I think the small-town/desi rom-com trend started with Band Baaja Baarat in 2010. If you see the film today, it might not seem like anything extraordinary but at that time it felt like a breath of fresh air to see the lead pair coming from humble backgrounds, who dressed normally, looked sweaty and talked in local accents.
Anyway, coming to the question, Choose one from each category:
Namastey London vs Luka Chupi
Band Baaja Baarat vs Anjana Anjani
If majority end up choosing the first option, the answer is: both subgenres can be equally good, it depends on story, direction, acting, chemistry etc.
Maybe but Band Baaja Baraat was set in Delhi, not a small town and there's a three years gap between BBB and Raanjhanaa.
Raanjhanaa was also a much bigger Hit compared to BBB.
I'd take Hum Tum and Salaam Namaste over all these wannabe quirky small town crap.
2010 small town film Dabangg

Correct, but while it may have been set in the Capital, the characters were far from upper class or "Raj" and "Priya" types- but more like underdogs in the city- they had the feel of small town characters, struggling and doing "jugaad" to make it in the city. The song in BBB "tarkeebein" is based precisely on this struggle of Bittoo and Shruti's.
This in itself was pretty refreshing because till then the main characters in big budget or Yashraj type films were usually shown as yuppie types. But this was followed by films like Rocket Singh, Shudh Desi Romance and yes, Raanjhana, which was of course a massive hit.

Delhi is small town?? š
No. But what I meant was the mileau of middle class India. Look at Sashay01's post above yours. They explain it perfectly.
