Part 3 - Dhadkan
It was only about an hour ago that Aryan had seen Imlie sneak into the godown. He muttered curses under his breath as he saw her duck behind a few barrels. Why did his wife always manage to make her way to dangerous places like this? What was she? Superwoman?
Aryan had deliberately kept her away from this stupid assignment. Knowing her, she would be picking up a gun and running through a shower of bullets, why? Because she was bloody reckless!
Making sure no one else spotted Imlie, he tugged her towards himself.
“What were you thinking?” He whisper yelled “Walking into this godown like that?”
“What was I thinking!?” She responded equally riled up
“You” she said digging her index finger into his chest “You are the one who decided to waltz into an arms deal alone, and then broke contact with your team, and now you have the audacity to question me?”
Aryan rolled his eyes. She really wouldn’t ever leave a chance to argue with him would she? Pulling her down to crouch behind a stack of boxes and barrels, he continued.
“Why are you here Imlie?” He asked, half exasperated and half shocked that two of them were arguing in the midst of an arms deal.
“To save you!” Imlie exclaimed as if it were a blatantly obvious fact.
“I am no damsel in distress to need saving!” Aryan responded almost insulted at her answer.
“But I want to be your knight in shining armour… happy?” Imlie replied sarcastically. This man had the bandwidth to look offended after getting himself stuck in such a position.
Aryan sighed
“You need to leave Imlie”
“I am not going anywhere without you.” Imlie said with a finality in her voice.
“I am fine, I will be out in the next 30 minutes. Please go” He was now almost begging. Imlie’s stubborn nature was no secret, and neither was her recklessness. If she stayed with him, he would be more worried about her than being able to finish his job quickly.
Imlie only shook her head, and Aryan’s already pounding heart became even more erratic. He ran a frustrated hand through his hair and sighed. He knew arguing with her was pointless.
“Fine. But you stay here and you stay put.”
Imlie nodded vigorously. As long as she was with him, and she knew that he was fine. She was happy. But if something happened, the last thing she was going to do is stay put. But she lost nothing in nodding and so she did.
Aryan nodded once in acknowledgement
“Good” He said before ducking away

Imlie no longer knew what was happening. It was all too fast and it was all too much. One moment she was behind the boxes trying to see where Aryan was hiding and the next moment the room had descended into chaos.
Bullets were flying from random directions and she had no idea where Aryan was. As she tried to make sense of the chaos a hand seized her wrist and she went crashing into someone's chest. The overwhelmingly familiar scent of mint and sweat made her lean into his touch.
“Don’t move” His voice was clipped, a whisper, a chill in her spine. His lips brushed against her hair as he pushed her face further into his chest. The other arm around her waist secured her against him.
Her eyes momentarily fluttered close, the only thing she heard was his heart beats racing, his deep breaths and his-
Her eyes flew open as she felt his body jerk against hers. She struggled to move out of his embrace but his grip on her only tightened.
The same movement again and this time with a sharp exhale. She fought harder against him as tears sprung up in her eyes.
And again the same movement accompanied with the low grunt of pain. She fought harder to see, she fought harder to move and yet she failed. She needed to know that what she was thinking was wrong. She needed to know that he was fine. But he wouldn’t let her move, he wouldn’t let her see.
With a surge of determination she pushed away from him, and this time he let go. He staggered back with one hand flying to his rib while the other broke his fall as he went to his knees. He leaned forward coughing.
And in that moment, Imlie’s world came crashing down.

He had taken three bullets saving her. Her eyes widened in horror as she saw him fall to the floor.
“AAAARYAAAANNNNN!!!!!”
The blood curdling cry of despair reverberated through the now silent godown. Imlie sank to her knees beside him.
Her hands reached his face as she stroked his cheek with her thumb.
“Aryan - Aryan. Listen to me Aryan!” She said, patting the side of his face. Carefully she lifted his head and placed it on her lap.
His eyes fluttered open and she finally breathed a little. His eyes were bloodshot red, as a lone tear trickled down his cheeks. He stared up at her, smiling, his eyes alight with not hope but triumph. The brown orbs darker with not fear but understanding.
Both of them knew Imlie was clinging onto the last thread of hope. Trying to save him was a lost cause. But she wouldn’t give up. He never gave up on her. How could she? How could she turn her back when her world was crumbling right before her eyes. She had to try, she had to fight.
“Im-mlie” he choked. Her eyes drew shut as she relished the sound of her name.
“Please” she pleaded. She didn’t know to whom, or to what. But she begged, she begged to whoever was listening.
“Please don’t die on me Aryan… please. Give me this last thing won’t you?” She said as tears continued to trickle down her cheeks.
She could hear him struggling to breathe. His breathing was ragged and shallow. Imlie closed her eyes not being able to see him struggle. She leaned forward, her nose touching his.
Her eyes still closed as she felt his hot breath fan her. She knew it was now or never, she couldn’t have him leave not knowing how she felt.
“I love you Aryan… please don’t go” she managed to let out before breaking into sobs. She waited, she waited for some kind of answer, for some kind of acknowledgement. But the only answer was the loss of heat. His breath no longer fanned her face.
