He came, he fell down, stood up and finally conquered the Everest...
The box office run of 'The Kashmir Files' can be easily summarized by above line. Its norm in Bollywood circle, unless you make it big, no one will give damn about you. Starting from copycat movies like Chocolate (The Usual Suspects), aping Hollywood fem-me fatal's like Hate Story, Zid he finally cracked it with 'The Tashkent Files' which was a sleeper hit, despite terrible initial reviews and box office collection. Even 'Buddha In the Traffic' had some signs of his divergence from regular glossy Hollywood copycat signatures.
But, The Kashmir Files did something rare which has never been done in the Bollywood in last few decades. The movie which had mere 4 Cr. opening day collection went on to register itself into 200 Cr. club. Definitely, Fact is sometimes stranger than Fiction. The kind of collection graph was something that was never been heard of in past few decades. Only movie which had similar run in Box office in recent past is the 1975 released movie 'Jai Santoshi Maa' which stood tall against movies like Sholay & Deewar in the same year.
So, why people choose to watch hard hitting, gruesome, violent drama over lovy-dovy 'Radhe Shyam' or comedy caper masala 'Bacchan Pandey' ?
Has taste of audience really changed post pandemic ?
Has audience grown intelligent enough to decipher between crap and true good cinema ?
There are many such questions, which still cannot be answered. But, its fact that taste of audience keeps on changing. Today they may like deep dark drama, but tomorrow when RRR releases they will once again flock to theater to celebrate with South Indian Mega Movie.
But now one thing has been cleared if the movie is good, then NO PAID CRITICS or Social media influencers can stop it from becoming a super-hit, likewise if it is crap then no matter how much money the makers pour in for marketing, promotion or social media influencers it will eventually fall within first few days itself.
All I can say is 'The Kashmir Files' is an incident which happens only once in a blue moon... Kabhie Kabhie... now there is huge burden upon Vivek to make 'The Delhi Files' much bigger success than 'The Kashmir Files'.
