Inspiration goes both ways. I enjoy how Toxic was influenced by Bollywood. There is nothing wrong with sampling or inspiration though. Tons of artists take hooks or sections of a song and then reimagine/rework it in a new song.

Cover versions are great too. If you don't want to alter the original too much, you can acknowledge it as a cover. Miley Cyrus' cover of Hearts of Glass is so refreshingly original. I think Pretty Woman from KHNH is a rare example of a Bollywood cover.

Seems like he is the Anu Malik of his region(I'm assuming it's Indonesia, taking a look at the comments section). Looks also quite similar to Anu Malik. Kya din aagaye, where Anu Malik look alike is copy pasting Anu Malik's songs which in whole probability might also be inspired from somewhere. This is some Dark level shit and my brain hurts.

In Anu's own words...Aag lagaa di...aag!

I realised it but this guy isn't even that famous - there's not much about the artist on wiki. So I'm assuming it's one of those tribute like albums.

Britney's album credited "bollywood mix/ string arrangements" (I brought the album when it came out. But not specifically the songs they took from or the original artists.

Black Eyed Peas' don't phunk with my heart was quite known that they had samples Asha Bhosle's song. I'm not sure if they are credited though.

In many cases where Bollywood songs are concerned - they completely rip off the music without crediting the original artist. Performing to songs of other artists, or using the recording while crediting the original is still fine by me.

Making covers is different - but making money off those songs without crediting the original artists is wrong on so many levels. It's blatant theft, after all.

So I read the whole thread and still confused... Which came first, DDLJ song or Ashraf’s song?

And hard to believe Ilayaraja copied his O priya priya song from him

Everybody copies or gets inspired even ARRahman

Maybe Kalyanji-Anandji had more original compositions, relatively speaking... I say this bcz their tunes have inspired Western artists...

This is not the same as what Bollywood routinely does. I.e. ripping off other people lyrics and music without any acknowledgment. A tiny sample (literally a few seconds), taken from a Bollywood movie, merged together and electronically altered is very different to completely ripping off the tune or lyrics of a song. For example

Bollywood plagiarises. A lot.

Like it doesn't matter to us that Indonesian Ashraff is copying Bollywood, same way it doesn't matter to Hollywood that Bollywood is copying them. So I don't think there is any need to give credits. Hollywood ko pata hai jab naam hi chura rakha hai Bollywood toh kaam toh churayenge hi. Chahe movies ki movies hon, gaane hon, kuch bhi ho. Hollywood doesn't care. Bollywood is a small fish as compared to them like Indonesia Ashraff is a small fish compared to Bollywood.

It's because jurisdiction doesn't stretch so far, especially not at the time - till the early 2000s things worked differently. There is a reason why "Beyonce" was changed to "Beyonse" in the BW song because Beyonce has patented her name. They can't get away with stuff like they did in the 90s.

It's not just about crediting the original artist (of course its copyright infringement) but they will be liable to pay royalties to them. Look at Olivia Rodrigo just giving random credits for her songs to artists like Taylor Swift just for 'inspiring' a song. Only to avoid legal issues.

Not for the reasons you have stated.. India still stands as the biggest movie industry in the world and is a huge market for content consumption. BW is not a small fish compared to HW. It has its rich to its own audience.. which itself is a huge market. Nor do they have the stardom that BW stars enjoy.
