SS - Dharma Patni
The minute she heard the doorbell ring, Anupamaa scampered hurriedly to answer the door. Without wasting another minute, she flew the door open and beamed at her husband standing at the door smiling back at her.
He loosened his tie with his left hand as he took a step inside gathering her in an embrace with his other hand and kissed the crown of her head.
She rewarded him with another cheerful smile, making her look adorable, before she disappeared into the kitchen to fetch some water for him.
The hall was dimly lit unlike the other times of the day. Anuj collapsed on the couch and threw his tie and coat aside. He began to roll up the sleeves of his shirt and checked the time. Its 2.30 already' he murmured, and Anu is still up, way past mid night.'
Anupamaa appeared with a glass of water and gave it to him and extended her hand to collect his discarded coat and suit.
The kids are fast asleep, they waited a lot for you to be back by 12 but then I sent them to bed since it was way past their bed time', Anu informed while she picked up his shoes and set them back into the shoe rack.
Anuj watched her dutifully going about keeping his things away. He forced a smiled and said apologetically, 'It was an emergency and you know...' . Anu put her finger on his lips and stopped him from completing his sentence further.
Looking into his tired eyes she said, 'I understand, you don't have to explain all this.' She smiled and continued, 'Now, if you please freshen up, I have a surprise for you.'
Life has instilled so much patience into this woman', he thought. Sensing her excitement and not wanting to disappoint her any further, he nodded and sprang to his feet and rushed to their bedroom.
Anu skillfully re arranged all the plates on the dining table and warmed up the dishes she'd cooked since morning especially for him. Humming lightly to herself she pranced in and out of kitchen carrying bowls and dishes of various shapes and sizes and deposited them on the table one after another.
Anuj emerged from his bedroom and watched her moving skillfully around the table and arranging it neatly. He crossed his arms against his chest and stood there silently leaning on the door of their room watched her keenly. He chuckled when he saw her stumbling not once but twice because of her saree. He found her terribly cute in her disheveled state running around, her eyes looked heavy and tired yet an innocent smile played on her lips. He could have stood there for ages to watch her but was intruded by her soft voice calling him.
'Anuj!' she called out again and gestured him to come forward. 'Aaiye ne?'
'Wow! All this for me?', he cheerfully asked as he approached the table and saw the spreads of dishes on the table, all his favorites.
Anu beamed with pride, her vigour restored suddenly. She handed him a plastic knife before she unveiled her surprise for the day, the birthday cake she painstakingly baked for him.
Anuj smiled knowingly at her and gathered her into a warm embrace and said,'Thank you so much for doing all this single handedly.'
'Happy Birthday Anuj', Anu whispered against his chest. She felt her eyes pricking but blinked away her tears immediately. Now is the time to celebrate and not brood over the past, she said to herself.
Holding her soft dainty figure in his arms was enough to make this day special. It was celebration in true sense after twenty six years to just hold her securely in his arms, to breathe in her soft feminine scent, to be there comforting one another in silence.
He found his voice and whispered, 'Thank you darling for all this but more so for being there now; at this moment and all the moments to follow'.
Anu smiled reassuringly and held his hand to cut the cake that read,' Happy Birthday Anuj'.
He paused for a second that confused her and she looked up at him. He sighed briefly and said,' It's finally YOUR Anuj' birthday, Anu's Anuj's birthday today' and pointed at his name on the cake.
It didn't take too long for her to realize what he meant and she replied, 'Anu is incomplete without Anuj. She belongs here.'
Poking into his dimple that she insisted exists she coyly said, 'Aaa handsome, fit and cute chokro here is mine and it's his birthday.' She rose on her toes and quickly pecked on his cheek and whispered, 'Happy Birthday'
Anuj laughed heartily but was hushed by her immediately to not wake others up. She sang the birthday song in a small voice while he proceeded to cut the cake.

'Ugh...Enough! 'Anuuuu', Anuj said with his mouth full, to stop his over enthusiast wife from filling up the empty bowl again with the delicious dal.
'What enough?' she scolded him and despite his attempt to stop her, she conveniently filled up the bowl to half.
'Your disturbed sleep cycle and your habit of over exhausting yourself is already a concern. Now if you don't eat properly, how will you manage to remain healthy?' she argued with him.
'My god! Anu, you are my wife not my mother, you are scolding me like you scold Samar and Pakhi.', Anuj sulked rather unnaturally but did not stop to look up at her even once. He helped himself with another roti quickly and continued, 'I feel so... intimidated.'
'Bas huh! You are no less than a child', she teased.
'Arre?!'
Anu had begun to clear the table, she stopped picking up the dishes she was clearing and laughed, looking at him sulking, 'Ok, I was kidding, but it's one of the virtues of an ideal wife'.
'What Virtue?' Anuj asked finishing his food and finally relaxed back on the chair. He looked mighty satisfied having eaten stomach full after so many days.
She drew a deep breath knowing her husband won't give up so easily and said plainly, Bhojeshu Mata.'
'A What?!' Anuj asked in utter confusion.
She pulled up the chair beside him and sat before she began to explain him very patiently pronouncing each word correctly, Karyeshu Dasi, Karaneshu Manthri; Bhojeshu Mata, Shayaneshu Rambha, Roopeshu lakshmi, Kshamayeshu Dharitri, Shat dharmayukta, Kuladharma Patni'
Anuj was dumbfounded and sat still without blinking. Anu studied his blank expressions and laughed, her chiming laughter filling in the silence. Pinching his cheek lovingly, she rose to continue clearing other things on the table but was forced to sit down by Anuj.
Holding her wrist firmly, not allowing her to move, he said, 'Wait a minute woman. When did you begin communicating with aliens and learn their language? What in the name of lord did you just say?'
'Ohoo, Firstly I don't talk to aliens, cant handle normal humans here'. Secondly', she said further, it's Sanskrit, and ma had recited this shlok to me the day I got married and instructed me to follow, to be able to live the life of an ideal wife'....she trailed off...which I did...but..., she looked away...
To break the tension Anuj cleared his throat.
'Oh!...Interesting! Now could you be kind enough to please explain this to your ignorant husband and let him judge if you are an ideal wife indeed', he winked as he held her wrist and pulled her closer to him.
Anu smiled and shoved him away with her free hand. She managed to free her wrist from his hold. She moved to pick the remaining dishes and walked towards the kitchen sink to deposit them and said, 'Okay, I'll try.'
Anuj, to help her, had followed her to the kitchen with some bowls and deposited them on the platform and waited for her to speak.
After giving a thoughtful look at him she began, Karyeshu Dasi - meaning an ideal wife should work like a servant, a dasi in her husband's house, looking after his needs, his children's needs very efficiently. Not meaning to be a slave, but one who works for her husband's welfare happily like a servant would for his master.'
Like you just did, clearing off the table? Kamwalibai? ', Anuj teased her and laughed.
'Anuj!' She hit him playfully on his chest, I am not explaining this further...jao'
Holding her elbow, he drew her back and held his ears, I am sorry, I won't joke'. Looking into her eyes he said very sincerely,' you are the queen of my heart, my house and have never failed to look after me or our children' and smiled appreciatively.
'So quickly the next is...' he coaxed her.
'Well, next is Karaneshu Mantri', Anu continued and explained, - meaning an ideal wife should advise her husband like a minister. Guiding him to understand and tackle life problems wisely'.
'Home minister', he said and saluted making her laugh.
Now I know why the wives are called home ministers.' He went on to imitate her, Anuj do this, Anuj do that, you have to understand this, you can't talk to them like that, please relax..blah..blah..blaa..'
Anu blushing stood there with her hands on her hips waiting for him to finish, 'done?'
Covering up politely he said, 'Arre, I mean to say, without you, what would I do? It's only because of you, I have understood life so closely and meaningfully that I don't go wrong. I was clueless until you came along my dear.'
Anu gave a broad smile and opened the fridge to put the bottles and food back in. Her eyes fell on grapes in the bowl. She took one and popped into his mouth and continued,' Next, Bhojeshu Mata - meaning an ideal wife should feed her husband like a mother.'
Anuj could now comprehend why Anu ensured he always ate on time, ate healthy and ate enough...no not enough but more than enough'
He looked back at her lovingly, his eyes brimming with love for this woman who had so affectionately not just played the role of his wife, or a guiding friend but also a caring mother when he was a lost and vulnerable baby.
Anu snapped her fingers in front of his face and asked, 'Where are you lost?'
Anuj folded his hands in front of her and bowing a little spoke comically, Bhojeshu Anupamaa Mata'
'Jeevto reh dikra', Anu chuckled and raised her palm to bless. She liked to play along and turned off the kitchen lights. She turned to him and said, 'You plan to sit here all night?'
'No mam! right after you', he said and moved aside, allowing her to lead them both to their bedroom.'
Anuj followed her closely behind. Once in, he closed the door behind him and settled on the couch near the bed and asked,' ..and next?'
Anu sat in front of the dresser, keeping away her bangles and earrings and spoke to him looking at his reflection in the mirror, 'Next is...' she paused for a second and blushed briefly. Without wasting another second she made her mind up to skip the next and went on to explain further, 'Roopeshu Lakshmi - meaning an ideal wife should be as beautiful as Goddess Lakshmi. Now being beautiful is not in one's hand, but if understood a little carefully, it means a wife should be Lakshmi' for her husband who manages his finances and cooperates and assists him every way to earn a fortune.'
She picked the cushion up that had fallen on the floor and went and sat next to him and said, '..and such a wife is as beautiful as goddess Lakshmi to her husband.'
Anuj tucked a hair strand behind her ear, 'You are a beautiful soul Anu. Beautiful inside out and though it has nothing got to do with all this, but I realize taking my wallet from you every morning before I leave sure brings me good luck. My business come life partner', he grinned.
'Perfect! The next one please', he said, and put his head on her lap and stretched himself comfortably on the couch.
Anu lovingly ruffled his hair and massaged his scalp gently. 'He looks so peaceful when with me', she thought and smiled to herself.
'Am waiting', he said, his eyes still closed.
Drawing another deep breath, she continued, then Kshmayeshu Dharitri - meaning an ideal wife should have patience like the Earth. She should listen and understand patiently. If need be she should excuse or forgive like Mother Earth does.
Holding her hand close to his heart, Do you feel my heart beat? Had it not been your patience...I don't think...'
'Anuj please', Anu interrupted and warned him to not speak further.
'Fine...next'.
That's it, 'Shat dharmayukta, Kuladharma Patni' - meaning a woman with these six virtues makes her an ideal wife'
'..3...4...and 5', Anuj counted on his finger. He rose and sat up straight and said, you gave me only five, there has to be one more.'
Anu to escape his eyes got up and went on to arrange the bed, 'All done Anuj'. She had a playful smile playing on her lips.
Anuj sensed her uneasiness and knew that she was holding up something. 'Anuu', he called out.
She turned to meet his eyes and knew that her crimson cheeks will give away her secret. She faltered, 'Okay! There is one more' and tittered.
'...and that is'
'Shayaneshu Rambha - meaning an ideal wife should please her husband in bed like the heavenly beauty Rambha'. If a woman is not happy to please her husband or not pleased by him, then she is not an ideal wife.'
'Aha! I like this one', Anuj said mischievously and his eyes twinkled. Any giggled endlessly till he went up to her and pulled her to him holding her elbow. She fell on his chest with a light thud and was immediately caged in his arms.
Knotting his fingers on her back while her hands rested on his chest, he swayed her gently and said comically, 'You possess all the virtues you just discussed wifey! You are indeed in every way my ideal dharma patni Anupamaji', and winked.
Anu threw her head back and laughed. She looked absolutely smitten by him, You are the best Pati in the world' and hugged him.
Pulling her further into his arms, he kissed her face happily, nuzzling her cheek, his stubble tickling her and making her squirm and giggle simultaneously, he said ,My dear love, My Rambha...err...My Anu' making her laugh further, let me make sweet love to you and please you and be pleased by you.'
He swiftly scooped her in his arms and put her gently on the bed. Her laughs died in her mouth when he'd captured her lips and kissed her fervently. Turning off the bedside lamp he announced, 'Its Anuj Kapadia's birthday!! ' making her blush and laugh further.
