PART TWO:

“Haan didi, sab kuch plan ke hisaab se hai na?”

While Krishna was busy talking with Pallavi in hushed whispers, Raghav was having a hard time not being irritated.

“Pata nahi kisse baat kar raha hai yeh saree ka assistant.” He muttered angrily while pacing to and fro the Deshmukh Emporium. He was stuck in situation where only Krishna could help. Involuntarily, a small smile crept on his lips as he suddenly recalled that how Pallavi had literally pushed him out of their room so that he gift her something as he had lost the silly bet they had pulled off yesterday. Only if she knew, that he had lost everything to her, including his heart.

“Aur aisa ho sakta hai kya ki aap unhe thanks bolo aur woh accept na kare?... Accha nahi karti.. Arre didi suno toh...Phone kaat diya!” Krishna looked at her phone mildly shocked.

"O Saree ka assistant.. Tumhara baat hogaya ho toh mera madad karo.” He called out to Krishna, who was still standing in the corner.

"Coming Jiju!" She responded almost immediately .

“Bolo Jiju, kya madad chahiye aapko?”

“Arre abhi toh bola tha tumko.. Mereko woh.. Saree ka Dukaan ka.. favourite colour janna hai.” Raghav said hesitantly.

“Waah Jiju, Bhabhi ka favourite colour and all haan? Vaise kyu janna hai aapko yeh?” She smirked. Though Krishna knew the reason, she could not leave a chance teasing her only brother-in-law right?

“It is.. obvious that I want to.. buy a Saree for Pallavi.. Why would I come here then?" Raghav could feel the heat rushing up his cheeks.

Krishna sighed. Harish was right ; both Raghav and Pallavi could fight and bicker for days as if it was very usual. But when it came to doing normal things like gifting or giving surprises, they were complete amateurs. And both needed to be taught these “abnormal” things from scratch. She still smiled, thinking of how both were taking equal efforts in pleasing each other.

“Okay jiju. Lekin, Didi ne aapko apna favourite colour nahi bataya?” Krishna wondered.

“Arre nahi, bola tha mereko woh. She did say her favourite is pink but I know that it is not.” Raghav knew Pallavi was lying about it when he once mentioned that he likes to see her in pink and surprisingly ever since the same day, she claimed that it was her dearest too.

“Pink? Lekin jahan tak mai jaanti hun, unka favourite colour toh blue hai.”

“Blue..” He whispered to himself.

“Yes. Sky blue to be exact.”

He thought for awhile and continued. “But why is blue special, when there are a hundred others?”

She laughed. "Arre aisa isliye hai kyuki iss rang se unki bachpan ki yaadein judi hai. She herself once mentioned a few years back ki backpan mein unhe aasman dekhna bohot accha lagta tha. Gazing at the clear, blue sky and imagining faces with the occasional clouds was her favourite hobby.”

Krishna thought something for a while and continued , “Ek minute.”

“Jiju dekho,” She quickly pulled out a few sarees of the hue being discussed. “Kaun si wali acchi lag rahi hai aapko? Yeh vaali? Nahi, iska colour thoda dark hai... ya yeh vaali? ...Lekin yeh toh bohot heavy hai, didi ko pasand nahi aayega.”

While Krishna was busy debating with herself to choose the perfect one, Raghav's eyes fell on a vivid Saree, hidden beneath the piles of others. It was light, pastel blue satin Saree with shimmer adding to its charm. Neither too heavy, nor too gaudy. Just simple, and elegant. The dye was of exactly the same shade one would imagine a clear sky, with mild rays of sunshine peeking through the near transparent clouds.

He could envisage Pallavi as a lone sunflower, gently swaying with the paddy fields, dreamily gazing at the blue sky with fresh hopes. Though she couldn't receive the warmth of the rays she deserved, she made sure to amuse everyone around her with her vibe and dazzle.

But, who was he? Raghav frowned at his thought. Was he the cool soil, providing her solace and life? Or was he the meandering honeybee, spellbound by her radiance? That was when realization struck upon him.

No.

He was just a dull, murky cloud, in Pallavi's life, who had bestowed her with endless rain and sorrows. He snatched her sun, her glow, her happiness when she least expected it.

All these months, as much as he tried to convince himself that everything is fine since his Amma and Kirti are with him ; that he has been forgiven for his past mistakes ; that he has found his peace and solace, Pallavi ; he couldn't let go of the disgusting crimes he did. He was never free.

He recalled the memory that resurfaced in his mind. The memory of how he harshly accused her of having a physical relationship with him while also making the claim that she had done so for greed. She had been thrown out of her house, separated from her family because of him.

He remembered how he was numb for a few seconds when it was revealed that Pallavi was a widow.. No wonder why she was thrown out of her own home past midnight over the words of a stranger while Amruta was spared. He couldn't understand which was more shocking - the fact that she sacrificed everything for her in laws, considering them her family ; or the same in-laws never supported or treated her like one.

Then again, to still save that family, she gave up whatever pride she had left and married him for her brother's sake. And, as if that was not enough, she'd even tried to mend ties between his family and him while he could do nothing to decrease her pain. There was nothing he could do even after he got to know how wrong he had been. It was not like he didn't try correcting his mistakes. Her in-laws didn't even want to look at him. There was no chance they could accept his apology. And you say that you love her? His inner conscience mocked.

“Jiju?”

“Huh?” Raghav was on the edge of having a yet another panic attack when Krishna's voice snapped him out of his thoughts.

“Kitni baar bula rahi thi aapko, kahan khoye hue the aap?” Realizing something, Krishna continued -

“Oh. Ab mai samjhi! Aap didi ke khayalon mein kho gaye the na? She smirked.

Bottling up his emotions once again, Raghav just smiled faintly.

“Accha woh sab chorro, aur yeh batao ki aapko inmein se kaunsi pasand hai?” Krishna was heavily confused.

Raghav glanced at the satin saree for a few seconds. He then shook his head, as if brushing away his thoughts and pointed at it.

“This one.”

“Waah Jiju, apki pasand toh ekdam best hai! I am sure Didi will like this too.” She grinned.

“Thank you so much Krishna for helping me out, varna woh Saree ka Dukaan bohot taane maarta mereko.”

“Any time Jiju! Ab aapko jaana chahiye, didi aapka kabse wait kar rahi hongi!”

Waah Krishna. She mentally patted herself. Things were finally getting better between these two and ; the day is not far when they would realize their feelings for each other.

“Saree ka Dukaan, where are you?!” When he didn't find her anywhere even after pacing around the entire house, he concluded that she must be in the bedroom.

“Saree ka Dukaan?” He peeped inside their room , ready to bear her anger for taking longer time than expected. On finding the room in darkness, he turned on the switch, only to receive an incomprehensible shock.

Vases were broken, bedsheets were trampled ; the candles and rose petals were scattered all over the floor. It appeared as if a storm had struck the room.

“Pallavi!' He immediately rushed over to her, who was still sitting beside the bed, wearing no expressions on her face.

“Saree ka Dukaan, what happened?” he quickly kneeled over to her while looking in her eyes.

No response.

“Pallavi?” He held her hands and repeated himself slowly.

“Pallavi, tum thik toh hai na? Aur yeh, yeh sab” Raghav looked around the room and continued, “What happened?”

“Saree ka Dukaan, say something. Why is this room in such a state?” On receiving no response, he started becoming worried.

“Koi baat nahi. We can talk about this later. Ruko mai abhi Reddy ko bulata hai. Red-”

“Uski koi zarurat nahi hai.” Her voice was heavy, and by looking at her tear stricken face, anyone could sense that she had been crying for awhile.

She suddenly stood up, making him do the same.

“Sorry..Tumhara room ganda karne ke liye sorry. Mai yeh sab baad mein saaf kardungi.” She was about to leave the room when Raghav caught her hand, stopping her steps.

“Pallavi. Firstly, this is our room. I don't give a damn even if you break a hundred more objects like these. What matters to me are your tears. Were you crying? Kya hua? Did anyone tell you something?”

“Kuch aisa hi samajh lo Raghav Rao. Aai ki-” She had thought of the perfect lie and was about to narrate the same, but was interrupted by Raghav.

“Raghav Rao? Tum aise kyu baat kar raha hai?” He asked, clearly puzzled by her reaction. This was the first time she had called him by his full name after their marriage and, it hurt.

Pallavi chose to ignore his words and continued, “Aai ki yaad aarahi thi toh socha ki unse mil lun. Lekin Baba ne mujhe dekh liya aur mujhe taane maarne lage."

It was not a complete lie though. She did want to meet her Aai and converse with her ; but after her Baba insulted Raghav, there was no way she would step into that house ever again.

“Oh.” He said dismally. Just when he was about to speak something, Pallavi continued,

“Why do you care though? I don't think it is necessary for us to speak to each other so casually,” She took a deep breath and added -

“Considering the fact that this marriage is just..” The ringtone of her phone halted her words. She muttered a quick 'excuse me' and left the room.

"Yes Aniket? Aree haan! I am coming in 10 minutes.”

Keerti was passing by when she heard Pallavi speak on the phone.

“Who is she talking to?” she wondered.

“Keerti, chalein?” Her reverie was broken by Farhad's voice.

It must be someone at the shop. Maybe I should not overthink much.

“Yes Farhad, let's go.” She shrugged off her thoughts and smiled at him.

Raghav looked at the candle, which was still flickering.

He picked up the match from the floor and lit it. “Just a deal, Saree ka Dukaan. ” he murmured with a lump in the throat, as if completing her sentence.
