For me it’s a must. And I did get their approval. I told my Parents that I like this boy and want to get married to him. Dad said he will see. Inquire about family and this boy and get back to me. He took 6 months and I waited without asking a single question. After he said yes, he has been my rock throughout.

A few years ago I may have said yes but not today as I’m more confident in myself as an adult and I don’t agree with the idea that parents always know best and should be put on a pedestal. Parents are human and make mistakes, they don’t always know much about their children once they become adult. If their issue is around looks, status etc it’s none of their business as I will be sleeping with him and my parents don’t support me financially. Having said that, I’d take on board their advice and wouldn’t marry anyone disrespectful towards my family/friends. I’d probably value my close friends’ opinion a lot more.
