One book that I really liked and that was feel-good but not in a sappy way was Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Part of the plot involves a fangirl obsession that might seem familiar...

I find now I can only read light works if I'm going in for fiction.. Anything heavy, political, social issues etc., or stuff that has any gore and all I don't want.. I just am not able to handle it.. Even movies and serials.. It must mean that I miss out on most of the best works but 🤷‍♀️

And contemporary these days all has just this kind of content.. So I don't know what to recommend you.

I stick to the oldies, they are more sensitive 😬 and whatever I read of contemporary is just chick lit.. There now you know my vice! ☺️

The Year of Magical Thinking just left me a sobbing mess but what a book!

I liked White Teeth but On Beauty didn't resonate with me as much. Apparently she was inspired by EM Forster's Howards End which is also one of my favorite books.

Lol. I just go to get some things done for 10 minutes and there are already so many pages gone by. 😆

I love reading Zadie Smith. On Beauty is really funny. I love the way it makes fun of academia. Joan Didion is amazing yes.

OH!! What a fantastic idea! I read the one on Draupadi - it was great.
Have you read any Madeline Miller - she rewrites Greek mythology from the point of view of the 'evil' women. Like "Circe".

I wouldn't be able to read them in the original (actually my dirty secret is I cannot read or write very well in Devanagri script despite my parents hiring tutors to teach me for years...). I have read some of Saadat Hassan Manto's short stories.

oh I didn’t know they are based on books probably that’s why they are better than Indian shows

Oh my God, talking of Indian shows... Two years ago, I started watching Saraswatichandra which is supposedly based on a novel but I could not stand the male lead. Although that led to my watching Bepannah because Jennifer Winget was so pretty and charming in it. Had to stop watching the show though - clearly they went left of the novel pretty soon🤣
