Because India was an underdog in cricket World during those days. Nobody thought India would have reached semi finals, let alone win the whole thing.

WI were absolute favourites despite the loss in group stage, which was seen more of as a shock rather than norm. They topped the group, were the winner of last two World cups, were the best ODI team in the world by some distance.
