I think it was a mix of both and the idea that he can't love her. Aryan is adamantly on the IMNotInLoveWithImlie train and he's trying to convince himself. We saw the same in his convo with his alter ego.

He dropped her for HIMSELF. He got awkward to conscious physical touches and on top of that he might be questioned by Imlie. Also till now he openly didn't admit he loves her. Hence he dropped her for not getting embarrassed 😆
