First I’d just like to say, I’m sorry to see people leaving the show, but that’s totally fair. TV should be enjoyable, and if it’s causing you more grief than enjoyment, that’s totally valid.
I find it interesting that people see Jasmine getting married to Fateh as winning. That’s an interesting point of view. What does it mean to win in a situation like this? She may be getting what she thinks she wants, but at what cost? I think that’s an interesting story. What does it mean to actually love someone? What is worth losing to chase dreams you don’t completely understand? Honestly, I really don’t care for Jasmine as a character - she’s selfish, immature, and completely incapable of taking any accountability for her actions, she’s an extremely flawed human being who cannot recognize those flaws. She’s also done some truly awful things (and it’s downright disgusting carrying on with your sister’s husband), but does that mean she’s completely irredeemable? That she can’t grow and learn from those mistakes? In my experience ITV is not great at exploring characters as whole human beings, especially the characters that are supposed to be seen as “villains”. I just don’t see Jasmine seemingly getting her way as her winning because she actually doesn’t know what she wants. She’s in love with the idea of a lot of things (going to Canada, marrying Fateh, having a grand life, etc.) and people like that are never satisfied and never actually win. I think that’s an interesting angle that can be shown here. You can manipulate your way to getting what you think you want but then what?
@bold 1: if you look at the initial episodes of fatejo marriage- J had one goal by hook or crook get fateh the object- which she did. winning is not always a philosophy. its a tangible object. if she was trying to win back love then we could have this philsophical discussion of the nuances of jasmine. she wasn't- it was a zidh for her- to prove that fateh would do anything for her and she even sacrificed her family for that without an ounce of remorse. she's angry that she's not the center of attention, not upset that her family aren't with her. she'd have happily gotten married without them if tejo wasn't getting their love.
@bold 2: see this view on characters like jasmine is very problematic- im sure she will be 'redeemed' but the fact is that in real life there is a reason why serious crimes (listed in the order of seriousness) such as- a) attempt to murder (even unintentional- as in you didn't plan to overdose someone but nearly did by intentionally giving them a higher dose and then threatened to do exactly that next time) b) paying to get someone kidnapped and facilitation of rape c) cyber crime d) making fraudulent charges of fraud (on tejo about the academy)- are highly punishable by law. these are not a slap on the wrist crime. nor are they mere manipulation of people. these are very very very serious crimes. whether she did it cos- 'bacchi hain' or 'doesn't know what she wants' or any other reason- thats a disproportionately small reason (unless she is underage in which case fateh should be arrested along with virks and sandhus) to even question whether she is 'redeemable'.
Moving onto Tejo, when you’re in a toxic situation, it’s a lot easier to say you’re going to disconnect and leave than it is to leave. It definitely takes time and a lot of strength especially when you don’t have the support system around you to actually make those changes. I appreciate her taking a stand that even though she loves Fateh she’s not going to go back to him. That’s big. Does she still make frustrating decisions because of that love? For family? Loyalty? Yes. She doesn’t know any other way to be. She is a daughter in a family that still prescribes to outdated notions of what it means to be a good daughter, and on top of that there’s the pressure to make up for Jasmine’s behaviour (even if it’s unconscious). I’m born and raised in a completely different country, with significantly more relaxed, chill, and liberal parents/family, and I still feel the pressure sometimes of what it means to be a good Indian daughter. When something is so ingrained in you it takes time to unlearn it. I don’t know how far they’ll take it, but I think Angad pushing her could lead to that journey.
All of that rambling to say that at the end of the day though, it’s ITV, so I probably need to lower my expectations lol
(thanks to anyone that got through all that, I had so many thoughts and I think they may have just come out as a jumble lol)
@bold 3: politely disagree: for her to admit- i love him but won't take him back- anyone following the show could have told you that. thats not big because it has no conviction. the zakhams she mentioned were there on the divorce day but she still breathlessly waited for him to not show up, change his mind etc.(if the argument is- she's still human then i agree. but then behave as humanbeings do when you are faced with disregard and emotional abuse- either fight for your rights or withdraw. facilitating your abusers in the name of love and family is deeply deeply problematic. she was dancing at the sangeet of her ex husband and sister with her ex-husband multiple times just so they could gain in a situation she only will get more humiliation for. i strongly disagree this has anything to do with her being a 'good daughter'- she is aware that a third engagement broken is going to only being more shame on her entire family. she is disregarding essentially everyone who loves her (as toxic as they are or archaic- they love her) in favour of fulfilling fateh's (NOT jasmine- read above about why she suddenly cares for family) wishes. her family did NOT force her to facilitate fateh and jasmine's happiness. that is simply her stockholm syndrome and now she's drawn angad into her mess knowing well that her sister is a dangerous criminal capable of anything- including harming her cos her diamond ring is bigger. that my friend is what makes tejo toxic with no excuse of 'manufacturing defect'
CURIOSITY: tejo uses the word manufacture default. we're humans not machines and that is a very problematic space to put us in- it negates the most fundamental sapien part of us- which is that we are capable of thought and evolution of thought and transformation of thought to product/behaviour/change. i find it very interesting that you're willing to give jasmine the benefit of growth but expect none from tejo (i mean she doesn't even expect from herself tbh). is it because she is 'good' and jasmine is 'bad'? plainly just curious! no underlying thoughts
