Mahashivratri is a Hindu festival held every year to commemorate the Hindu God, Lord Shiva, he is the destroyer who ends the cycle of time which, in turn, begins a new creation. This day falls in the month of Phalguna as per the Hindu calendar and celebrates the struggle to beat darkness and ignorance both in life and the world.

It is associated with different legends. This is said to be the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction, according to a Shaivism legend. Another legend points to this as the night Shiva and Parvati were married. Alternatively, there is a legend that says lingam offerings are made annually to atone for past sins, to start on a virtuous path, and ultimately reach Mount Kailasha and liberation.

The night of Mahashivratri is believed to be a time when the cosmic flow of energy is high, thus many people meditate that day to increase their focus and attention. Devotees sing hymns and chant mantras, some also mediate and fast throughout the day, afterwards hold a vigil all night. Observances include Poojas and Abhishekas at temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, which are filled with offerings. Observing the Mahashivratri fast for the entire night is said to help remove negative thoughts such as anger, greed and hate.

Here’s Crazy Creatives wishing you all a happy Mahashivratri. May Mahadev bless you with good health and prosperity!
