I agree that trend of big stars taking share in profits has complicated it further and made multi starrers difficult to materialise.
I also think today's stars are more insecure, sensitive about their image, screen time, fear being overshadowed or slighted in comparison or be seen as supporting actors the way Rishi Kapoor is seen as sidekick in most multi starrers now when people look back at his work.
Producers cannot give profit shares to all stars.
In this sense it is more like Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor era when none of big stars worked together. Except maybe DK and RK in one film with Nargis.
But do Ranbir, Varun and Ranveer also take share in profits? As newbies too they were never cast together despite not being in position to make too many demands as actors.
I can understand if Khans and Hrithik cannot be seen together now. But even for newcomers it is rare to see them in multi starrers with their contemporaries. Aamir, Salman, Raveena, Karishma rarely got along together but they ended up doing AAA because they were raw, young and very new in industry and accepted whatever that was offered to them. They were in no position to do nakhre back then. Raveena and Karishma openly fought during shooting of that film but it did get completed. Something of this sort is still rare post 2000s when not so expensive newbies also hardly do multi starrers.
I feel today's lot also lacks respect for filmmakers unlike 70s stars who often did films for filmmakers out of regard, friendship and were ready to tolerate each other for sake of filmmakers. Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh did not get along at all but still did Naseeb, Dostana and Kaala Patthar out of regard for the filmmakers. They did not want to alienate or fall out of favour with top filmmakers of that time. Today's lot is hardly going to keep own ego aside to work for prestigious filmmakers and production houses.
