trilochan looked at his Bahu in surprise. While he knew that she was as fitoori as her husband, and shared his views on freedom and equality for women, she had never openly contradicted him in public like this. And clearly, everyone in the hall was supporting her, and by extension, that Bijli Mallika.

He too had been observing Mallika ever since her arrival yesterday and didn’t understand the behaviour of the family towards this girl. The last time she had come to Tulsipur, Som and Sampoorna had also shared in his discomfort and disapproval for Mallika, but Som wasn’t here now, and Sampoorna had completely changed her behaviour and ACCEPTED that girl as family. Batuk too was behaving like a besotted fool and the rest of the family was treating this completely inappropriate girl like a long lost family member. They had even shown her off to all the guests as Batuk and Bondita’s close friend from Italy! Didn’t they understand what it looked like in the eyes of society? And now, Binoy was planning on making her a Roy Chaudhary Bahu? And everyone was supporting him? No, that could not happen.

Closing his eyes in frustration now, he bellowed, "Bass! Buht hogya. Buht sunn lia hum ne. Tum mein se kisi ko samajh hi nahi aarha hai. Mager baat sirf kapdon ki bhi nahi hai. Iss ladki ki besharmi ki hai. Iske chaal chalan ki hai. Kitne aram se yeh Batuk ke sath reh rhy hoty hai. Arey ladkiyon ko apni lalsa kaabu mein rakhni chahiye. Jo ladki aik ladke ko apne paas bula sakti hai, kya pata aur kitno ko bulati hou. Kia aisi ashleel ladki kahin se bhi acchi biwi, acchi bahu, acchi maa ban sakty hai? Arey yeh sirf premika, mehbooba hi ban sakty hai! Aur Batuk, tum isko nahi chhodna chahte na? Theek hai. Tum isko mehbooba hi bana ke rakho jab tak tumhara dil na bhar jaaye. Isse shaadi kerne ki koi zarurat nahi hai. Shadi tou hum tumhari kisi buht acchhi, susheel, sanskari ladki se kerwayein ge!"

A gasp escaped Mallika's mouth as she heard such venomous words.

Nobody had ever made her feel so cheap!

She suddenly felt as if Kaka was calling her a prostitute!

Other people in the hall also felt their blood boiling. But before anyone could say anything, Batuk, whose facial expressions had turned murderous said ominously,

"WHAT. DID. YOU. JUST. SAY. KAKA?" He asked dangerously, emphasizing each and every word. "Are you saying, ke Mallika koi toy hai, ya koi tissue paper hai jisko mien use kerun aur phenk dun ga?"

Tears had started rolling down Mallika's cheeks, and Tupur, Sampoorna, and Bondita quickly went to sit beside her to console her. Shashwati too seated herself on Mallika’s lap and hugged her new Boudi.

Batuk watched this and his face hardened into granite as he bitingly said,

"Kaka, aap ki yeh baat itni giri hui thy ke mien believe nahi ker sakta ki aik AALA nasal ke, AALA khandan ke, jiski TARBIYAT bhi itni aala hui ho, woh yeh ghatiya baat kere ga… Woh bhi aik ladki ke liye!!"

Thakuma, who was also super pissed off at Kaka for his nonsensical remarks, felt happy to hear Batuk defending his love.

When Kaka tried to open his mouth to say something, Batuk shook his head, refraining from saying anything as he dangerously said, "Kaka, aur kuch mat kahiye, please. I respected you so much. Itna sab kuch hua… Aap ne mujhe bhi apne motives ke liye use kiya. Miene sab seh lia. Lekin aaj baat mere pyar ki hai. Meri Mallika ki hai. Pehle aap uske character assassination kerte rahay. Aur abh aap mien itni audacity hai ki aap mujhe yeh suggest ker rhe hain ki mien… ki mien Mallika ko use kerun aur phir chhod dun?"

His voice shook with anger as he said,

"Aap ke so called standards ke hisab se, chhote kapde pehen’na, pyaar mein padna, shaadi se pehle aise sambandh banana, yeh sab aapko ashleel banata hai. Mager Kaka, ager Mallika mere sath chipakti thy, tou mien bhi tou usko apne sath chipkata tha. Woh chhote kapde pehenti thy aur mien usko unn kapdon mien dekhna pasand kerta tha. Kyunki mujhe aise kapde pasand hain. Agar Mallika mujhe apne paas bulati thy, tou mien uske paas jaata tha. Tou apki theory ke hisab se tou mien bhi characterless hua na! Woh kia kaha tha aap ne…cha…charit…charitra.. haan charitra… tou mera charitra tou phir Mallika se ziada kharab hua na! In fact mera charitra tou aur bhi kharaab kehelana chahiye, kyunki Mallika tou sirf mere sath sincere thy hamesha se. Mien hi besharmon ki terha bhatakta rehta tha. Multiple partners mere thay, uske nahi. Lekin mujhe sab chhoot hai. Mere liye free pass hai. Kyun kaka? Kyunki mien itne AALA khandan ka hun? Zamindaar hun? Mard hun?"

His voice had raised a few notches higher by the end of his caustic tirade.

And that was what stunned Kaka the most.

He had put Batuk through so much, but he had never, like never really raised his voice while speaking to him.

But today… it seemed that Kaka had finally managed to snap his patience.

And all of this was happening because of that girl!

Feeling his blood boil all over again, he accusingly pointed toward Mallika and yelled,

"Yeh dekho… Iss ladki ki wajeh se aaj tum apne Kaka se oonchi awaz mein baat ker rhe ho. Ulta jawab de rhe ho humien!! Yeh sab isi ladki ki kaaran hai."

But this time, before Batuk could say anything, another voice thundered,

"Bass ker dien Da! Buht hua abh!!" Taking off his glasses angrily, Binoy got up from his seat and said,

"Batuk aap se oonchi awaz mein iss liye baat ker rha hai kyunki AAP ne usko uksaya hai. Shuruat aap ne ki, Da. Dikh nahi raha aapko Da? Ya aap apne ahem mein dekh hi nahi paa rahay ki aap ne kitni ghalat baatien ki hain uss se. Woh bhi uss ladki ke baray mein jis se woh pyaar kerta hai?"

Shaking his head, and putting back his glasses atop his nose, he looked disappointedly at his brother and said, "Da… Abh bhi waqt hai. Aap baar baar aisi harkatein ker chuke hain jis se inn sab bacchon ki nazar mien aap ki izzat kamm ho chuki hai. Mujhe yeh achha nahi lagta. Mien aisa nahi chahta ki yaha chhote baday ka lihaaz khatam ho. Lekin mien yeh bhi nahi chahta ki mere Da ghalation per ghalatiyan kerte rahien."

Binoy's voice was now very low and had a sad, sympathetic tone to it as he looked at his brother and said, "Da, aap ghalat hain aaj.

Sighing, he went near his brother, and laying his hand on his shoulder, he said quietly,

"Aap ko aap ke pakshapaat se nikalna hoga, Da. Isi mien aap ki khushi aur sukh chhupay hain. Abh aap bada pann dikhayein aur Mallika aur Batuk ko ashirwaad dein."

Kaka thudded on the sofa heavily. He was defeated by none other than his own brother. The brother who had NEVER gone against him…

The brother who had always let him make the decisions related to family matters…

The brother who had always respected him so much.

That brother had today taken the matter into his hands!

Trilochan really had nothing else to say now!

Thakuma was surprised to hear such sensible things from Binoy as she gleefully thought,

Yeh Binoy Zameendar Babu itne aqalmand hamesha se tou nahi honge? Yaqeenan humari dawaon se hi inki soch badli hai!

Biting back her laughter at such an arrogant-silly thought, she went to Mallika.

Batuk had left the fight and was now crouching in front of his Mallika, holding her hands and consoling her.

He raised his tear-brightened eyes when Thakuma laid her hand on his head and said,

"Utho bacchon… Ronay dhonay ka waqt khatam hogya. Chalo, pehle apne Kaka aur Baba ka ashirwaad le lou, aur phir jaa ker Durga Ma se bhi ashirwaad le lena."

Patting her back, Sampoorna urged Mallika to stand up. Shashwati kissed her new Boudi's cheek sweetly and hopped off her lap. She then kissed her brother's cheek too and whispered,

"Sab se pehle mera ashirwaad le lien. Phir miene homework kerne chalay jana hai tou itna important kaam reh jayega!"

Stifling the sudden laughter that bubbled within him on hearing such an outrageously funny remark, he kissed her cheek back and whispered,

"Of course! Shashu madam ne ashirwaad nahi dia tou bhala meri shadi hoskty hai kia?"

After his fun banter with his sister, as Mallika stood up, Batuk also rose from his position.

Although Shashwati had effectively made his mood a lot better than before, he was still a little uncertain.

Taking Mallika's hand in his, they first bent in front of Thakuma who heartily blessed them.

And then, looking at each other, gulping nervously, they went towards Kaka and bent in front of him.

Kaka was so lost in his defeat that he didn't even register what was happening until Binoy gently took his hand and laid it on Mallika's and Batuk's heads while saying,

"Yeh lou, mein aur Da aik hi tou hain. Hum dono ki taraf se ashirwaad hai tum loagon ke liye. Hamesha khush raho."

Feeling more uncertain than being reassured, Batuk took Mallika's hand and they went towards Anirudh and Bondita.

Batuk was about to bend in front of Anirudh when he stopped him. And instead, crushed him into a bear hug as he whispered in his ear while swallowing his laughter at Batuk and Mallika's confused expressions,

"Yaqeen ker lou, Ullu. Humare Baba ne kaka ko complete check-mate ker dia hai!"

A smile appeared on Batuk's lips. First his sister, and now his brother were trying to make him happy. Acknowledging their efforts, he whispered back to Anirudh,

"Yaqeen nahi ho raha Big D. Ager Baba hamesha se hi aise hote tou Kaka kabhi ulti harkatein na ker patay."

And then, looking at each other, they both whispered unanimously,

"Tapur and Thakuma Zindabad!"

Kaka jumped up from his haze when the hall roared with the most ludicrous guffaws.

He was in so much sadma that he couldn't even react when he saw Kalindi jee also bursting into gleeful laughter.

The sudden change in the atmosphere amazed everyone else. But watching three people laughing heartily brought smiles to everybody's lips.

Except for Kaka, of course!

A/N2: We hope you enjoyed the chapter! We also wanted to let you guys know that the next chapter will be the Epilogue, and hence the last update for SIR.

Yes, SIR is soon coming to an end. We started this story as a cathartic process to tie up all the loose ends left in the show. We were working with a list of loose ends and now believe that we have done our best to tie them. The last few little details will be wrapped up in the Epilogue. We hope we did justice to the show and the love you have shown us!

Lots of Love

Brilliant chapter!! ❤❤

Deciding a person's,especially a woman's, nature depending on her dressing style is a very contemporary relevant issue too. Unfortunately even today we can see the attitude of TRC from the patriarchal mainstream morality. ITV shows also propagate this ideology to an extent. In most of the shows the good girl will be in traditional dress and the vamp in western dress. This is a highly illogical assumption. I'm happy that you two pointed out this irrational behavior along with the patriarchal double standard of giving freedom to men to do anything 👏👏👏🤗🤗

TRC's thoughts are so disgusting 😡😡😡

Nazuk Kali and Bon's reaction was expected. Binoy was the real surprise! ❤

Loved Shashu bear. As usual she made her cool Dada happy. RC brothers are really lucky to get her 🥰🥰
