Long answer: That's because they choose to stay in the past just because there were happy times as well.
You could have the sun, moon and stars in the early phases of your marriage but if it turns abusive in the following years, you can't continue with it by just holding on to the happier times. I mean, yes, you should take the happy times into consideration and try to hold on to those when you're trying to work and get back those or similar times in the present – which Imlie has tried her best to do.
If after that also, the dynamics don't change, you can't expect her to stay in the marriage and continue giving up her sanity, hopes, dreams, confidence, etc. just because there were happy times once upon a time, just because she meant the world to him once upon a time, just because he was the best human in her life once upon a time.
He may have been the best for her once upon a time but has now turned the worst. So if she now finds someone who is even good or better, not even the best, you can't expect her to not settle for the good or better just because she had the best and should only stick to that even though that's become worst now.
