Yup. But there used to be other practices such as diyar-vatu in Western India where widow daughter in law would be married to her husband's younger brother. This would happen for a male heir (I'm not sure how common it was and among which families. But I know about this. Probably the influential ones did it.)

There are such similar practices, basically they're married within the family. Also had a lot of oppression involved in this. We saw in the movie Prem Rog, how her jeth (husband's elder brother) tried to take advantage of the situation and molested her.

So there are a lot of different practices across the societies depending on various factors. Things are different in northern and eastern India than in western and southern India.
