Lol no, SLB is a master of details. When he has chosen ARH it is in fact, to contrast her as the pale, submissive Meherunissa, the one who cowers in front of her Sultaan, to the dusky fiery glow of DP’s Padmavati. It wasn’t a coincidence 😆. That’s the way I interpret it, seeing his earlier movies.

To me DP looked very beautiful but I do agree that her eyes weren’t as mesmerising as Padma as they are even in an average movie. But she was still so beautiful.

Nice perspective if you think that way.

But same can be said about Kashi Bai and mastani. Their Kashi Bai stood out in her dusky fiery glow inspite of a fair decked up Mastani 😆

Its the performance and aura am talking about not to forget the awful makeup choices.

Now that you say this if I keep my Padmavati admiration aside ( I am big admirer of her, had read one poem in childhood which made my expectations high )

I feel Mehrunnisa's plight touching. Married to the love of your life who turns out to be the devil and murderer of your father... Silenced in the name of power... She had to keep her mouth shut and only let her eyes speak and how her eyes shone with unshed tears and so much hidden pain. Finally takes action against her husband. A pretty good performance and character arc.

No I do not think so.

Deepika looked ethereal in Padmavati and deffo better than Aditi.

OSO and Padmavati are the films where DPad looked her best.

Sorry to say but I think people find Aditi more beautiful only due to her fairer skin. I do not think she otherwise has any gorgeous features.

Bhansali gave time to Khilji to demonise him further. He was under pressure after that attack on him. Rajput outfits had given him ultimatum on dos and donts regarding how the queen will be shown which is why he even covered Deepika's waist in Ghoomar song after controversy.

Also, there is very little material available on Padmavati in history except one epic poem. So not much to detail beyond a limit for the queen.

There was rivalry between senior queen and Padmavati but protesters got those scenes removed as well because they did not want 'badi rani' to be 'insulted' either.

Padmavati is choppy as a film thanks to pressure SLB had after all attacks and protests.

Whenever I saw the film I felt SLB wanted to cover lot of stuff but left threads loose after protests.

I feel nothing for Aditi character in it. Padmavati's plight and resolve are highlight. Whether her beauty blamed for attacks on her kingdom, her resolve to get her husband freed from jail or the final decision to commit jauhar to not let invading army even touch or see her.

Historically there is more material available on Khilji than Padmavati and Ranveer had to be shown more of a loathsome villain hence more focus on Khilji. SLB wanted to convince protesters he had not glorified Khilji because they suspected SLB will glorify Khilji casting a mainstream hero like Ranveer or show Khilji-Padmavati love story by casting real life couple in this role. Hence those extra baddie scenes for Khilji.

Well Mastani was in fact, as a fact, half- Persian 😆 so that is correct. She had to be shown as white but since there is no-one as beautiful as the dark DP, hence all the glutathione injections DP rumouredly took to become Mastani. 😆

I was watching clips of Padmavati past few days (viral does that) and being a Rajput, was very amused how the Rajputs were reverently shown. I did notice how understated & well ARH performed! She was very good. Really should be taken for more movies.

After all those attacks and slander, threats for whole cast, SLB had to show Rajputs reverentially. Poor guy must have sworn his hands off period films after that.

BTW I dislike SLB's sticking to only his favs.

He should have used authentic voices like Ila Arun and Sapna Awasthi to show Rajasthani folk songs in Padmavat. Yet he stuck to same Shreya Ghoshal and co.

In contrast you gotta admire Yash Chopra for using voice of Ila Arun in Rajasthani folk portions of songs in Lamhe set in Rajasthan.

Agreed on Khilji having more importance infact he was given so much coverage that it over shadowed the other characters.

I have read the said poem in my childhood and it had an epic status for me so I was naturally disappointed.

As you mentioned the struggle, the plight her rivalry, the jealousy, all the hurdles in her life were one way or the other coz of her beauty. She was praised for her beauty, virtue, righteousness, fiery spirit and loyalty.

Though DP is a good performer but here I find her lacking. Her visuals were not outstanding, she didn't stand out in front of elder queen. As her " Beauty" was the reason for the major war and all problem her appearance didn't look the part.

Given her stiff, rigid mannerism and the transfixed look and philosophical way of dialogue delivery.

The only scene where I got all charged up,goosebump, cold sweat was the final jauhar scene, that was worth the whole film it was so fiery and emo.

I don't know wether DP underplayed her character or as you said much imp was given to khiji theaterics. Its so disappointing when ppl most of the time rem Padmavati for khiji's deviltry and his crony Malik Kafur 🤔

Oh yeah why did they made her dusky complexion more darker. I guess it would have made great difference if they would have removed that unibrow and dark makeup.

ARH indeed great, she had done some phenomenal work in South cinema.

My hunch is that SLB reshot some portions and also deleted a lot of scenes.

So he made it all about Khilji the villain.

When I first saw it I felt it should have been named Khilji rather than Padmavat. 🤣

Ranveer was the one man show in it.

Deepika somehow did not fit in the canvas of the role. Probably due to the editing. SLB made her look reflective, even guilty for her beauty causing trouble for her husband. Deepika and Shahid were rather insipid in the film. They had no chemistry at all either.

The only solid scenes are the ones in which Khilji motivates his army to fight and uphold their flag and of course the final jauhar scene due to the background music and tension it creates.

Otherwise film is too long and sorta boring. Khilji and Malik Kafur had more chemistry than the king and queen.

Lol 😂Same feeling. The film unintentionally was one man show. Weak performances from the lead made Ranveer stand out. Much thought was put in glamorizing Khilji and his Kohl- filled eyes.

The film was a dragfest and only Khilji brought that energy.

Heck I agree Khilji and kafur had great chemistry than the leads.

its so sad that an epic film turn out to be this way.
