They just use their profession to cover up for the fact that they ultimately don't care about each other's feelings. If you want to prioritize family, you can do it regardless of your profession. The Birlas don't want to. This is how it has been Abhi's entire life. His emotions have been neglected, so this is nothing new for him. My heart obviously broke for Akshu, but just this once, Abhi allowed himself to think that Akshu would get the welcome she is so excited for and deserves. But, as soon as he saw the closed door, he knew what was going to happen -- the same thing that has happened his entire life.
