It's hardly an Indian invention. Dowry used to be given by the British Aristocracy too back in the old days. Even Bombay was given as dowry to England on behalf of a Portuguese princess. Where the English differ from us is that everything used to get nicely written and legal. About how much of the dowry/ property should come back to the girl if she becomes a widow. Also how much of the girl's dowry should go to her younger children. That's because in their country the eldest son of an aristocrat inherits almost everything from the father. So provisions had to be made for daughters and younger sons at the time of the wedding of parents itself.

Dowry encompasses the Indian traditional values. We should respect them.

If the girl's parents agree for it, the girl doesn't and can't reject in most cases.

Close to 7000 dowry deaths occurred in 2020 alone. It's nothing but a social evil driven chiefly by greed and misogyny that dehumanizes the girl and her family. It's a form of glorified begging.

Btw, mention dowry evils on SM platforms and hundreds of triggered MCPs will jump in with ridiculously laughable equivalences like alimony and salary packages. 😆
