Both are above average actors and nothing great.

But Preity tried grey shade roles like Armaan, KANK which worked well. She can do well when she wants to play a bitchy, irritated, frustrated lady.

Deepika has done more diverse roles. Preity is mostly cute, effervescent. Deepika is beautiful but not that good in comical and chirpy roles as Preity.

Preity's dialogue delivery was never as dull as Deepika.

Adding Chhapak and Bhansali's work, I think Deepika is slightly ahead of Preity.

Preity cannot do Mastani, Padmavati or Leela and Malti. Though Deepika can try and do any role Preity did.
