Besides, Aditya more or less treated her like a girl (cheek taps, etc) in their best moments and berated her / ridiculed or caste aside her POV as if she were a petulant teenage girl.

It’s also interesting that in the later phases of their marriage, she’s actively brushed away nearly all romantic moments herself. She never entertained them and “chiiii” was more or less her default response to suggested romance / intimacy. So whatever it was - it was brief, a phase. And it was over even before Aryan entered their lives.

With Aryan, it’s different coz he treats her as a woman…and as an equal. And she responds like one too. I see the potential for her to blossom and hopefully her new found awareness about their proximity is something she reflects on as days go by.

I have not gone back to watch the older episodes, I started only after Aryan's entry and I did wonder what her equation with Aditya was like. I may her seen some older clips of Imlie and Aditya and did not get any romantic vibes either. So thank you pointing this out, I figured this was a teenage crush sort of situation for Imlie as well. 😉

I was reading something about the female gaze today and was thinking of how in film theory, the camera itself is considered to be a voyeuristic male gaze. Consider this:

It's one of the most breathtaking and even 'sexy' scenes I have ever seen, but at the end of the day, it's male consumption of the female body, it's voyeuristic.

If we look at European art analysis, many people hold that the female nude body was painted with the gaze of the audience in mind— which was automatically assumed to be the cishet white male.

On the other hand, if you read medieval European poetry, gazing was considered the first step to pyas. It wasn't just sin to have sex, but gazing itself was an act of pleasure, deriving and satisfying sexual desire, romantic love. You could also look at scopophilia where the inherent shame of looking at someone is overcome by the pleasure derived from it. (Think p-rn on a very crude level).

Thing is there's ample archive of heroes looking/appreciating/loving/objectifying/desiring women in media. That's how women characters are shown. Zoom in on eyes. Zoom in on lips. Zoom in on the buttocks. Even when it's more novel and full of love like Aru's cute lag rahi ho scene, men get that freedom to openly gaze.

The narrative just tells us that the woman is attracted to the man, but it's never actually shown. I think of how the shots of abs and biceps of ml are shown in movies but only to establish their alphaness (smiley11).

I can only think of this scene where Khushi for the first time explicitly shows sexual desire for her husband, his physicality. I love this scene. The camera follows Khushi's gaze here. The biceps, the sweat, the water dripping down his hair and face.

I don't know if Imlie ever showed any such joy of looking for Aditya. I remember her getting affected by Adini's PDA in the initial episodes.

But she gets affected by (barely atm) by Aru's physical presence. She gets enchanted by him for a few seconds and pulls her out of it.

I hope they use the female gaze as their relationship progresses.

Tagging people I could remember indulging me on the og post. Jhelo mujhe

ITV shows just don't consider the female gaze or sexuality and if they do (such as some web series) then they make it quite vulgar by skipping intimacy completely. I understand that they have to cater to the wider culture; when in Rome and all that but to behave as if it's completely non-existent is to negate a very basic human trait.

Gul is especially notorious for playing on the tropes of the naïve, innocent, virginal heroine and the aggressive, dominating, more experienced hero. She can get away with it here due to Imlie's age but at the same time, Imlie is pretty open-minded for the type of environment she hails from. As you and others have mentioned, when it came to Aditya, she was always in awe of him. It was less love and desire and more of a crush. The type that when you look back on after time, you realize how dumb you were thanks to your still developing brain. Aryan may be a far more accomplished man than Aditya but she treats Aryan as an equal because he allows her to (as he should, unlike BS), he indulges her, and he gives importance to her opinions. With BS there was this, I don't know, sort of fear, like the kind you feel in front of authority that you look up to so her physical responses reflected that. Imlie is at ease with Aryan so her physical reactions are more prominent but not conscious. If they continue in this manner then incorporating the female gaze would be very organic; innocuous to the general audience thus acceptable to them.

My favourite PH is probably the only one that gets close to showing the female gaze and they do it in the most natural manner either by showing the FL actually noticing the ML's physical traits or by passing a comment about the ML's appearance in such a nonchalant manner, like it's so normal (which it is).

I have read folks saying Aryan is dominant. Aditya is a true one — who does dictate terms with two women not just one, and gets away with it coz of his hollow words spoken with such conviction / empty rosy promises…and the strikingly patriarchal atmosphere in T-house.

Yes! Janmastami night / following morning has shaken and scarred her badly. The girl practically guarded his bedroom the entire night only to see what she saw the morning after.

1. Aditya never acknowledged her perspective

2. Aditya never made adequate amends to ease her

3. Aditya was keen on moving ahead with their marital relationship and kept pushing her to as well (without 1 or 2 ++ sustained pregnant Malini’s presence)

4. And yes, the fact that she rejected him but cozies with another man makes Aditya see red. That’s his entire gripe. Hence his disgusting remarks and calling her a butterfly.

Coz he was continually rejected and didn’t get what he wanted….. (starting from PD3 where he says I want to spend time with you and Imlie brushes him off saying I ain’t spending two minutes with you…go home to the wife you willingly married)

Pathetic man, really.

Oh man, everything you said here🔥. The truth comes out in context.

Right? Like she has too. She included Aryan in her resolution for sakes. He was so blinded by her including Aditya he didn't notice. I think it's subconscious like you've said before. But she's not going to express it the way Aryan expresses, so I think that will be a point of tension.

I still can't get over the fact that while Aditya is on a high risk assignment, Imlie is here partying it up with Aryan. I think some of the speculation surrounding no PD for Imlie this time is true. Watch them bring in new Aditya and continue carrying on this story just this way. With Imlie caught between her conscious (responsibility towards Aditya and his family) and subconscious (growing feelings for Aryan).

For Imlie, Aryan and Aditya are separate, just like for Aryan his revenge against Aditya and his feelings for Imlie are separate. They'll be at a stalemate maybe, and we'll just watch it all go down 😆
