I Want To Breathe – A Sai Joshi TS
Chapter 3 (Last Chapter)
“Congratulations to all of you for successfully killing the soul of Sai Kamal Joshi.”
--------------
Sai was numb. She was clueless and ignorant of what this man, right in front of her, was speaking. She could not fathom if his words were prudent or not and she hated this, to say the least. She hated to be numb and perplexed. She hated to not being able to introspect on his words which were the bitterest words she had to face that day, even more than Kaku’s!
“No, no Sai, he has to be lying. How can you stop being your Aaba’s girl when you still hold him the closest to your heart? It’s impossible that you have diverted away from the characteristics he gave you, isn’t it? Yes, Kunu is definitely lying.”
Sai let her heart believe this and her stupid heart even did, like every other time. It accepted that nothing had changed and everything was fine. It accepted that Kunal was over-exaggerating the entire matter in the heat of the moment and it even accepted that she was still the same Sai Joshi. But only if her conscience had bought the lie this easily!
“Seriously Sai,when did you start running away from the bitter truths? Do you seriously believe that of all the people, Kunal is going to lie to you on something this huge? Are you certain that even after so many years of friendship, he can actually not understand you well? Remember, he knows you better than you know yourself. And look at yourself, are you the same Sai you were when you first entered this house? Are you the same Sai of Gadchiroli who would have blasted the person who had dared to speak to you the way Kaku did today? No, you aren’t. Ask yourself and you will get the answer.”
Sai froze when this new information was provided to her.She didn’t want to let her conscience guide her. She wanted to be guided by her heart. This was what she had wanted and achieved for the past one year. But till how long? For how long would she continue choosing her heart over her brain and endure more than she already was? For how long would she choose the easy path and avoid the rocky but the right one?
“Not anymore!”
She, for the first time in months, let her brain think and speak. She let her mind wander over all the happenings of the past year in a jittery, quickly pondering over all the incidents where her reaction should have been sterner. She thought of the umpteen times where she had gone against what her father might want for her. She remembered all the times when she had simply forgotten the existence of Sai Joshi.
Sai gasped sharply as she realized that Kunal was indeed right! She had given up on her original character for various reasons and circumstances but whatever the reasons were, Sai felt terrible even imagining that she was not a Joshi anymore. It made her loathe herself for disappointing her father. She could not breathe and was internally choking every second the realization dawned on her. While struggling to stay on her feet, she looked up at Kunal and saw him crying profusely with his body shaking convulsively. His head was bent down and he had his face in his hands. Sai kept looking at him as if drawing strength from him when even he was in his most vulnerable moment.
In that moment, she realized one thing. She realized that she couldn’t change the past, but she was more than determined to change her future. She wanted to live in the future only and only as Sai Joshi, as a liberated and a free bird. A bird who could freely breathe.
“ENOUGH! Enough of being Sai Chavan, enough of trying to be someone you never were. It’s time to bring back the old Sai Joshi, for Aaba, for yourself and…..for Kunal.”
As Kunal looked up after wiping off his violent tears, he looked straight at Sai and she saw his facial expressions changing from glumness to shock. His mouth was left open as he saw Sai, firmly looking at him with new found, or rather rediscovered confidence. Sai gave him a small, proud smile and walked straight to Kaku. She then spoke to the matriarch in a voice, calm yet determined.
“Kaku, as Kunal has already mentioned everything I wanted to say to you regarding this foolish and inconsiderate request of yours, I would not say much. The only thing I would say is that I don’t want to become a mother. Even if I didn’t have strong reasons in my argument, which I definitely have right now, I would not become a mother if I didn’t want to. And no one, even you, could or can force me to do otherwise.” Sai was sternly composed right now but her dam of patience was on a breaking verge. If it broke, she would either cry inconsolably or rip everyone apart in the worst way possible and she didn’t want either of these to happen.
“Ayee, jungleee mungli! You dare chall…..”
“Shut up Kaku!” Sai roared. She was almost about to show Kaku her place but she didn’t. There had been enough confrontations and fights that day. Now, all Sai wanted was to keep her words methodically in front of everyone without wasting even a tiny bit of energy.
“Kaku, I have had enough non-sense today. Don’t test my patience to an extent that I absolutely forget all my limits.” With this she turned around to face Virat who was standing there with a petrified expression on his face.
“He has an inkling of what you are about to do, doesn’t he?” Sai thought.
She very slowly walked to him, stood in front of him and looked into his beautiful hazel brown eyes which were full of desperation.
“I want to leave,” she said with a big lump in her throat.
Virat just stood there with a blank expression as if he had not yet processed the meaning behind Sai’s crystal clear words. Even before she could speak another word, Ashwini Aai came running behind her and turned her around by her shoulders.
“What are you even saying Sai? You know you can’t leave, right? Remember what I told you? You two are soul mates and if you leave,Virat’s life might be in another danger. And your relationship was getting better anyways, right? Then why leave your husband and stay away from him? Stay with Godu.”
Sai could not believe her ears. She stared at her mother incredulously. Wait, was she even her mother? Sai, for the first time in an entire year, felt that this woman was not her mother but just her mother-in-law. After all, which mother would let her daughter suffer in a relationship where she was struggling to breathe every day? She was just a loving mother-in-law, not a mother and this was yet another blow to Sai’s already broken heart.
“Aai, are you seriously asking me to stay in this toxic and unhealthy relationship just because you believe that walking away puts our lives at jeopardy? You are wrong Aai. Staying with each other is what puts our lives in grave peril. Keeping aside the emotional trauma and baggage which comes with it, every time there is a mishap, it’s the direct consequence of our living together because I don’t leave the house on my own but your son forces me to do so with his toxic and insensitive behavior. So stop saying that we are some soul mates because we definitely aren’t. I am sorry if my words hurt you but when I was in the hospital struggling to understand even the simplest of things, you very smartly manipulated me into believing that Virat Sir’s life might be in danger if I don’t come back. You emotionally blackmailed me in my weakest hours when I was already depressed and this is something I realized only today. I fell for your stupidity and lies that day but I won’t today. I love you Aai and I always will, but I don’t think I can pay heed to your words anymore.”
Sai, without sparing even a second, turned around to look at Virat once again and repeated her previous statement.
“Virat Sir, I want to leave.”
The moment she said that, a part of Virat shook, collapsed and died. With a very uneven voice he said, “Sai, you very well know that what I truly want is to say to you that don’t leave. I can’t imagine living without you. You are like oxygen to my lungs and without oxygen, it is difficult to survive. But still, I wouldn’t stop you in any way. I have committed heinous crimes and the only way I can redeem myself is by letting you go. So, go Sai, live your way. Be happy and yes, please forgive me.”
Sai couldn’t do this. She was just not strong enough.Seeing Virat like this, helpless and dead, made her weak. She wanted to tell him that she was just joking, she wanted to never leave him and she wanted to hug him and stay in his embrace forever. But she didn’t. She had done this enough and now even if leaving him killed her inside out, she would do it. She would do what was right. As she looked at him, she could see that he wasn’t even shedding a single tear and yet, his eyes felt like they couldn’t cry anymore. His hands were folded behind his back and Sai knew what he was controlling himself from.
Sai slowly went near him and put both her arms around his body. She stayed there, in his embrace, and cried her heart out. It was their last hug and she deserved at least this much. Virat too, put his arms around her and pulled her in but he still wasn’t crying. Then, very abruptly, he broke the hug, as if telling Sai to leave sooner so that he could cry to his heart’s content. He didn’t want to cry in front of her, he had done this enough.
As Sai looked at him, she slowly started moving backwards without even turning behind. Just when she was about to lose her balance, she felt strong, protective arms holding and steadying her by her shoulders. She turned around and sure, Kunal was there, looking at her with concern dripping out of his eyes. Sai, once again felt herself going weak and hugged Kunal tightly by placing her hands around his neck. It was a bone crushing hug and with every growing second, her grip just tightened.
“Stay……forever,” Sai whispered to Kunal.
Kunal, who was already in a pool of draining emotions, felt his soul hurt on this little request of hers. He pulled her in tighter, if it was even possible, to convey to her that he was there. Today, tomorrow and till his last breathe. Sai got the needed assurance by this action of his and broke the hug.
Sai couldn’t stay here now, not even for a second.Without looking at Virat, she spoke to him, her final words, “Virat Sir, I will be there by tomorrow morning to pick up my luggage. I hope you won’t mind that,” then with a little pause she continued, “Please take care of yourself.”
With that she ran out of the house, a house which had been hers for an entire year.
---------------------
As she walked along the footpaths in the dark night, she felt her heart wrench even after 15 minutes of walking. She knew that it what was not safe for her to be alone at this time of the hour but she couldn’t care more. She was not able to think rationally and was not even able to form sentences. Slowly she paced up and soon, she found herself running, mindlessly along the dim-lit roads. She ran and ran, not thinking of even a tiny thing in that moment. She just ran, wanting to liberate herself in the truest way. She ran, wanting to breathe again.
