My displeasure with this show

These points made me highly displeased with this show and maybe is also the reason for its low trps besides timeslot.

1- Not properly showing the attack of British on odisha. The treaty they made with gajpati maharaj to defeat Marathas, rajguru being against the treaty, then deceiving gajpati maharaj by not following the treaty after winning over Marathas, Rajguru's revolt , his hoax trial and then his gruesome death.😭 I salute Shaheed rajguru. 😭 The whole story arc couls have been shown in one or two pisodes to make foundation for Buxi's will to revolt and also give insight to why Brits are hated by Buxi and the people.

2-Showing characters without any foundation. They introduced Buxi and his family, charan and Fletcher without any solid back story. They gave half baked information on Fletcher. He's anglo indian but nothing about his family or how he gained this important position in company.🥴

3- Fletcher's obsession with Kalyani also has no foundation. When did he fall so hard for her that he is ready to loose every self respect and do this low life thing of kidnapping Kalyani. He didn't once think that badamba will not surrender at all if he keeps doing this nonsense with Kalyani. This also doesn't go with British meethe chure nature. In reality, a Brit officer wouldn't dare to do something like this if the only princess herself wasn't interested. Not because they were afraid or something, just that they weren't interested in such type of alliances, also company would never allow such alliances because that would mean officer was interested in self gains rather than doing work for the company's fortunes. So, this is highly absurd. Absolutely illogical and unintentionally funny. If the actors didn't have chemistry it would look even more clownish and funny.

His right hand clown Charan Pattnaik also has no foundation of why is he serving Fletcher and for what gains. He's just there, Buxi also knows him but audience don't know who is he exactly.

Gadadhar and his maid's relationship is also out of the blue, when did they start their affair and how? No foundation for that too.😒🤕

4- Editing department, god just fire them already. No need to say that editing is absolutely horrible. The worst I have seen till now on itv. The way they use green screen all the time is also an eyesore. The wardrobe is also same, everyone has just two or three clothes, poor mohan has just one costume and he's supposed to be a prince. PLzz....

5-The flipping nature of characters, except Buxi , radha and possibly Fletcher every character just dwindles, one day Kalyani is strong, next day weak and everyday just plain childish and stupid. In the scene where ministera advised her to not open her mouth, I felt they were right instead of Kalyani. She's just plain stupid and makes me wanna skip her scenes. She's god damn irritating. It's gonna be a torture to see her marrying Buxi.😒

6- No chemistry between Kaxi, they look like siblings to me, like a brother protects his sister, it looks like Buxi is saving Kalyani like a brother. No chemistry whatsoever.🥱😐

The show is doomed and no plot can save it now. 😒😢

As an Odia myself ,I always had a wish of seeing the stories of Buxi Jagabandhu and other historical and cultural icons of Odisha on mainstream television and cinema for they are,in contemporary terms, criminally underrated. Hence upon seeing one of the promos for Vidrohi, I was excited. I was prepared for distortions and creative liberty for I am familiar with how ITV periodic dramas operate. But after watching it,to say that I am disappointed would be an understatement.

The lack of research into Odisha's history and lopsided characterizations are merely the tip of the iceberg. A fact that has been nagging me since the initial promos is the extra attention that is being showered on Kalyani who is supposedly based on one of Jagabandhu's wives. And it leaves me with one question. Why? With all due respect to the real Jagabandhu's real wife, the character of Kalyani should be hardly relevant in the very first show about the Paika Rebellion. To a layman who watches this show without any prior knowledge,it would seem as if it is Kalyani's story and Buxi's role is to support her when it should be the other way round. There are three Kalyani centric promos and only one about Buxi. How will the audience be able to develop a connect with Buxi if the writers themselves don't treat him as the central character? I am well aware of the importance of a romantic subplot but when it comes to periodic dramas,it must never overshadow the main plot or else that would derail the show. Maharana Pratap and Jhansi Ki Rani did a fairly decent job of portraying romance without letting it interfere with the core concept which Chakravartin Ashok Samrat failed to do,as a result of which,it lost its charm post leap.

And that is one of the reasons why this show is unable to leave an impression on the minds of viewers for Buxi Jagabandhu should be the focal point of the story instead of the chor bazaar version of Sai Joshi. The important aspects of his life, the brutal murder of the martyred Jayee Rajguru,Buxi's military acumen and strategies, his bonding with his Paika brethen would make for interesting plot fodder instead of Kalyani's adventures at Badamba

Then we have Fletcher who is such a....................contradictory character. I don't find it to be that unbelievable that a Brit would fall for an Indian because, racism and elitism aside, they, too, have hormones😆But what baffles me is how brashly he acts on those feelings. In this parallel universe, Major Fletcher is an Anglo Indian who,as we are told repeatedly,is looked down upon by the Brits and will go to any lengths to prove that he is one of them. So from a realistic perspective, wouldn't it make more sense for him to seek an Englishwoman for a wife that would further strengthen his position among his peers? Marrying Kalyani,on the other hand, would be no different from axing his own foot. Honestly I do not have any issues with him falling for Kalyani because the trope of a villain in love is one of my personal favourites. But the execution, in this case, could have been better. They could have kept it subtle by playing in on the tension between FleNi for a while with Kalyani remaining oblivious and Fletcher vehemently denying his feelings due to his position and ambitions. Then it all would have come crashing on him when she gets married to Buxi and he would have been overwhelmed by regret which would have sealed his grudge against Buxi . But instead we have got him acting as a polished Kabir Singh who exercises liberties that even King George IV could not possess.

Secondly the direction and sets of the show are too lacklustre for what is supposed to be a magnum opus. As far as the cast is concerned then Sharad and Danny are the saving graces so far. Sulagna is decent and Hemal is the weakest link among all four.Anang Desai, who is an excellent veteran actor,is sadly wasted as Badamba Naresh. He would have made a fantastic Jayee Rajguru. I believe that this show could have been executed better had it been on Sony or Colors. Those channels are far from perfect but they can handle periodic dramas well unlike Star Plus.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant review👍

You have stated all the points in a language which I couldn't write. Regarding Kalyani getting more screenspace and Buxi is bothering me as well. She was one of his wives but that's it. They could have kept her in background but no....god.... don't get me started on Fletcher, it makes me sad, we have seen caricatures on British but this was extreme. 🤣And even laughable.

🤬 Despite the appearance of his supervisor who once again mocks and questions Fletcher’s loyalty.. he still kidnaps Kalyani and forces her to marry him?! 🤢 I wish Danny Sura himself quits this show. Which British officer would still choose to marry an Indian princess even after being reprimanded, mocked by his supervisor regarding his loyalty?! What a fall! And his cringe dialogues continue-Badamba aur Kalyani mere hain, aur hamesha mere hi rehenge.. 😵

It’s laughable that Kalyani fought a battle, and gave a setback to the British despite their superior weapons and it’s even more laughable that she was unable to defend herself from being kidnapped,😲 despite being aware of the sudden disappearance of her guards, and preparing herself for an attack, yet she was helpless against the ambush?! Why exactly are the makers showing her so brave in one scene and helpless in another?

Also, what’s the use of showing the maid turn Gadhadar into a rebel against his own brother? Wasn’t that the wife’s job? What’s the difference then between the maid and wife? Ya, they are trying to show that the wife has changed into a positive character, who is pious, righteous and it wouldn’t be good to show her negative, hence the maid was made the bakra.. ? 🤪

Lovely post ❤️ Relevant and valid questions. I wish there could have been more discussions with you on this forum, but that looks impossible now.

This show has failed so so badly on so many fronts.. and now they are making it worse by showing nonsensical things. The main plot has already been sidelined from the beginning.. they have just attempted to show passing references to certain important things like Jayi Rajguru’s brutal death, while glorifying other nonsense like Badamba Nareshs’ taking the bullet for BJ.

Chor bazaar version of Sai Joshi.. 🤣Unfortunately, the ratings are so bad that subtle elements of showing tension between Fleni won’t be shown.. everybody thinks that melodrama and cringe Bollywood’s filmi dialogues would grab more eyeballs, hence they have resorted to that, otherwise nothing else explains this Englishman’s obsession over an Indian princess and his laughable attempt at kidnap and forcible marriage of the said princess. I don’t know whether Sony or Colors would have made a better show, but somewhere I feel the PH is relatively new.. hence this is the reason for their lacklustre and amateur show making capabilities.

Seriously flutterby, I am so done now. I wanted to see Fletcher and his enmity with Buxi and how Buxi wins over British despite them having much better weapons and army than Buxi. Also, my shipping heart liked Fleni very much but I knew they weren't be together. Still somehow I felt I may be watching a unrequited love turning hatred for Kaxi but I don't think this PH is capable of showing that. It's too bad , they lost many chances to show really good plots but alas I guess this show wasn't just meant to be a memorable one for us.😢 I feel so sad now.

You know now I want a spinoff on Fletcher's parents.🤣 Mommy Fletcher must have been one helluva woman that not only she brought an Englishman on his knees but also made him legitimize their child.

I believe tension between Fleni would totally destroy Kaxi as audience started liking Fleni and I give credit to actors totally because despite them trying to not have any chemistry they still unintentionally created it.🤣😂 I believe they would themselves laugh at this because their characters weren't supposed to be a couple. Ok back to topic, they wouldn't show it because that would make Fleni even more interesting so they chose cringy way to make Kaxi more likeable but no way Kaxi can be likeable to audience because Kaxi have no chemistry and Buxi is already HAPPILY married.

It is such a pity that such a concept was wasted on this inept and good for nothing PH.
