(Not) Love At First Sight
My heart nearly leaped out of my chest when my father swerved the car, in order to save us from crashing. Nida jumped as my father and uncle half-yelled in anger at the ignorance of the driver who was busy speeding and overtaking most cars around us, causing almost a dozen more accidents.
We slowed at the signal, still disturbed over our near-accident. The silver BMW screeched to a halt, the driver began honking impatiently. A man on a motorcycle in front of the sleek car said something to the driver out of annoyance…only to get smacked repeatedly at the back of his head.
Nida had told me she had dreamed this exact scenario, but with a handsome, prince-like stranger.
However the man in question was a far cry from that. Dressed in all leather with sunglasses which concealed his eyes, not much older than I, he made me go into panic mode the minute he placed a gun on my father’s head. Without think even once I ran upto them, grabbing my father’s arm, apologising profusely to the stranger, the adrenaline causing me to ramble but the horror of losing my father clouding everything else.
The man looked at me and froze, his face masking an expression of something I was not familiar with. Thankfully his lack of action helped me; I managed to drag my father to the car and pushed him in…only to turn and look at the man once again.
A handsome face, undoubtedly, one that could only have been carved by the Almighty…however it was tainted with arrogance, brashness and unfiltered magnanimous ego, which increased my disdain for him, filling my mouth with bile. At that very moment, he smiled, a huge genuine beam spreading across his face, flashing his all-too perfect features. A smile which instantly warmed up his face. A smile, almost as if it were his first real one in years, or possibly his first ever. A smile…for me?
I got into the car, still looking at him from the tinted window of my car. He swayed, almost out of coordination, as if he had suddenly been hit by an intoxicating substance. His friend was finding it difficult to seat him in the passenger seat. It would sound strange to anyone else, but I could vouch for the fact that even with his eyes covered, all this while…he kept on staring in my direction. He was looking for something, seeking something.
No…he wanted something. There was no way a man of his stature would ask. He would take whatever he wanted. The world must be at his feet.
My eyes fell on the number plate of his car…only there was no number. Shamsher, it proudly read.
Shamsher. Brave like a lion.
Yes, definitely a man who had it all.
But what did I have that he would want? Nothing. I only had dreams in my eyes of making my father proud. There was no way a mere middle class girl like me could give anything to a person like him.
The pit in my stomach grew at the thought of the amount of money he must have. The kind of power he must hold. What if…my father’s behaviour had caused problems for us?
No, I mentally scolded myself. He is way too drunk to think straight. I doubt he would even remember this encounter clearly.
I thought of Nida’s dream once again, thinking of how right and wrong I was. Shamsher was not a villain like I had said. He was a prince, albeit of Darkness. He was what nightmares were made of, and I was certain he would be a part of mine until I could put this incident behind me forever.
His face was still crystal clear in front of my eyes as we drove away from this horrific experience, away from the silver BMW, although a small part of me knew and dreaded, this was not the last time I had crossed paths with Shamsher…
