You're right, it never really needed more people, they needed the people to do and say more/different things. But the problem here I think is that they've actually blown most of their chances.

They tested the patience of their audience and now we have very little patience for their mistakes, so much so that each filler episode and each experimental track pushes us further away.

It's just a matter of time that we will just get completely bored of even asking them to steer the story one way or another.
