For an artist to be popular and iconic he or she has to appeal to masses. There is a reason why no singer has been able to match Lata, Asha, Rafi, Kishore, who were able to penetrate among masses, villages, regional cinema more than any other singer before or after them.

And songs from 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s often mirrored realities of everyday life such as unemployment, price rise, poverty, which people found meaningful, relatable.

Some old songs are still recreated and reused in ads. Mehangaai maar gayi is one such song. Papa kehte hain was reused in ads and even in later films like AAA.

Oye oye was tweaked to use it in an anti itch cream ad.

Not too long ago a hair oil ad with Asin had used Ae phoolon ki rani song as jingle.

As films, songs, lyrics became more disconnected from masses or mixed with other languages, people turned to older music or regional music more.

Today regional films and music are doing much better in states, towns and villages than Bollywood stuff which has become more urban/NRI oriented and westernised for masses who are unable to connect emotionally with it.

Cadbury had an ad with Saat Samundar Paar in it

I think there was a Nissan ad with Ranbir Kapoor in which they used Chala Jaata Hu Kisi Ki Dhun Mein

Yellow Diamond had tweaked the lyrics and tune of Ae Dil hai Mushkil Jeena Yahan

@bold: this is actually a big problem in the bigger picture because the audience has been split.

We all know kiski jali hai. That frustrated Rafi ka duplicate is nowadays only known for hate speech and YouTube rants against other composers, singers, communities.

He is jobless. Not even doing reality shows as a judge.

I never heard of that Islamophobic, communal bigot Sonu being considered versatile or iconic in Pakistan.

I bet Pakistanis do not even shit on him after his comments against Azaan and insecurity at Pakistani singers as he could not handle Atif being more popular than him in mid 2000s.

Most Pakistanis admire real Rafi and not his duplicate mimic.

the rafi ke copy had sung so many different song even in 90s which the orginal singer can never attempt to sing 😉 as it will not suite a monotonous voice :D like this

Yes plenty of ads using old songs even today and many films still remaking old songs.

It cannot be denied at all.

Anyway atleast other singers are only known for their talent as singers and not hate speech, frustrated rants or antics like dressing up as a beggar and sitting on footpath to sing.

The only other singer known for hate speech is Abhijeet who is also jobless now.
