I am from that era. Rani was 100% more popular than Preity back in 2000s.
Even in late 90s she made more impact with KKHH and Ghulam.
Preity only got ahead in 2003 once with Koi Mil gaya and Kal Ho na Ho. Rani again got ahead with Yuva next year and absolutely hit stratosphere with Black and Bunty aur Babli in 2005. 2005 belonged to her.
Rani had universal appeal and was also critics' favorite. Preity had appeal more among younger urban audience and had only bubbly girl image. Never considered a versatile actor or actor with mass appeal.
