I Want To Breathe â A Sai Joshi TS
DISCLAIMER- A LONG CHAPTER
Chapter 2(C)
Pin-drop silence reigned through the hall of the Chavan Nivas so much so that only 3 things were audible, the tickling of the wall clock, the dumb stuck gasps of everyone present, especially the elders, and the one kilometre per second racing heart of Mrs. Patralekha Salunkhe.
ACP Virat Chavan had just finished reciting the entire story of his and Pakhiâs past, right from the notorious 2 day yoga retreat love, the very famous celibacy oath to his and Saiâs marriage and some disturbing incidences post that. On Kunalâs absolute determination to hear anything and everything, Virat also accepted what exactly had transpired between him and Pakhi at the cafĂŠ when he had held her hands, letting her cry. After hearing the entire story from the man who had been a part of it every second, everyone was shocked in some way or the other. Sai was just very furious and upset on hearing that Pakhi had almost hit on a married man and her husband had hidden it till date for God knows what reason! Samrat was shocked to say the least. He just felt like his entire life was a big fat lie. He couldnât believe it that his brother had, yet again, lied to him on a matter as sensitive as this. Ashwini had somewhat expected things to be like this and was scared thinking about the consequences it would have on Sai and Viratâs married life. Everyone else, including Sonali and Omkar, were just dumbstruck by this new information which was provided to them. But the thing which had astonished them the most was the celibacy oath Virat had taken. They just couldnât help but question Viratâs intelligence and be mortified and angry at the foolish things the duo, especially Pakhi, had done. Karishma continued with her business of chuckling and giggling on the new dimension this entire confrontation had taken. âThis is going to be fun,â she thought.
Kunal just took turns in looking at Virat and Pakhi, with his eyes popping out and his face screaming amazement. After some time of thinking what exactly he had to say, he started speaking, âOkay, Mr.Chavan, I swear that had todayâs matter not been serious and had your past not affected Sai and Samrat Sir in the worst way possible, I would have hysterically laughed for one hour straight at what your âpastâ exactly is! Like seriously, âa 2 day yoga loveâ is love for you?â With that he broke into laughter, not being able to control himself. Virat looked down, feeling second hand embarrassment at his revelations. Patralekha was angry, upset, shocked and scared, all at the same time. Were things over for her?
Kunal somehow controlled his laughter and spoke with his voice grave again. âNo one, I mean not even 14 year olds fall in love or even have a strong infatuation in 2 days. Even they attempt to know each other for at least some weeks and then take a step ahead. But you two met each other, felt an instant attraction, spent time with each other, fell in love, promised to call and keep up the love and planned your entire future together, just in 2 DAYS. 2 days is equal to 48 hours and that is it, in this time span, you two fell in irrevocable love with other which forced Mr.Chavan to take a celibacy oath and promise to keep Mrs.Patralekha in his heart forever. Like practically, you didnât even spend 48 hours with each other because out of that time, yâall spent at least 20 hours sleeping and away from each other. It is said that time does not decide the strength of your relationship, your bond does but this is a nothing but a lie. Your relationship strengthens just with time. So what exactly did you think Mr.Chavan, before taking such a stupid oath and spoiling your brotherâs life forever?â
âI didnât have any intention to hurt Samrat or spoil his life. He is very dear to my heart and I really love him. I could very well see that Samrat liked Pakhi and wanted to spend his life with her. Breaking this marriage would mean breaking his heart, something I didnât want to be the reason for. As I said, in the heat of the emotional moment, I promised Pakhi to keep her in my heart forever. I didnât have any mal-intentions and I was just going treat her as a friend in the future.â Virat said, desperate to defend his actions and not be misunderstood yet again.
âNo, absolutely no amount of defending is going to change the fact that promising your ex-lover cum to-be-sister in law, celibacy for the rest of your life is morally and ethically wrong. You just promised your to-be-elder sister-in-law that you would love her forever, then how is it fair to your brother? Just think about it without self-victimizing yourself.â Kunal said, now turning towards Pakhi.
âAnd maâam, if we start talking about you, it might just go on for a week. So just a few questions and letâs get done. Today is a Sunday and except you and some elders, everyone have their hands full with work from tomorrow. So my first question, Mr.Chavan, like an imbecile, promised to keep you in his heart forever without falling in love ever again. But then, what made you marry his brother the moment he made this promise? You were sceptical of marrying Samrat Sir on knowing that Mr.Chavan is his brother, so why was it that you instantly agreed on the marriage when he promised to love you? What were you thinking in that moment? Did you think that you could live with Samrat Sir and have an illicit affair with Mr.Chavan simultaneously?â
Patralekha wanted to defend herself by cooking up some lies but she very well knew that speaking a word more would just make the idiot doctor question her even harder. So for the first time, she just stayed mum.
On not getting any response, Kunal continued with his bitter questioning, âIf you had married Samrat with your own will, then why is it that Sai being Mr.Chavanâs wife affected you more than your husband going missing in action? Why is it that seeing Mr.Chavan and Sai get close hurt you and made you hate on Sai? Why is it that you always tried to torture a sheer 19-year-old teen for marrying your brother-in-law when even she was not happy with her own marriage? Why did you always try to prove her wrong and instigated all the elders against her 24/7? Why, just why does their relationship and Saiâs presence in this house still affect you even when you have claimed to move on with Samrat Sir?â
âItâs okay Kunal, thereâs no use of questioning,â Samrat said with no emotion on his face. His voice was cold and his eyes lost somewhere. âWhen my own brother has stabbed me yet again, the pain inflicted by Patralekha seems very insignificant. I took the decision of giving our relationship another chance so that the elders, particularly my mother, could be happy. But not now! Now, I will do the right thing and end this namesake relationship for once and for all.â He looked at his mother for affirmation and she in turn slowly nodded her head through her tears.
But this was not the end! This was not why Kunal was wasting his energy on this fight. He was definitely happy that things would get better for Samrat and he would get another chance of falling in deep love with someone deserving or stay elatedly single but Kunal had other significant things to take care of.
âSo now, coming back to my initial topic, you all wanted Sai to become a mother because yâall felt that Sai was not fulfilling her duties as a wife. I hope you have now realized that Mr.Chavan has been an absolutely pathetic and loathe worthy husband to Sai. He has not only been inconsiderate and insensitive of Saiâs feelings, suffering and trauma but has also allowed his ex-lover to torture and mentally harass her and even been a part of the team. So expecting Sai to be a good wife while he is consented to go scot free is not acceptable. Also, yâall canât say that Mr.Chavan wouldnât find a suitable bride for him after 5 years when Sai leaves him because she was not the one who initiated all this. He was the one who set the conditions for the marriage, he was the one who didnât want a husband-wife relationship and he was the one who told Sai that she could leave him the day she becomes a doctor. So even if his feelings change, it is not necessary that Saiâs feelings should change too. She is entitled to do as her heart desires. Also, Mr.Chavan clearly didnât mind staying a virgin for his entire life as confirmed by his promise to Mrs.Patralekha. So, I am sure he wouldnât mind it even now. That eliminates your argument on how your son would have to be s*x-deprived for 5 years. So now, better apologize to Sai for blaming, humiliating and mocking her without understanding both the sides of the coin.â
Hearing this, Virat felt like he was being slapped again and again. âBut, maybe, I deserve it,â he thought.
Kaku knew that Kunal was right. She knew that Virat and Patralekha had betrayed them by hiding the truths. She knew that Patralekha needed to be thrown out of this house BUT, she couldnât lose this argument to Kunal. Her power had already dwindled and listening to Kunal and agreeing with him would mean making everyone believe that Bhavani Nagesh Chavan had lost her position of authority and was now just a regular member of the Chavan family. This was something she could definitely not afford and hence, she just went ahead with sticking to her orders like a power-hungry matriarch.
âVirat and Patralekha will both be questioned and punished for their misdeeds. Patralekha will be dealt with well.â With this she, glared at Patralekha and Patralekha knew that now there was no way she could get out of this mess. Virat himself had admitted the truth and she had no arguments left. If looks could kill, Kakuâs glare could kill her that very moment.
âBut, I will still not excuse Sai. She will have to give me the heir of this family. She and Virat can both sort out their issues and start a normal married life. We elders, at least, deserve to see our grandchildren grow up. So, Sai has to fulfil the responsibilities of being a good daughter-in-law.â
Kunal couldnât believe his ears. After everything that had happened within the confines of this room, after everything he had said and revealed, after literally ripping them apart and making them understand that their demand was inconsiderate and wrong, this stubborn matriarch was still sticking to her words like a fevicol did. âHow the hell do I just make her shut the f*** up?â
âTalking to you is like banging my head against a wall. You are so utterly stupid and obstinate that you refuse to understand what I am saying. Okay fine, letâs consider that Sai becomes a mother. I would make sure that she doesnât have to go through this against her will but still, letâs just consider. Sai, becoming a mother, is directly proportional to her dreams getting compromised. So will Mr. Chavan too compromise on his career and his personal life to take care of his child? While Sai works in the kitchen, will Mr.Chavan feed, clean and take care of his child or will he work in the kitchen while Sai does the same?â
âWhat are you even speaking? Virat is an IPS officer, he serves the nation. Why would he work in the kitchen and do a womanâs job. The country has progressed, but not this much. You first ask yourself, doctor.Would you do what you expect from Virat?â Kaku replied, absolutely disgusted by the prospect of Virat working in the kitchen.
âMrs. Bhavani, I respect a police officerâs work a lot and I understand that it is extremely important. But then, Sai is training to become a doctor too. Her career is as important as Mr. Chavanâs is so you canât really say that he canât compromise on his job while Sai can. And you asked me whether I would do what I am asking of Mr. Chavan? Of course I would. If you donât know, I already do all the household chores and am not dependent on anyone for it. My mother has taught me everything from cooking, cleaning, washing and even mopping and sweeping ever since I was 10 years old. So after getting married, when, me and my wife return home from a tedious day at work, I wouldnât leave her to do all the household chores. We would both do it together. And mind you, if I donât do so, my mother will slap me across my face and teach me once again that what is, being a true man.â
Kaku couldnât think of any smart reply to this. She was still ruminating on how to defeat him at this war of words. Before she could think of something, Sonali started with her usual taunting sessions. Kunal, with a sigh turned around to shut her up but whatever he was about to say died down on seeing Sai, properly for the first time that day.
What he saw on her face slipped the ground beneath his legs. He lost his senses and all he could see was Sai and that one look on her face. He had seen Sai in every state of hers, when she was happy, sad, angry, harsh, in pain, extremely vulnerable and even fearful. But today, what he saw was something he had never seen on her face before. Sai Kamal Joshi had a look of defeat on her face. She was not the Sai Joshi he knew, she was not the Sai Kamal Joshi who could lose, but not accept defeat. She was just a girl who had surrendered to her fate and the people around her. She was just Sai Virat Chavan.
Kunal, totally out of senses, started speaking not even realizing that he cut off Sonali, who was still badmouthing Sai. âSome days ago, during one of our therapy sessions, I jokingly told Sai that this house was a zoo. I didnât know at that time that what I was saying was absolutely right. This house is indeed a zoo, a place where the ringmaster tames lionesses, making them lose their original character. When a lioness is on a hunt, no one can stop her from doing what she wants, no matter what. But you can shoot her, you can kill her soul. This is exactly what all of yâall have done. My Sai is no longer her Aabaâs girl. She is just her undeserving husbandâs wife. Seeing Sai like this, Kamal Uncle would have died a hundred deaths. Sometimes, I just wonder, why did he have to leave his little princess like this, all alone in this cruel world? But anyways! Congratulations to all of you for successfully killing the soul of Sai Kamal Joshi.â
With that he broke down completely. He couldnât, he just couldnât see his Sai defeated. She was a lioness, wasnât she? So how come she just gave up like this? To what extent was she tortured? How much did she silently cry under the shower? How many times did she think of death being a better option than life? âNo, no donât think that way.â He quickly wiped his tears and looked up, only to be amazed, once again.
He saw Sai again, this time with a totally different look on her face. He once again felt like he would collapse, but this time out of happiness. She was still in tears, but this time the look of defeat was replaced by the expression of confidence. Her body language had changed, from being submissive to rebellious. She held her head high, as if challenging everyone to dare order or question her. But the most important feature, which didnât go unnoticed but rather held Kunalâs entire attention, was the sparkling and blazing glint of her eyes. A glint which just belonged to SAI KAMAL JOSHI!
