CHAPTER 9
Shaurya and Anokhi continued their discussion for a while after which they got immersed in preparing the documents.
Soon, Shaan entered the meeting room. He was suprised to the two sitting quietly.
"Good morning Anokhi. Morning Shaurya." Shaan gave a coy smile and greeted both of them.
"Good morning sir!"
"Morning Dad!"
"Good to see you two not fighting." He tried to bite his smile back.
Shaurya rolled his eyes at his statement while Anokhi smiled sheepishly.
Shaan settled down and they started winding up with the last bits.
"What's the date today dad?" Shaurya asked nonchalantly after some time, and scratched his head while going through a document.
"August 11" Shaan replied back .
Shaurya's heart skipped a beat at that. His fingers, which were till now ruffling the pages of the file rapidly, fell quiet.
His veins in his head throbbed loudly and he felt pale suddenly.
He glanced at Anokhi.
She was already looking at him with brimmed eyes. She blinker her tears quickly and averted her gaze.
11 August 2017.
The garden in SIAC lit up, even if it was late in the night.
"I love you Miss Bhalla."
"I love you PS."
"I love you so much Anokhi."
"I love you more."
And their hug completed their whole beings.
They stood beside the water fountain, in each other's embrace.
Two longing souls embarked on a fateful journey that day.
"Shaurya. Shaurya!" Shaan said loudly, when he noticed Shaurya lost in his reverie.
"Noth..Nothing dad." His trance broke and he coughed.
He stole another glance of Anokhi before looking at his watch.
It was the time for the meeting.
The room got filled soon and the meeting began.
As always, the discussions went on and until time was up.
"Mr. Sabherwal, Ms. Bhalla; you both are doing a great job. You two are really putting your best to make this project a success. Commendable efforts." Mr. Malhotra remarked in the end.
"Thankyou sir!" The simultaneous replies came.
"Thanks to you two. And I'll be pleased to announce to the committee members, that I have hosted a small party tonight in SIAC, to celebrate the success of our venture." Mr. Malhotra further added.
Shaurya looked at Shaan.
"Yes, we shall be more than happy to spend some time with the committee members." Shaan replied courteously.
After a few exchange of smiles, the room got deserted, leaving the trio inside.
"Mr. Malhotra is organising a party and you knew about it dad? You didn't even bother to tell me?" Shaurya looked at Shaan in disbelief.
"Shaurya, he really wanted to organise it, and when he approached me, I couldn't deny him. You know how all this works, right." Shaan explained to him.
"Fine." Shaurya sighed.
Anokhi stood up from her seat.
"I'll depart sir." She said while assembling her bag.
"Alright Anokhi. See you at night." Shaan said to her.
"Is it necessary for me to be a part of it?" Anokhi asked slowly.
"Yes it is Ms. Bhalla. I believe you are a part of this program too." Shaurya added before Shaan could.
"Alright. See you." She moved towards the exit and left the premises.
~
"Ready Shaurya?" Shaan stepped inside Shaurya's room to find him applying his cologne.
Shaurya and Shaan left for SIAC. They reached their destination in no time and stepped out to greet the ensemble guests.
Shaan noticed Shaurya glancing at the entrance at regular intervals.
"Waiting for someone, Shaurya?" Shaan asked him, pretending to be oblivious to the obvious fact.
"Huh..No dad!" Shaurya fumbled, making Shaan laugh out loud.
"Anokhi shall come Shaurya. Be patient." Shaan decided to tease him further.
"DAD!" Shaurya whined again.
"Alright, alright. I'm going to meet few other guests. Take care here." Shaan left him and went ahead.
Shaurya's eyes went back to the entrance again, only to find Anokhi making her way inside.
And like always, she took his breath away.
She was adorning a black sequin saree, her tresses flowed down, slightly curving below her waist. Her face had neutral makeup, while eyeliner was enhancing her almond shaped eyes. A silver bindi on her forehead completed her look.
She fidgeted her fingers nervously until her eyes met Shaurya's.
And he was gazing, well, ogling at her.
She knew how irresistible he was.
She gulped as she moved towards him.
"Good evening." She said loudly, breaking his trance.
"Uh-Ya-Good evening. Good evening Ms. Bhalla." He replied hesitantly.
"Shall we meet the guests?"
"Yeah, let's go."
They moved around the place, having short conversations with everyone.
Mr. Malhotra was having champagne with Shaan when he the duo gained his attention.
"Shaurya, Ms. Bhalla!" He waved at them.
"Hello sir." They wished him.
"Hey! You guys look so good." He began.
"Twinning, that's what they call it, right?" He remarked, glancing at their matching outfits.
"Coincidence." Anokhi muttered.
But Mr. Malhotra has just started.
"Why don't you guys shake a leg? The stage is literally empty." He asked them the unexpected, making Shaurya and Anokhi gasp.
"We would love to see you guys groove." A few more collegeous joined him.
Anokhi stared at Shaurya, while he himself didn't what to do at that moment.
"What the hell!" They thought to themselves.
"Come on guys. If they are insisting, then you may do a little dance." Shaan added while Shaurya shot his eyes at him for making the situation more uncomfortable.
"Let's go. Otherwise they will not leave us." Anokhi mumbled to Shaurya.
"You're right." Shaurya nodded and slowly stepped towards the centre of the stage.
He extended his hand towards Anokhi.
She placed her hands in his.
He pulled her closer swiftly.
Their hands joined.
His one room want down to cage her waist while her hands landed on his shoulder.
The spotlight fell down on the couple.
And, the song began.
Tere qareeb aa raha hoon,
Khud se main door jaa raha hoon.
Yeh bewajah toh nahi hai
Tu jo mila.
He rolled her around and they began swaying their bodies in sync.
Dheere dheere se tera hua,
Haule haule se tera hua.
Rafta rafta tera hua,
Tere bin main hoon be-nishaan.
He lifted her up in his arms, while her hand instinctively encircled around his neck.
Samjho zara, samjho ishaara,
Tera hoon main saara ka saara.
Jaise mujhe tumse hua hai,
Yeh pyar naa hoga dobara.
He placed her down again. His hands were caging her bare waist.
Dil mein teri jo jagah hai,
Uski koi toh wajah hai.
Yeh bewajah toh nahi hai,
Tu jo mila.
He could feel her quiver under his touch. He himself was out of breath, her touch making him insane.
Dheere dheere se tera hua,
Haule haule se tera hua.
Rafta rafta tera hua,
Tere bin main hoon be-nishaan.
With a final roll, she fell in his arms, as they gazed at each other intently.
The spectators clapped their hands loudly in applause, making them stand apart.
She could feel her face going beet red. He adjusted his tie.
"Whoa, that was something." Mr. Malhotra remarked with a wide smile on his face.
"God. I want to kill this guy." Shaurya thought to himself in frustration.
After few shot and awkward conversations, Anokhi was successful to excuse herself and went towards the restroom.
Shaurya too went his way, towards his car. He sighed deeply as he sat inside the stationary vehicle parked in the deserted area.
They hadn't been feeling since morning.
Today was the day when they confessed their feelings to each other, four years back.
They never thought their fate would turn into this, at that time.
When it was the time for the party to conclude, Shaurya rushed back, and excused his absence saying he had some urgent work.
The party ended and soon everyone left, thanking Mr. Malhotra and the Sabherwals for the enjoyable occassion.
"Shall we leave Shaurya?" Shaan asked to him.
"I'll come after some time. Have some important work." Shaurya told him and rushed out.
Shaan noticed something odd but shrugged it, leaving for Sabherwal House.
Shaurya took off his blazer in his hand and loosened his tie. He started walking towards the garden, as the cold wind hit him directly on his face.
He breathed deeply as thoughts ran inside his head.
He knew he had been in a similar situation before.
On one of the most dreadful nights of his life, Shaurya walked on the desolated road. He had lost everything that day.
~
Shaurya kneeled down in front of Aastha, as she took her hands in his and sighed a deap breath, before disclosing every single thing to his son, who was living in dark since 25 years of his life.
"I was around twenty four years old, when I got hitched to Shaan, and entered the Sabherwal House.
I had hopes in my eyes, and excitement tingled in my body, as I prepared myself to embark on this new journey of my life.
Me and Shaan had a very loving relationship. He supported me in whatever I did. He loved my fierce attitude, he probably had fell for that only.
Until.
Until one day, I received a call from my parents, that turned my world upside down. My brother died in an accident. Yes. The only support of my old parents left this world at a very young age.
We were absolutely devastated and shaken, to say the least. But more than that, my parents had no idea how to thrive on their own.
So.
I stepped forward, and decided to work. I thought I would transfer whatever I would earn to them, for their living. Shaan accepted this proposal, before we put it in front of your Bade Papa and Badi Ma.
They knew how miserable my parent's and my condition was. But the only answer that came back, when I put the request in front of them was "No".
A clear-cut "No."
I boiled with exasperation that day. Who were they to tell me if I could work on not, especially when it was utmost mandatory for me.
I looked at Shaan. He had his head lowered. I looked at you.
I picked you up in my arms, and marched towards the exit of that house, only to be stopped again.
"He is a Sabherwal. He won't go with you." These were the words that I heard.
My exasperation seemed to double and my helplessness increased. They snatched you away from me.
The only thing Shaan told me was that he shall raise you, and I needed to be with my old parents at that moment.
So I stepped out of that house, only to never enter again.
I know nothing will justify the blunder me and Shaan had committed, by leaving you in Bhaisahab and Bhaabi's hands.
I don't want you to forgive me, but just understand my situation too."
And when she ended, they both were in a pool of tears. Shaurya hugged her tightly.
"I'll not let you go now, atleast." She mumbled while hugging him back.
~
"Dad!" Shaurya barged inside Shaan's room, to find him drinking whiskey and playing some old videos featuring his mom and himself, on the television screen.
"Yes, Shaurya?"
"Till when dad? Till when?"
"What do you mean?"
"Till when will you keep watching these videos. Why don't you do something other than regretting?"
"What else can I do.."
"Take your stand. It's time to do something dad. Let's move out of this house. You, Mom, Anokhi & Me, we all shall live happily together, some place else."
Shaurya expected Shaan to immediately accept the plan. Afterall, this has to be the thing he had waited his whole life for.
But Shaan had something else in his head.
"Shaurya, if you will leave this house, you will loose the position you have gained in SIAC. I know you had gained it through your own hardwork and determination, but once you'll take the decision to step outta here, Bhaisahab and Bhabhi will disown you as the next heir of this family."
"So what Dad? I do not care. All I care about is, living a life which none of us had lived thill now. A happy life, with my real family."
"This is not how it works Shaurya. I want you to stay here, and carry forward the legacy of the Sabherwals.
Because you've earned this position.
When Aastha left, I became a pathetic loser. I never wanted you to become like me.
And you did not. You proved me wrong.
You became something that I will always be proud of.
And after years of struggle, I do not want you to let go of you hardwork, just like I did.
Claim your rights Shaurya. Don't let Bhaisahab and Bhabhi win this time too. Stay here.
I always wanted you to reconcile wih Aastha, which you did. I love Anokhi for entering our life, and changing your perceptions. But that doesn't mean you will leave Shaurya. Otherwise you'll loose."
"I get your point dad."
Shaurya stepped out of Shaan's room, but not before grabbing his whiskey away, and putting him down to sleep.
Unknown to Shaan, Shaurya had already got to know the truth about what had happened in the past.
Now, he could neither bring Anokhi in here, nor could leave.
He had lost his everything.
—————————
Shaurya walked inside the garden that had given the memories of a lifetime to him. He got seated on the bench, lost in reminiscence.
"Four years back. This is where you told me that you love me Anokhi. I can never forget that day. The most special day in my entire life." He began talking to himself.
"I can still picture us here. Standing by the water fountain, in each other's embrace. That day, I felt complete. I had found my home."
He shook his head as tears rolled down his cheeks.
"I lost you, my love." He muffled as his palms covered his face. "Anokhi, I hope you forgive me some day. I wasted our lives." He sobbed louder.
"I wish I could tell you, that I wanted to get married to you as much as you wanted, or probably more.
I wish I could tell you Anokhi, that I couldn't leave the people, who raised me for twenty five years of my life, even if I wanted to.
I wish I could tell you Anokhi, that I didn't want your life to be tarnished, after entering my house.
I wish I could tell you Anokhi, that I love you.
I still do, as much as I did before. I do not deserve you Anokhi. But, I love you. I really do."
"I love you too Shaurya."
Saying Shaurya was left stunned at the voice that replied back to him, would be an understatement.
He could feel goosebumps creeping up his arms. He couldn't believe what he had just listened to.
"Am I hallucinating?" He asked to himself while rubbing his face, still sitting on the bench.
"No, you idiot." The voice came again.
He stood up at once at that. He turned back and glanced at the entrance of the garden, only to find a sobbing Anokhi looking at him.
Her eyeliner was smudged, and tears had rubbed off her makeup. But God! How beautiful she looked.
"Anokhi..." Shaurya couldn't frame his sentence.
He flung his arms open, not having an idea of what he was doing. It was all just happening at that moment.
It didn't take a second for Anokhi to catch that indication.
She ran with all her might.
She ran, until she wasn't much far away from him.
She ran badly, and fell into his arms.
Her arms encircled around his neck, as he jumped onto his torso.
He wounded his arms around her waist and engulfed her into a bone - crushing hug.
She was sobbing loudly in his arms, while his own tears were running mercilessly down his eyes.
"I love you PS."
"I love you Shaurya."
"I love you Ms. Bhalla."
"I love you Anokhi. I love you so much."
Their hug competed their whole beings.
"I missed you so much Anokhi." He tried to tighten his hold more on her, if that was possible.
"I missed you too Shaurya. A lot." She cried back.
They stood beside the water fountain, in each other's embrace.
