Here's an okay-ish update to lift everyone's mood after the new leads have hijacked our show.😳
Chapter 2- A different side to Riddhima Bhatnagar.
"Sir, here are the reports regarding the experiment conducted on March 2nd." Akriti announced entering the lab.
"Exactly what I needed, thanks Ms Akriti Saxena."
"Sir, I've said this countless times, there's no need to address me so formally. Akriti is good enough."
"As much as I do appreciate your affinity for the lab and its people, I like keeping things professional. Understood?" Anubhav gave a small smile before resuming his work, missing how Akriti's face fell upon hearing his statement.
She had been trying her level best in gaining her senior's attention. She achieved distinctions academically, chose the science stream he's doing, worked diligently in the lab and even started dressing in traditional outfits every other day. But nothing seemed to have done the trick!
This man is hell bent on keeping things professional, so much so, she's surprised he even remembers her name. She remembered back to when she first saw him receiving his certificate three years ago and it was love at first sight for her. It started off very mild with her just staring at him to her heart's content when time permit. Then to her luck, she got appointed as his lab technician assistant and tried her best in gaining his attention in every possible way. Everyone around her caught onto her efforts for him. Everyone except the one she's in love with.
Giving a disappointed sigh, she walked over to her workstation and began with the day's work. It's a different thing her entire mind was focused on a certain spectacled guy to whom her existence didn't matter.
Half an hour later, Anubhav received a phone call and Akriti watched him listen as the person on line done most of the talking. Anubhav just replied with a yes here and there and cut the call before he began collecting the printed sheets and stapling them together. Akriti was curious to know whose call it was that made Anubhav's lips tilt into a small, yet genuine, smile.
"Sir, are you heading somewhere?" She couldn't help but ask as she saw him collect the report, with his bag swung around shoulder, just about to head out.
"Yes, Ms Saxena. I, however, do expect you to be done with the rest of your work. See you later." Anubhav wanted to outright ignore her, but thought otherwise for she was his future wife's sister and as annoying as she'd been the past few days, his values didn't allow him to act rude with anyone- especially his colleagues.
After he filed the previous day's reports in the data room, he made his way to the institute's cafe, his mind playing the phone call he received barely 10 minutes back. It was Gungun who called him and from the sound of it, sounded annoyed. He sighed wondering what he'd done now, yet a part of him was excited to be meeting her after two whole days.
After the dining table incident, where the two exchanged glasses of water, Gungun had been playing on his mind- rather very much unhealthily and he couldn't pinpoint why. He smiled remembering the genuine smile Gungun cast his way that day, which was probably a first, and felt his heart leap in joy for reasons his mind couldn't decipher.
The two days without her turned him into a lovesick Romeo and he hated every bit of it! He wasn't like this at all. He hardly spared girls a second glance, having one invading his mind continuously was too farfetched- yet it's the latter that'd exactly happened. He had been replaying the feeling of her in his arms, and trust him when he said it felt like heaven had dropped itself in his arms that day. Her petite frame fit just right in his embrace- as if she was made to be locked in his arms permanently. Every time his phone rang, he'd rush to it with hopes of Gungun calling him, only to sulk in disappointment at it being anyone, and everyone, but her. Every time the door bell rang, he'd discretely walk to the staircase hoping it'd be Gungun, only for him to spin on his heels and walk back to his room, and violently shut the bedroom door, if one may add.
He didn't know what was happening to him; he was completely alien to it. And even as his rational mind rebuked him for acting like the Idiot Gungun once called him, his heart and soul accepted the change... rather too happily.
Entering the little eating area, his eyes immediately travelled across the entire canteen before it rested on her seated form on the corner-most table. She had a huge glass of vanilla milkshake right before her, and she toyed with the straw as she impatiently waited for him. He chuckled seeing her lips pucker into an adorable pout, then sighed taking in how exceptionally beautiful she looked in the beige jumpsuit, with her hair half up-done.
Admit it bro, you've started feeling something for her.
Don't listen to this idiot. It's nothing. What you think you're feeling is nothing. Just your imagination.
Don't poke your nose in our business.
Get your eyes checked. I'm his mind. His mind hasn't got a nose, rather brains.
Well with the stupidity coming from you, I doubt your department even has the required 'brains'. And while we're at this mini Biology class that you started, I'm his heart, I got no eyes.
"Will you two keep your mouths shut?" Anubhav heaved a frustrated sigh. The two girls seated by the table just beside him, and who were animatedly talking about whatever it is girls of that age talk about, stopped and gave him confused looks.
"Any problem, Mr Kulshreshth?" One asked and Anubhav gave an embarrassed smile before shaking his head in negation and rushed to where Gungun was.
"So, why did you call me?"
"Mr Tameez, I thought you had enough tameez to know you usually greet the person and ask how they're doing. That's what normal people with tameez do." Gungun gave a tight-lipped smile, "but wait, neither are you normal, nor do you have tameez- so forget it."
Can this Khadoos Kulshreshth not talk lovingly, for once?
"Listen, I haven't come here to listen to your nonsense, I genuinely have lots of work to finish off."
"Haan, so I also have work to do." Gungun defended, narrowing her eyes.
Anubhav raised an eyebrow before he began, "Which is why you're here to loiter around?"
"I'm here to talk business! Tell me, why didn't you give a reply to my message?"
"Listen, I was working in the lab, not playing phone-phone," he gave a pointed look before he continued defensively, "And I think it's better I didn't read the message or reply to it. You'd have again refused sending it and we would've fought."
"But this time I genuinely did message you." She almost whined, but remembered last minute they were at his institute's cafe.
"Why did you message me anyway?"
"I've been looking through Indian wear catalogues and couldn't choose what to buy for the engagement. There were so many options to choose from, so many colours- I got really confused."
"You wanted my opinion for your dress? My opinion- as in mine?" He looked at her with a mixture of shock and amusement working its way on his visage.
"I-I did ask Boo who, in turn, told me to ask you for your opinion." She almost stuttered. She would, in no way, admit he was the first person to have crossed her mind when she was confused with what outfit to buy for their engagement.
A wedding she initially dreaded. She was now excited for the different rituals of the wedding she initially dreaded. She loved shopping, as it is. Yet, this time, as she looked through the designer's virtual catalogue on her laptop, She couldn't help but think from Anubhav's point of view. What would he want her wear? If he even had any preference- which colour would he love to see her in, which type of outfit would he want her to wear, did she need to include heavy or light jewellery?
She was confused, herself, by her very own behaviour. Yes, Gungun was someone who strived for perfection when it came to looks, because that was her only source of confidence. But, now as she scrolled through the catalogue, she strived for one thing- and that was to look beautiful in Anubhav's eyes. And, for the sake of her mind's sanity, don't ask her why.
The past two days, for her, were spent in cooking lessons by her Boo. Gungun herself wasn't a bad cook, she cooked decent dishes. And if you ask about healthy deserts and cakes? Then famous bakers from around the world would kill to be her student. But according to her aunt, the girl needed to learn a few elaborate dishes and Gungun couldn't help but wonder why it was the girls that were made to polish their cooking and household chores. If you look at it with a practical mind- she was going to get married, not enter a cooking contest.
Well besides the point, if she'd done anything apart from cooking in those two days, it was miss her Chant Chashmish. Yes! She, Gungun Bhatnagar, missed Mr Scientist Of The Year- she missed their banters, she missed that slight smirk his lips would often tilt into whenever she'd lose an argument, she missed the spark she felt in her heart every time they talked- okay ,argued- she simply missed being around him. She'd often check her phone for any messages or missed calls from Anubhav, only for her to frown on seeing her call log consisting of every name possible but that of Anubhav. Hell, even America's president would call her, but Anubhav Chant Chashmish Scientist Ajeeb Praani Idiot Khadoos Kulshreshth?
Never.
She didn't know what was happening and why. She knew what was happening with her happened with those in love. Was she, by any chance, in love with Anubhav? Ewww, no way! She? In love? That too with Chant Chashmish?
Puh-lease!
Her reverie was broken by Anubhav snapping his fingers, who tilted his head upwards in question of what she was thinking. She simply shook her head and began sipping from the straw only to realise the contents of the glass were empty and she mentally rolled her eyes at her absentmindedness. Anubhav's lips curved upwards into an amused smile thinking what it was that was going on with his Papa Ki Pari.
He cleared his throat, hoping Gungun wouldn't flip at him for his suggestion, "Umm, if you don't mind, can I buy you your engagement dress?"
Her eyes immediately sat on him, as her features gave out her amusement. She had never allowed anyone to shop for her, except her designer friend Sarah. Even when going shopping with Boo, it'd usually be Gungun picking out outfits for both of them. Yet what Anubhav suggested now didn't sound blasphemous; instead, her heart wanted to scream an excited yes. At her lack of answer for almost two minutes, Anubhav mistook her silence and was about to take back his idea when Gungun said something he thought, and believed he knew, she wouldn't in a million years.
"I'd love you to do my engagement shopping."
Before his mind could register the shock he received at her answer and the way she worded it, a thought struck his mind and his face fell, "no- I-I don't think it'll be a good idea."
"Why is that?"
"Look, Gungun, I'm not saying this to mock you or anything, but you've lived all your life in riches. You've worn clothes whose half its quoted price goes for its famous brand-name only. I won't be able to afford a designer outfit for you for the engagement. And in no way would I want to spoil whatever wishes you may have had for your engagement dress. I was stupid to have even suggested this in the first place."
He gave a fake laugh and was about to get up from his chair, when she held his hand, keeping it back on the table. She noticed how their thumbs involuntarily interlaced, but now, that was beside the point. She caught the disappointment in his voice and the shallowness in his laughter and she felt her stomach drop for reasons she didn't know, "Did I say I have a problem with a simple, non-designer outfit? I didn't, right? Then why do you assume I won't like what you'll buy just because it won't be as expensive as the clothes I'm used to wearing?"
"We come from a society and live in a world that's run on money, speaks money, gives respect to money. I wear branded and designer items only because its price boosts my confidence. I know that the love, attention and respect I receive from my friends are only because I portray myself to be the rich and sophisticated girl, through the clothes I wear, the expensive parties I throw and the car I drive in. People gauge your monetary status through your clothes and the higher the status, the more appreciated you are.
I am a girl whose self-confidence has been played with because of her past and its repercussions- and I find my confidence in materialistic things like this. So I don't not wear inexpensive clothes because I'm a haughty girl, rather because my broken confidence demands it. It doesn't mean I'll mock or look down at someone whose outfit costs less than Rs 500. Branded or not branded, at the end of the day, they serve the same purpose. I have no problem with anything you buy, because it'll be bought by you. And your given gift will be much more valuable than any designer's clothe."
She didn't know where she got the confidence from for that mini confession, but it felt good to have said those words, out loud. She would, in no way, make Anubhav feel his choice will be downgraded by her because of its low cost. In fact, she'll consider herself the luckiest to be given a gift by him, and what better start than the engagement dress?
Anubhav, on the other hand, sat shock-still at everything she said just now. He didn't know his Papa Ki Pari had such a deep hidden side to her. A part of him felt guilty for all those times he judged her, while another felt happy that she found him capable enough of sharing her life's secrets with. The two were so lost in their almost perfect moment when they heard throats being cleared and they turned to face the intruders- this time both their facial expressions morphed into irritation.
"I never knew such a day would come where we'd get to see our sanskaari Scientist Of The Year on a date with a beautiful girl." Anubhav's colleague, Yash, remarked. Along with him, came Kunal, Jasmine and Akriti. "By the way, I like how progressive Anubhav has become. One, a girlfriend and two, publicly resting their entwined hands on the table. Not bad, my friend."
They immediately pulled backs their hands, hearing his remark. Unable to control his stubborn lips from tilting upwards, Anubhav looked the other way to regain his composure as his ears turned light pink; while Gungun looked at anywhere but Anubhav and his group of friends and colleagues.
Kebab mein haddiya.
"So, will you do the honours of introducing your girlfriend?" Kunal asked as they, excluding Akriti, sat on the remaining chairs of the table.
Anubhav gave him a pointed look, before he introduced the two, "guys, this is Gungun, my fiancée. And Gungun this is-"
"I'm Kunal."
"Yash here."
"I'm Jasmine. It's a pleasure meeting you."
Gungun looked at them, surprise contorting her features at how outgoing Anubhav-The-Introvert's friends were. She wondered how her husband ever became friends with them.
"Hi! Nice meeting you all too!" She waved at the group, giving the sweetest smile.
"Well, in celebration of meeting our bhabi, you have to give us a treat, Anu." Yash spoke while the others agreed, "If not anything elaborate, at least snacks from the canteen."
"Yes! You still do owe us a treat for winning the award."
Anubhav tilted his face to his side as he raised an eyebrow before asking Gungun, "Will you be staying back?"
"Yeah." She casually shrugged her shoulders not showing her enthusiasm on having her first ever meal with her future husband. Sure, she'd eaten at his place and he was invited to her birthday party, but the two had never eaten together and this was a milestone in their relationship. For the girl who didn't give much attention to small stuff, Gungun sure was keeping tabs of the minutest details of their relationship arc.
"So someone's already started asking their wife's opinion on small things?" Kunal cleared his throat while Akriti grit her teeth in annoyance. Why was it that Gungun somehow became the centre of attention every time and everywhere!?
"I just wanted to know if she needs to go anywhere or not," Anubhav cleared the air before his colleagues came up with more cooked pulavs, "and because this is our wedding treat, I figured she needs to be part of the little celebration too."
"We can read between the lines, A.Nu.Bhav." Yash teased punctuating his name making Gungun give a small smile, and Anubhav shook his head with a sigh.
"Sooo Bhabi, when did you meet Anubhav for the first time?" Yash asked after Kunal and Anubhav walked away to place their order.
Gungun smiled as her mind reeled back to barely two months back when they'd met at the threshold of her house. Funny how she remembered everything so vividly about that day, that it'll easily play like a movie before her eyes. Her smile widened thinking how she mistook him to be a creep and was about to beat him with the umbrella.
Pagal Ladki!
"Bhabi, will you keep smiling to yourself or even tell us anything?" Yash interrupted her walk-down the day she'd unknowingly begun to treasure, and Jasmine giggled to Yash's statement while Akriti rolled her eyes getting agitated by every second that passed. Gungun, good naturedly rolled her eyes, before going on to narrate the happenings of the day as her lips involuntarily curved upwards.
"... and that's how we met." She finished as the other two chuckled followed.
Gungun, who had begun enjoying herself in the presence of Anubhav's colleagues, happened to look at her cousin who had a permanent scowl plastered on her face. She didn't know how long she stared at Akriti to make it obvious for the others that Yash spoke-
"Akriti, won't you introduce yourself to Anubhav's future wife?"
"Hi Gungun." Akriti gave a look that spoke menace, "We've met before."
"Really? Where?"
"At the award ceremony." Gungun answered Jasmine's question, "and, I do know Akriti Di from when we were kids. She's my cousin."
"That's... news." Jasmine, who kind of knew what Akriti felt for Anubhav, commented. The last thing she wanted to witness was a cat fight between two sisters.
"Oh wait- is Gungun the one your mum's looking after?" Yash, not being the one to beat around the bush, asked and Gungun slightly narrowed her eyes wondering what and how much she'd told them.
"Yeah. She's been her guardian from the time Gungun's own mother left. Right, Gungun?" Akriti gave a sardonic smile. It was as if something had suddenly possessed her and before her mind could register what her tongue uttered, she continued,
"By the way, I must salute Anubhav Sir's courage. For agreeing to get married to a girl who's most likely to leave him just like how her mum did. After all jaisi ma, vaisi beti, right?"
Akriti's statement left a varied of emotions. While Jasmine and Yash grew uncomfortable at the sudden turn of events, Gungun stiffened at her place as her cousin so easily insulting her in front of her husband's friends. She rapidly blinked back her tears and turned her gaze to her side. She couldn't believe the girl who was her cousin and the only thing closest to a sister in relation could harbour hatred enough to humiliate her in front of others.
Jaisi ma, vaisi beti.
The words rang in her ears, and even if we forget the menace in her voice, the words itself were enough to hit her right where it hurt the most. She couldn't believe she was made to hear something she hadn't in quite a while. Why was she the one being judged and blamed for something her mother did?
Akriti looked at Gungun, and a satisfactory smile played on her lips. That Gungun deserved every bit of humiliation her way. What she done was nothing. Her smirk, however, didn't last too long for her eyes fell on the one person who shouldn't have heard what she just said.
Behind Gungun, stood Anubhav with a tray in his hand, whose eyes were transfixed on the woman who made his lady cry. He casted a look her way so cold, the intensity of his icy orbs would, without a doubt, bring about frostbite. And Akriti shivered as her intuition warned her of Anubhav's anger. The four walls of the institute's canteen that witnessed almost every shade of Anubhav Kulshreshth was now going to witness his anger too.
Fun fact: There was more to this part but the story literally exceeded 3500 words!
Spoiler for next part? The day (and night's) gonna be pretttyy long!😉
