Chapter 2

As Maan’s dark, probing eyes locked on hers, Geet considered making a run for it. The wind was howling while thunder crackled insistently. Maybe she could lose him in the storm if she ran away fast enough?

But before Geet could summon the courage to move, Maan was standing right in front of her. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the alley, and she saw that he was wearing black slacks with shiny dress shoes and a black button-down shirt overlaid by a gray dress vest. Even though his clothes were damp with rain, Maan still looked like a sophisticated, arrogant businessman. He could have been coming from an executive meeting if Geet didn’t know any better.

Maan’s facial features were undoubtedly handsome, but as his gaze turned menacing, Geet couldn’t help but avert her eyes from terror.

“Look at me,” Maan ordered, his voice gravelly. “Now.”

Her heart hammering, Geet slowly tilted her chin up. Was today going to turn out to be her last day on Earth?

“What did you see.” A statement more than a question.

Geet shook her head wildly. “Nothing, sir. I didn’t see anything. I --”

“Liar,” Maan hissed. He placed both of his hands on the brick wall above her shoulders, effectively trapping her.

Rain whipped through the alley as Geet’s tote bag fell to her feet. She felt her body begin to quake from fear.

“Tell me what you saw,” Maan prompted. “And don’t make me repeat myself again.” From behind Maan, Geet saw the man wearing glasses begin to approach.

“I . . . I heard a bang, which I thought was thunder at first. And then I turned around and I saw -- I saw . . . .” The scent of blood was wafting rapidly toward Geet, and she fought the urge to double over.

The man in spectacles touched Maan’s shoulder. “Maan Sir.” His voice was surprisingly gentle, his glasses fogging up from the rain. “This girl is obviously scared out of her wits.”

“I don’t care, Adi,” Maan said sharply. Thunder boomed again, causing Geet to jump. Maan didn’t so much as flinch as he kept his eyes on her. “Of all the alleys in town, she had to come into this one?” He let out a low curse.

It was odd being spoken about in third person, but Geet was grateful that Maan had stopped asking her questions. And grateful for “Adi,” who had a calming demeanor despite these unimaginable circumstances.

Over Maan’s shoulder, Geet could see the other men milling around the body, some with their arms crossed and others with their hands in their pockets. They were clearly waiting for their boss’s orders. Geet felt light-headed as she saw that the pool of blood under the man on the ground was growing wider. The rain was coming down more violently now, drumming against the stack of boxes that had led Geet to this alley in the first place. She could barely hear herself think.

Clearly fed up with waiting for her to speak, Maan stepped even closer to Geet so that they were merely inches apart. Another flash of lightning lit up the coarse walls of the alley, and Geet saw a glint of metal peeking around Maan’s waist. A gun.

Geet had never been this close to a weapon before, that too wielded by someone who was obviously angry at her. She bit back a gasp, her teeth catching on her tongue so that the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.

More blood in this ill-fated alley.

Geet could see that Maan’s lips were moving, but she couldn’t hear what he was saying. She felt as if she were floating on a far away cloud.

The last thing Geet remembered was slumping against the brick wall and seeing Maan’s jaw clench in irritation. His arms moved deftly toward Geet before she fainted, everything going black.

Uh-oh. Ran into a gangster, did she? Any which way she can escape?

I could feel her fear. I also liked how you've incorporated the weather into making it an eerie-er confrontation between the leads.

So it's like she's between the devil and sea. She would have been praying for a place but certainly not as a prisoner of a convict. (Assuming that he is a criminal and no innocent, considering the circumstances)

Edit - It just came to my mind that I am being negative. Maybe, they are officers! Adi addressed him as Sir. And maybe the one on the floor is a convict! Then I guess she's in safe hands. (Literally!)😂

Thank you for the quick update.

Maan and his assistant Adi. This makes me feel somewhat better assuming that they might not be cold blooded and hurt Geet in some way. Have a feeling Geet would probably be staying with Maan in the future ! Eager eager for the next

Nice update. Looks like Maan and his men have killed someone which is witnessed by Geet. The blood, menacing look by Maan and her not earing anything cause of her fainting.
