🏏CRICKET: A Bat and A Ball game 🏏

(Tutorial Part-1)

Topic 1: What is Cricket?

•> A team sport that is played outdoors.

•> Originated in England and gradually became popular across the globe.

•> Played between two teams of 11 players each.

BB: Seedha aur simple language me cricket is a game where you have to protect your three stumps (wickets) from being broken. How you do it the whole point of the game. Sometimes it lasts 3 hrs sometimes 5 days.

Topic 2: Objective

•> Attempting to score more runs, while restricting the score of the opponent team by dismissing their all players.

Topic 3: Team Size

•> 11 players in each team and one of them is appointed as Captain.

•> Apart from these 11 players, few more players are there on each side who can only field as substitute for an injured team member.

•> During play, Fielding team should have 11 players and the opponent team can send only 2 players on the ground.

•> A 15-member squad is a must for all international tournaments conducted by the cricket’s governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC).

Topic: 4: Formats

International Cricket is played in 3 formats.

•> Test Match: Five-day format comprises 2 innings of each team. Played since 1877.

[2019-2021 ICC World Test Championship: New Zealand won the match by eight wickets to be crowned as the winners of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship]

•> One Day International (ODI): One-innings matches of 50 overs per side. Started in 1971 but gained in popularity from the 1980s.

•>T-20 International: One-innings matches of 20 overs per side. Newest, Shortest and Fastest form of the game. Started in 2005.

Topic 5: Cricket Equipment Dimensions

ICC has set standards for not only the size of equipments but also the logos used on the equipment along the rules of play.

🔹Bat : Shouldn't be more than 38 inches in length and 4.25 inches wide.

🔹Ball : Different weights and size are specified for men's, women's and junior cricket.

Men's cricket

Weight: From 5.5 ounces/155.9g to 5.75 ounces/163g

Circumference: 8.81in/ 22.4cm to 9 in / 22.9 cm

Women’s cricket

Weight: From 4.94 ounces/140 g to 5.31ounces/151 g

Circumference: From 8.25 in/21.0 cm to 8.88 in/22.5 cm.

Junior cricket – Under 13

Weight: From 4.69 ounces/133 g to 5.06 ounces 144 g

Circumference: From 8.06 in/20.5 cm to 8.69 in/22.0 cm.

🔹Keeper gloves − The keeper glove doesn’t have specific measurement but should not be made of stretchable material. The glove has webbing between thumb and the index finger.

✳️ A Glance at All Equipments

🔸Bat: A wooden bat is used. The wood used is from the Kashmir or English willow tree. The bat cannot be more than 38 inches (96.5 cm) long and 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) wide. Aluminum bats are not allowed. The bat has a long handle and one side has a smooth face.

🔸Ball: Red, White or Pink ball with a cork base, wrapped in twine covered with leather. [Sizes mentioned above]

• Red Ball (Test cricket ball)
• White ball (ODI and T20 cricket ball)
• Pink Ball (for day-night Test matches)

🔸Stumps: These are upright, cylindrical, long wooden poles shape with shard end like spear. This end goes into the ground so that stumps stand erect in the ground. They are 3 in numbers on both ends of pitch, together forms cricket wickets, each with a height of 28” (71.12 cm) and width of 9” (22.86 cm). The three stumps of the wicket have diameters between 1.375”-1.5” (34.9-38.1 mm).

🔸Bails: Two crosspieces made of wood, placed on top of the stumps. It helps in giving easy decisions by umpires to dismiss the batsman when the wicket is broken.The pair of bails set on top of the stumps have lengths of 4.375” (111.13 mm) with a maximum height above the stump of .5” (12.7 mm).

🔸Boundary: A rope which demarcates the perimeter of the field is known as boundary line. This is marked by a thick white rope

🔸Sight screen : A screen placed at the boundary( behind the rope)known as the sight screen. This is aligned exactly parallel to the width of the pitch and behind both pairs of wickets.It comprises cloth or canvas stretched across a board made of either wood or other material.

The sight screen is usually black or white in color. In Test matches where a red ball is used, the sightscreen is black, and in One Day Internationals or Twenty20 Internationals where a white ball is used, the screen is white.

The function of the sightscreen is to offer clear sight of the bowler and the delivery of the ball. It helps the batsman see the ball and track it to adjust the shot. The sightscreen also helps avoid distraction from spectatots.

🔸Leg Pads: These are worn by batsmen and wicket keepers to protect their lower limbs against the pace of the ball.They are made with cloth and leather. The front portion of the pads is very hard as there is hard plastic or wood sticks beneath. The rear portion is spongy and soft to soothe and comfort legs. Today’s pads are very light in weight but are still great protection for the batsmen.

Wicket keeper’s pads are similar to batting pads, but they are shorter and lighter in weight, making them easier to move and dive around in.

🔸Gloves: There are two types of gloves, one used by batsmen and other by the keeper.

(A) Keeper Gloves: These are worn on both hands to protect the fingers from injury. Cloth and leather are stitched together in the shape of fingers and palm to fit exactly. The inner-side of the glove has finger gaps with cork tips for more protection.

(B) Batsman Gloves: This gear is similar in shape but smaller and softer on the outer part when compared to keeper glove. It is used to hold the bat firmly. These gloves have thick padding above the fingers to provide extra protection with hard sponge on the outer area.

🔸Helmet: Helmets are worn by batsmen while batting and a maximum of one close fielder or keeper while keeping the stumps. Helmet is a mix of metal and hard plastic, having metallic grill in the front to protect face in case of any accident in the field be it full toss, top-edged or a throw, which can hit the player’s head.

🔸Abdominal Guard: It is high density plastic with smooth edge worn to protect the “privates” when batting against a cricket ball or other hard ball. Wicket keepers and fielders close to the wicket should also wear it. It is also called box, cup or cricket box.
