Because bottomline is you can only control your kids thus far. I don't want to bring mythology into this also, but I can name one major figure who had a terrible son whose actions caused the death of an entire clan.
Also, 23 is no longer a kid, and adults are responsible for their own actions.
So yeah, unless parents are actively promoting the behavior or enabling, it's a tragedy for them, something to be sympathized with.
