Is Juhi underrated?

Juhi is correctly rated.

She was one of most popular actresses of 90s and got critical acclaim for My Brother Nikhil and Gulabi Gang type films and is the only mainstream actress apart from Sridevi who is admired widely for her comic timing. Otherwise very few actresses have managed to do comedy well.

She is also admired for her cuteness and beauty.

I do not think she was ever underrated.

She is not very media savvy and neither eloquent, which may sometimes land her in controversy or make news for wrong reasons.

But otherwise she is rated right. And still gets ads, reality shows.

Rather often got more than what she deserved. Meenakshi in Damini was far more deserving of Best Actress award in 1993 than Juhi for Hum Hain Rahi Pyar ke which is just a fluffy film and character did not require much effort.

If Juhi was overtaken by other actresses later it was only due to her own poor movie choices, weak script sense and foolishness to rub some stars like Aamir and Salman the wrong way which is why Aamir never worked with her post Ishq and Salman never worked with her at all in any film.

Juhi co owns a production house and an IPL team, which keep her in limelight.

She has not disappeared like other heroines of that era. She got to do comedy in Son of Sardar also and was appreciated for it.

Never thought she was underrated.

Agree re: her poor script choices. She was also quite unwilling to go out of her comfort zone in spite of many actors and directors repeatedly saying she had the capacity. One of those people was Jaya Bachchan, who hardly ever has a kind word to say about anyone.

A CORRECTION: Salman didn't refuse to work with her. It was the other way around. Salman apparently even proposed marriage, which her father declined 😆. Smart father.

Not only that... I do not believe not being willing to put up with Amir Khan spitting on her counts as rubbing him the wrong way. In fact, I'd say good for her for not putting movie chances above self respect.

Oh is it? I did not know Salman had proposed to marry her. Wow. He went to Juhi so soon and had audacity to propose her even after leaving Sangeeta waiting at wedding venue few years before? Kamaal hai.

Glad she refused him. She is better off now and made a name for herself even despite not working with him.

I am not aware of details of Juhi and Aamir fallout. So I do not know if it was just a prank or something more than that.

Aamir was rather stuck up and moody back then and he had vowed never to work with Karishma or Naseer either after Raja Hindustani and Sarfarosh just because he did not like working with them.

Juhi blundered by rejecting so many films which later became either big hits or critically acclaimed in mid to late 90s. She herself regretted rejecting Raja Hindustani, Mrityudand, DTPH. If I am not mistaken she was offered a role in Border also but she did not/could not do it.

She never updated herself as an actor. And was often overacting in her late 90s films.

She also got pregnant during relationship with Jai Mehta and while she was still completing her films. Her marriage was rushed as she was pregnant and she came to be seen as unprofessional as she violated contract she had signed while doing films and got pregnant during making of those films.

She was really bad at handling media and PR and usually suffered due to poor choice of words in public.

A wasted potential. From someone who was once giving serious competition to Madhuri, for #1 spot, she slowly became just one of chirpy starlets of 90s.

Glad she chose better films and attempted more serious roles later.

Nope, she was in the top 3 all the way from 88 to mid 90s, and somewhere in top 5 in the late 90s as well. The reason why she could not be the undisputed number 1 was because she was sandwitched between Madz and Sri, who are 2 of the biggest superstars of Bollywood, so no Juhi or anyone could tackle them. That said, she was extremely popular with the audience all over the 90s.

No. He went to her father and asked to marry her 😆. Father was smart enough to say no.

Juhi was a limited light hearted actor trapped in cute girl image and looked like overgrown cutie in Ishq.

She rejected films like Mrityudand, Border, Raja Hindustani and DTPH. Only to do crap like Karobaar?

Her poor choices and staying in her comfort zone as actor were reason for her downfall. Kajol, Karishma easily overtook her and she was never as big as Madhuri anyway not had any hot image which is why Raveena also marched ahead of her after success of Mohra.

Sad she reduced herself to a one trick pony doing same old bubbly cute girl role from Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke to Mr and Mrs Khiladi.

She limited herself to sweet and cute roles so much which is why her Gulaabi Gang role seemed like a surprise. As an actor Juhi tried different stuff only after 2002.

Juhi's only good quality is comic timing. And she has been praised enough for it. She was not underrated. She has always got credit for whatever she did.

This is actually contradicted by many somewhat heavyweight artists. Jaya Bachchan, Amol Palekar, Rishi Kapoor... so on.

She was lazy and looked for commercial success more than artistic merit and ended up losing both.

3 Deewarein, I Am..., even the ridiculous Gulabi Gang show her talent. Problem was too little too late.

She was wasted potential. Since she did the wasting herself, can't really call her underrated.

The films you named, Juhi did them all much later post mid 2000s.

Juhi rarely stepped out of her comfort zone in 90s. Her rejecting Mrityudand and Border is biggest example of this. The former film single handedly won Madhuri and Shabana huge accolades for their acting in that film. I understand Border may have felt like a men's film to Juhi and she must have assumed there was not much for heroine to do in that film. But rejecting a solid woman dominated film like Mrityudand shows how she chickened out from doing a challenging role as an actor. She did regret not doing that film later.

I am not doubting her talent or potential. But she always played it safe when she was at her prime. She knew she was admired for her innocence, chirpy, cute, bubbly, childlike, gentle, vulnerable damsel in distress image and she milked it like no tomorrow.

I am sure Jaya and Rishi praised her potential and comic timing but to audience, nothing was seen in 90s except 2 types of roles she used to do. Chirpy girl or gentle girl in distress. And for that, Juhi has no one else except her own poor choices to blame. She never made serious effort to step out of her comfort zone even when she had best of offers at her door.

I am surprised she chose to do faltu films like Gang, Andaz, Loafer, Jhooth Bole Kauwa kate, Karobar over Mrityudand, Raja Hindustani, DTPH, Border back then.

She still often agrees to do faltu roles like Son of Sardar (though she was good in it) or Bhootnath.

3 Deewarein, My Brother Nikhil, Gulaabi gang showed a new side of her only later. She completely played it safe in 90s.
